I will miss Kyle Bosman and Ian Hinck and the rest.  :-\

Come back to NWR, Bloodworth!

Now wait a second I thought the internet was supposed to be the future and print media was supposed to be dying. In all seriousness this is kind of sad. But to be fair I haven't been to that website in forever.

I haven't felt this depressed about the state of the gaming media since 1up shut down. Gametrailers was my favorite site on the internet, particularly for their video reviews & Kyle Bosman. The people there had such a passion about what they did that I'd even watch their original features for games I had no interest in. Hell, the excited chatter they had on the most recent GT Time about Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth convinced me to check the game out. I had no interest in the game before, and now I'm really enjoying it. That's certainly not the only time that's happened, either.

I'd like to say that this news is unexpected, but honestly the site's been continually gutted by Defy since they acquired them, with frequent layoffs & budget cuts. Add in the really shitty, completely nonfunctional video player Defy forced on them at the beginning of the year, and it's not surprising this happened.

I'm sure all the big names (Brandon Jones, Kyle Bosman, Daniel Bloodworth, etc.) will find gainful employment elsewhere at the likes of Giantbomb, USGamer, etc., but it really does feel like we're in the darkest timeline now when click-bait, bottom-feeding scum like Kotaku & Polygon are now the leading voices in games media. Hell, we've had so much drop-off now that NWR is close to being a leading voice. It's just so depressing, even if we still have Giantbomb.

I haven't been to any major game news site in ages besides here and maybe two other sites. Most of my news comes Reddit subs and forums these days.

I think it could be a good thing. The "sellout" nature of game journalism seems to be passing. By that I mean the age where a publisher could "buy" a good review. I am hoping some quality niche sites can rise to the forefront.

You know, I was never really a Game Trailers person. I looked at their coverage several times over the year but I can't really say I've ever listened to their media analysis. However, I know how prolific the site is and it's certainly sad to see them go.

I am sure their top staff will find success elsewhere, however.

What an awful shame, and so sudden too.

I'm the same as you. It reminds of me of when The Dissolve shut down last year. That was a movie site but another place with excellent content that didn't go the click-bait route. It's a shame when good sites can't get the funds needed to stay operating.

I didn't use GameTrailers regularly, but did enjoy some of the content they put out and would occasionally binge watch a bunch of their videos. I guess it's hard to compete with that crazy morass called YouTube.

Best of luck to those from the site as they transition to new opportunities!

I think the media market as a whole has become too fragmented to be profitable. I work for a small weekly newspaper and we make more profit, at least percentage, than our daily competitor. Now that doesn't mean we make more money than they do but at the end of the day we keep more of the money we make than they do. We aren't entirely autonomous though, we own two other weekly papers and a bi-monthly magazine. Personally I think the media business worked better before when we had fewer, more centralized players than when everything fragmented into smaller segments catering to niche markets.

I kind of see this site, NWR, as equal to the small weekly that serves a smaller area but also has lower costs and targets their market effectively thus remaining profitable and sites like IGN, GT, etc, are more like the big dailies that are all consolidating and cutting corners just to stay alive. Maybe IGN is a metro and GT was the daily I don't know the analogy is starting to fall a part but I think that smaller niche websites work better when they focus on being good at one or two things instead of trying to be too much.

I completely forgot about 1up, so I didn't even know they went out of business.

$26,000 a month already. Muy beuno.

Just imagine if NWR's video reviews were like 4% as good as what the GT crew were putting out back in the day.  ;)

That's nice! Are they going to do more than "only" Face/Tweeter/YouTube, like recreating old site, forums and whatnot!?

PS old forums are still alive!?! - http://www.gametrailers.com/forums/
