Both North America and Europe will be able to return to Ivalice tomorrow by way of Virtual Console.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - the first game published by SquareEnix in over seven years on Nintendo systems on its initial release - will be in tomorrow's eShop update. Priced at $7.99/€7.99/£7.19, FFTA will be the first appearance by SquareEnix outside of Japan.

I've never played any of the Final Fantasy Tactics, But I've always wanted to try them. Are they more like Advance Ward or Fire Emblem? I ask because I already have my fill of Fire Emblem with 3 games coming next month, but if they're more like Advance Wars then maybe I'll try this.

Haven't played Advance Wars so idk, but it isn't like Fire Emblem. There is a pretty big difference.

Fred, you will probably enjoy FFTA, but know that it is one of my most hated games of all time and I feel is a total disgrace to the PSX original.

Final fantasy Tactics' brand of SRPG is actually far, FAR less like something like say... Fire Emblem or Shining Force and is much more an RPG with a grid-based movement system. more often than not, the way you manage your clan and equip them will determine the outcome of a battle than any actual tactical acumen you execute on the battlefield.

more accurate paralells would be say... Final Fantasy 5 or Bravely Default.

only those games I just listed don't insult my intelligence by providing me one of the most unlikable video game protagonists of all time, nor do they arbitrarily gate my progress and character progression or **** all over my battle tactics on a random day of the week. or have sountracks that annoy me. or have a fairly big side-quest to getting 100% in the game that's tied to using game-link cables to play with friends.


Yeah, that's right. you can't even unlock the final character or get all the weapons/quest items because I'm pretty confident they aren't adding Wii U Wireless LAN support so you can get the Eldagusto or whatever the hell the other item is, nor can you get some of the best armor equips in the game that are tied to that stuff.



Also, protip; if you don't want to deal with the game's bullshit in how it gates your progression, in the beginning release all your party members besides Marche, Montblanc, and one of the random jobbers they put on your team. this will open up a repeatable quest that lets you recruit clan members until you're at the clan minimum. repeat this quest, releasing everyone you recruit until you get your clan negotiation level to 30 and get the dagger. this dagger teaches steal:ability, which you can then use to steal the "Steal:weapon" ability from the first Clan Borzoi boss, which then lets you steal all the bullshit gear the game gives itself far before you could obtain it.

Thanks, I actually really appreciate your response. Those details have made it obvious to me that I don't want this game. Not only because of the downsides you mentioned, but also because I hated Bravely Default. I was really hoping that it was very similar to Advance Wars, but where it's not I'll just continue hoping that Intelligent Systems is currently working on an Advance Wars game.

Mario RPG's a Nintendo published game, and it took at least a year from it coming out on Wii before Square started publishing stuff there.

Isn't this currently available through the Wii Shop Channel (which means any Wii U owner can already play and enjoy the game)?

Woah, JP! way to throw the iOS version unde rthe bus, which works quite fine. the only reason the Steam version is bad is because they blew up the iOS version and they didn't do anything to fix the resolution so the game kinda likes slipshod and has a 30 FPS cap.

the GBA sound and lag on animations bugs me in the Tose ports of those games anyhow. As someone who has a Super Famicom copy of Final Fantasy V sitting in their (Knife'd) SNES right now, I can still to this day somewhat reccomend the fan translated route! Honestly, outside of maybe Gilgamesh's silly and over the top dialogue, I don't think it's a game that it's narrative makes it strong.

Rather, the incredible use of the job system that has only been properly iterated upon by the original Final Fantasy Tactics and maybe Bravely Default...?

The second half of the game is pretty poorly set up, but even with that I still enjoyed the game because of the job system. If you can find a deal on the game, I think it's worth it, but not worth full asking price.

I actually did buy it when it came out, because I'd liked the demo. The reactions just scared me away from ever sinking any real time into it. Maybe I'll go back to it.

I would love a new Ogre Battle with pointer controls. I need to fire up Ogre Battle 64 again some time soon. Never did finish that game.

What I'll never understand is if Nintendo has built this "great" partnership with SquareEnix over the years, why they don't release the original Tactics, or any of the PS1 FF games, or seriously ANYTHING SE has made in the last 20 years (Vagrant Story anyone?!) on Sony machines and release them on the WiiU VC.  Do they have some kind of retarded exclusive deal with Sony?  If Rare can publish former-Nintendo games on MS's XB1, then Sony can certainly give up the ghost and let SE put their own goddamn games on another system.

I believe Sony actually owned a few million shares from Square Enix for most of the past decade so there's that.

Square had to create a shell company to start developing on the GameCube and GBA because of deals they had in place with Sony, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's not an option for them to port that stuff over.

Plus I don't think the Playstation has it's own section in their Virtual Console and if it does, Nintendo stopped releasing games for it on a regular basis years ago like they did everything else.

if you really don't want a PS3, Square-Enix has been focusing some porting efforts to Steam in recent years. not the greatest since I lot of the ports are based either on iOS code or the code of FF7 and FF8's original PC releases, but I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy 9 is coming to Steam, and that game was truly PSX exclusive, so... there's that.


... I kinda want me some Brave Fencer Musashi. that game was rad as ****.

Nintendo only allows unaltered, original format versions of games on the VC. Square-Enix couldn't just put out their PS1 games on the VC, assuming Nintendo even had an emulator for them. Plus, why bother when Square-Enix has the PS1 classics sections on PS3/PSP/Vita?

Yeah, these publishing deals can be a confusing mess. I think Dragon Quest VII and VIII on 3DS may be the first time that a former Square-Enix Sony exclusive released on a Nintendo system... and those games are from the Enix side, not the Square side.
