With 2/3 of the goal for the year already shipped, it wouldn't be a surprise. UPDATED WITH NINTENDO COMMENT

Multiple sources have confirmed to Eurogamer that the Wii U may end production as soon as Friday.

According to the report, the final deadline for orders was the close of business yesterday (October 31) and with only a few small orders placed, the final Wii U system would roll off the line on November 4.

Nintendo had projected shipping 800,000 Wii U this fiscal year, and had shipped 540,000 as of the end of September. Overall, the Wii U has sold 13.36m units since its launch in 2012.

UPDATE 11/2/16: A Nintendo spokesperson denied the report in a statement to Japanese news source IT Media (translated by Kotaku): "There is no change to our continuing Wii U production." The statement acknowledged also that there are still Wii U titles in development, notably The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

For collectors, is that number low enough for Wii U to become a hot commodity on ebay in the next few years? Seems to me like Dreamcast never turned into a major collectible but Dreamcast was highly overrated.

Let's move on. I don't think people will ever be interested in it even after its death, especially since considering Nintendo is porting anything that was remotely succesful on the Wii U to other platforms.

Lets wait until the big Switch event in January before saying this.  Plus it's pretty doubtful the more niche games like The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade X, and Tokyo Mirage Session get port which will make their value pretty big in the future.  Anyone that wants to be a collector should buy the Wii U's lessor know titles during the next year because by the end of 2017 these games are going to skyrocket in price.

Some of the titles already are skyrocketing. Grab the niche titles now while they are discounted heavily, because a lot of the physical copies will become hot commodity items in the next year.

As an investment, I'd suggest that Wii U systems/games probably aren't a great buy.


But I agree with what others are saying: if you see a game you want to play at a good price, don't hold back. There will probably be a period where pricing really bottoms out in a year or so, but by then many of the less common/popular games will already be hard to find and rising in price.  If you want a collection, start shopping sales now and keep an eye on stock levels.




Personally, I'd really like to pick up an extra console. I have concerns about how long my Wii U will last, and fixing/replacing the gamepad will probably be a pain if it ever conks out.

The prices have already bottomed out on a lot of the games. Even Nintendo efforts, which historically have been immune to price drops, are falling to all time lows. I would say that the "sweet spot" for prices is now until next Summer.

I would have guessed that Nintendo had so much unsold stock, they would have already ceased production.

The Wii U must be flying off the shelves if Nintendo is still making them. The Wii U is saved.

Farewell to the Wii U. You had a short life, but you gave me countless hours of enjoyment with your lineup of games that greatly appealed to me. Some of Nintendo's all-time best were developed during this time.

I assume a small number of Wii U's will remain in production until the release and promotion of Breath of the Man vs. Wild. Although I can't see it helping much because I would assume the Wii U will not get a price cut low enough to make it an alternative to the Switch. The Wii U version will be for collectors, Shaymin, and people who don't make the Switch...
