Title: DS Games To Be Downloadable On 3DS Through My Nintendo
Post by: Shaymin on March 16, 2016, 05:15:31 PM

Prepare to clean another fridge.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/42301/ds-games-to-be-downloadable-on-3ds-through-my-nintendo

Radio Free Nintendo has predicted it for a few years, and now it's finally come to pass through My Nintendo: DS games will be available to download on 3DS.

The first applicable title is WarioWare Touched, which is in the initial batch of My Nintendo rewards at a cost of 1000 Platinum points. The DS WarioWare launched in North America in 2005, and was one of the first DS titles to be downloadable on Wii U.

The games will run as DSiWare, meaning they are stored on the 3DS's internal memory as opposed to the microSD card, and will have to be managed separately - WarioWare Touched is 214 blocks. The only previous downloadable DS title was a Japan-only release of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin as a Club Nintendo annual reward.

I'm so glad this is finally happening. I mean, it's too bad the implementation isn't more graceful, but doing that would probably require an intimate knowledge of the system architecture and access to the firmware that we just can't expect Nintendo to possibly

How big is internal memory? Most of the DS games were several hundred MBs.

... be bothered with doing the needed grunt work.

Limitations of the system or the company's commitments aside, neat that this is happening.

The 3Ds's internal memory is the same as the DSi's, which is to say miniscule. This is stupid.

This should have happened years ago

Pretty much. I suspect WarioWare Touched is about the upper limit of game size we can expect. (So expect Brain Ages and such)

Ugh.  Great idea, less than ideal implementation.  Why am I not surprised?

It's a pretty lousy way to implement this, but it may be our only chance at getting an Advance Wars game on 3DS given how much Intelligent Systems seems to be focusing on Fire Emblem.

Other than buying physical copies of Advance Wars: Dual Strike or Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, which both work perfectly on 3DS?  (I'm not really sure what you mean here. I was able to get copies of both last year for a pittance - maybe that was quite lucky though?)

True, I should have specified as a download. I've gone digital-only and would prefer not to have to deal with physical media.

I was already disheartened by the fact that you can't just go out and buy them, you have to first buy other games to get coins/points then you have to use those coins/points to get these. Now we learn the DSi crap.
Is there any chance that the New 3DS has more of this internal storage?
I can't believe they didn't come up with a way to get these games on the SD card even if it was just for the "New" 3DS like they did with SNES games.

Sounds restrictive enough that I'll never use it.  Might as well seek out the physical copies.

Does Nintendo ever think ahead?  If you were designing a DS successor that is backwards compatible with DS games and allows for any game to be purchased as a digital release wouldn't you immediately think "hey we could sell DS games through the eShop as well!  Let's make sure to allow for that."  I'm not being some genius with incredible foresight in thinking that - it is fucking obvious.  Yet when Nintendo messes something up it is pretty much always incredibly obvious.  Very rarely does something not work out well for Nintendo were I find I'm thinking "well that was really unlucky.  No one would think of that."  No it's always something that is being called out as a stupid idea the second it's revealed.

And I find it very odd that they're introducing this now when the expectation is that the 3DS is going to be replaced soon.  Why bother even having a new reward program this close to the end?

I still have a copy of this game, but it's nice to see they're going to offer DS downloads as rewards and there may be something later on I'd want.

Can you back up save files onto a 3DS SD card? I don't even know if you can do that with DSiWare, so I don't know why I'm asking.

When you copy a DSiWare game to the SD card it also copies the save data.

But that renders the game unplayable because it's not on the internal memory, right? Either way, at least you can put them into your catalog.

Right. It's too bad they never implemented the Wii SD storage solution on DSi and 3DS. It wouldn't fix this entirely, but it'd help a lot.
