I doubt that there will be another Super Smash Bros game for the GCN. SSBM is still selling fine, and there really isnt too much they could add to make it worth while. There will definately be another game for the Gamecubes successor.

Personally I think they could make a sequel that is just a huge platforming game, like adventure mode was. Adventure mode was sweat but there were really only two major platforming levels, mushroom kingdom and the zelda thing, and even those were short. I'd like to see a game like that anyway.

IGN's article was just what they'd like to see in the next one, I believe- there's been no confirmation of another game although Nintendo would be *crazy* not to make a sequel to what is currently the best selling title on the Gamecube. I'm sure HAL's working on it even now.

Quote I'm sure HAL's working on it even now.
No doubt there, but I would be very surprised to see it for this system. Like I said SSBM is still selling fine, and SSBM2 would be a great launch title for GCN2.

Exactly, all they need to do is make it a launch game instead of one month behind schedule, leaving Luigi's Mansion to attract buyers.

Which begs the question... if Smash Bros had been a launch title instead of Luigi's Mansion, would the Cube's launch have gone much MUCH differently?

One Smash Bros per Nintendo console would be the smartest decision. I wonder who will make it into the next game? . . . sigh.

i can think of a few things that could be added to the next smash bros. and you will find them in the other topic about it

I think the next logical step in the evolution of the franchise is online play.
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: DRJ on July 16, 2003, 04:59:45 PM
online play will not happen, but lan play (which is basically online play, only free) is a definate possibility. Imagine a 8-16 player madhouse free for all fight. That would be so cool.
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: Gup on July 16, 2003, 05:04:33 PM
LAN play is meant for split-screen multiplayer, so that won't happen.

If the Gamecube successor has a built in modem...you should at least expect SSBM to be LAN...online is still a big if. But if Nintendo wants to be aggressive it willl be online.
But the only thing I'd like added to SSBM are two things:
1) Tons of more characters (like over 50, hehehe) - Let's leave Capcom vs. SNK in the dust 2) Longer Adventure Mode...with more diveristy.

man i think the coolest thing for the adventer mode would be to make and adventure for each character. Like the adventure for link would be completly different from the adventure for mario. Links would be something like in hyrule and then visit places from other games for different stages. Mario's adventure would be in the mushroom kingdom and it would be like playing the old mario games but in 3d. but each of the stages would end with you fighting another Smash Bro.
do you guys understand what im saying

Yeah, but I sort of like how all the characters mix and go into each other's worlds.
Adventure mode is LONG as it is. But I would like more diversity.
50+ characters is rather a lot, so I'll be happy if they include cel-shaded Link, FLUDD Mario, an updated Samus, Krystal (or Fox w/ staff), and a vacuum pack Luigi. Among other things.
A Pikmin character would be sweet, but I dunno what they'd do with it.

A group of pikmin chars to create an impersonating figure....Sort of like hand but the pimin would form a human-like figure
Any ways...I dont know where this topic is going...so I'll just wait for someone to reply...

A ssbm2 would be a great idea, as the char idea is. Heres my thoughts
Character no 50: Captain olimar
Aunch (like in PIKMIN) B: throw PIKMIN (like in PIKMIN) etc, etc all using stuff from PIKMIN
Character no 51: Mew
A: Phychic (like in pokemon) B: metronome (like clefairy does in melee) etc,etc all using stuff from pokemon
waddya think???

man i think there are enough pokemon in the game i dont really care for anymore. and if you ask me when people look to see the character list and see like 5 or 6 pokemon(there are currently 4 I believe) thy are gonna see the game as a kids game because that is how pokemon is viewed by mainstream consumers.

Here's an idea.
Smash Bros: Nintendo vs. Sega.
Hehe. Sorta like the whole Capcom vs. SNK thing... except not. Yeah.

you know who i would absolutly love to see in the next game? Ridley from the Metroid series, and then Meta-Ridley as an unlockable charater. i remember a bunch of people speculating that he was a secret character in the melee and i was excited but he wasn't there.
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: DRJ on July 18, 2003, 05:55:51 AM
Ridley would be cool, but they would have to make him weak so that other players could beat him. I mean do you really think the Pikachu would do anything to him (Well he might give him some indigestion).
The next game doesnt really have to change too much from the winning formula. More characters (less clones). Maybe just have one mario, and if you pic the white color for him he is Dr. Mario instead of having two seperate characters wasted on basically the same thing. Same with daisy and peach. Another character from the Zelda universe would be nice. Maybe a Goron.
I would also like to see something that rewarded you for playing other modes. Lets say if you are link you start out with his basic seapons, but you can buy upgrates by playing through adventure mode. Then when you play melee you input your name/password or whatever to unlock your special items that you have earned. They would have to be careful not to make the stuff be too powerful so the game becomes unbalanced, but I think it could be done.
I just want to say that SSBM is my favorite party/group game. And any sequel will kick ass. just make the sequel for the next system and I will be the first peron in line to buy it.

The following characters should/could be included in the next Super Smash Bros.

I don't care how many characters there are just as long as some aren't clones of eachother. its no point in having multiple characters that do the same thing. They should have more widely known characters as well, i.e. not characters like the ice-climbers

I hope they really change a lot of stuff around in the next installment so it is different than the ones out.............
Melee was changed enough to make me buy it, and I don't see any need in buying something that plays exactly the same if there are only a couple more stages and some new characters................................. unless Pit is playable.... then it's a definite buy.

hey man I love how it plays now and all they need to do is add a few new characters and ill buy it. this thread has got me playing it again and i only have 228 trophies so im trying to get more.

Well Mario, most of those aren't Nintendo characters. . . but okay But you forgot Meta Knight, from Kirby. Meta Knight rocks!
Ridley would be awesome. I thought it'd be cool if they made an evil villains SSB. People that might be in it?
Ridley Bowser Ganondorf Star Wolf General Scales (mebbe) Shadow Mario Baby Bowser Wart King Dedede Meta Knight That fat samurai dude from F-zero Some Fire Emblem baddie (dunno any) Mewtwo (isn't he evil or something?)

And the fat lizard guy from Donkey Kong. King K. Rool or something like that. I get the pun, but I'm not sure how to spell the name.

Umm Build your own charachter mode would be nice, don't you think?.....
Also like I said before, every character should be able to transform into different modes. For example, young link, by pressing the c-stick left/right/down(or on whatever other analog stick they include in the GC2 controller) young link transforms into a goron, deku, or zora ala majora's mask. Each come with there own specific traits and moves, for example deku would be fast but weak but he could float for long distances and shoot stuff, goron slow but powerful, zora average. Another example could be Mario (with all his hats or somthing). Now if you do that with every character, you would have a very nice strategy implemented. Not everyone will transform though, such a Samus. She won't transform but she can change her gun or something.
I think if HAL spent time on this and took a great deal of care, they could make SSM more than a legend in the gaming world. Also, LAN would be great but hard to implement. The levels would have to be aleast 2 times as big as Hyrule Temple and the camera would have to focus on your player alone some how for it to work.
Title: RE: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: Gamefreak on July 20, 2003, 01:55:32 PM
what? No, camera must show everyone....
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: DRJ on July 20, 2003, 02:56:13 PM
If the area was larger and the camera showed everyone at once, your character would be very small. The get pretty small now if everyone spreads out on the larger levels.

Post by: Nephilim on July 20, 2003, 03:27:24 PM
I would like to see: 30 people at the most.....if there are 50 icons, then it wont be balanced....Like marth and roy, they didnt fit in and were too strong maybe a lan link up, 8 players on screen thu 2 gc's... stats..Like a FPS, have stats for a name, so if you "buddy" then it will record your k.o, time ect. more events, they were fun esp. ones like dark link and marathon
Title: RE: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: Don'tHate742 on July 20, 2003, 03:32:46 PM
Exactly that's why a camera showing everyone wouldn't work well GameFreak. Even on the levels of SSMB, the charachters can get pretty small. Now imagine a 8 player match on a level 2 times as big.....it just wouldn't work. Some how they would have to make it a split screen/ once everyone is close enough 1 camera. To clarify, when people are spread out on the level, the camera would swich into to split screen then when people come closer together, the camera would merger into one. The thing I can't figure out is if there are two tv's for LAN play does the camera correspond with everyone or only the people playing on that particular cube.
Think about it.
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: Hostile Creation on July 20, 2003, 04:44:32 PM
An easy solution would be to not include LAN. And why would the level be twice as large? And why would it differ from two characters being on either side to there being eight characters spread around. I think the drawbacks would be minimal, and any problems that exist are just a small price to pay for LAN.
Sorry, but customizable characters is a horrible idea, don'thate. I like the transformation thing, though. The only problems are with characters like Fox, Peach, Ice Climbers, Pikachu. I don't think it'd work, but it's a cool concept.
Title: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: DRJ on July 20, 2003, 04:58:51 PM
I dont think it could work with 2 tvs either. Lets say these 4 are on 1 tv and another 4 on the other tv. Well lets say player 1 and 2 (both on tv1) go very far apart. The second tv wouldnt help. Now a LAN play where everyone has there own tv would be nice. The camera stays on you all the time and you can zoom in and out on your own. When you zoom in you will have blind spots, so you would have to be careful.

Post by: Hostile Creation on July 20, 2003, 05:12:55 PM
Actually, I like it when I'm really small. I'm Marth (no inherent projectiles), and I'm really precise, so it's not a problem. I just like to know where everybody and everything is. Only problem with being zoomed out is that motion sensor bombs are hard to notice.

Post by: Rich on July 20, 2003, 06:15:52 PM
actually, thats a real good idea DRJ. you could see as much or as little as you wanted but it would be a hassle when there are 4 people on each screen.
Title: RE: New Super Smash Bros.
Post by: Don'tHate742 on July 21, 2003, 10:31:00 AM
It would have to be twice as large to compensate for the 4 other players added (8 total). Do I have to explain everything.....
Everyone with there own tv's is a cool idea, but noone will ever do that. Umm I think after you beat the game (not completely, I still haven't with SSMB) you should unlock create mode or something. I think that would add so much to the game, especailly in the replay value.

The different form thing is an awesome idea. But on to the reason I'm posting. I think an awesome idea/name for the next Smash Bros. would be Super Smash Bros: 3rd Party. This game would include characters from...you guessed it, 3rd party developers. For the developer to get its character in the game, they'd have to put an exclusive game on the cube (or whatever system this is on) starring this character. There are probably flaws to this idea of mine, but the way I see it, Nintendo gets more exclusive 3rd party games and 3rd party developers get a free plug for their game. Everybody's happy. And maybe, we'd find out if Sonic can hang with Mario

Unfortunately Nintendo would have to pay for each other license they wanted. If they included Sonic they would have to pay Sega for the rights etc.

"Unfortunately Nintendo would have to pay for each other license they wanted. If they included Sonic they would have to pay Sega for the rights etc."
Not necessarily. Nintendo could get third-parties to agree with it using other tactics. Nintendo could have made Namco agree to allow Pacman to appear in a Smash Bros title before they allowed it to make Starfox 2. It could have similar deals with Sega for Sonic in exchange for FZero AC/GC and Capcom for Megaman in exchange for Zelda Four Swords. I doubt third-parties would be that reluctant over the idea. Having them appear in Smash Bros would be a great way to revitalize the popularity of their mascots. It would probably be as good for the third-parties as it would be for Nintendo.
Honestly, I think there's a real chance all this will really happen. There's been talk of non-Nintendo mascots appearing in a Smash Bros title since before Melee was even released. Nintendo has no doubt heard all of it. Doesn't anyone else find it strange that Nintendo has yet to announce a game of its own for the Triforce (which was developed by Nintendo along with Sega and Namco). You have to admit a Smash Bros game with Namco and Sega mascots would be PERFECT for it.
BTW, let's not forget that Nintendo has ALREADY made a Pacman game of its own and Miyamoto himself implied it was possible Sonic might be in Mario Kart. So, yeah, if Nintendo wanted a "Smash Bros Third Party" or whatever it would be called, I definitly think it could happen.

Are you drunk, The moon from Majora's Mask in the next SSB? That's...uh...well...you know. They would never put over 25 characters in that game. It's too many characters to balance and too many to work with. Besides SSBM had a lot of characters and for that exact reason, the balance in the game is screwed despite what people say.

For the next game, the clones should definitely be alternate costumes for their "parents." Then adding more characters won't fill up so much space on the screen.

I was always quite fond of the notion that maybe the next SSB could have a "build up special move" meter type thingy. It could be built up to level 1, 2, and 3 attacks. The third of which could be a characters, "end all be all move of moves" um, move. 1st and 2nd type attacks could be combo variations or even multipe specials thrown together. And the only way to build up this so called "Special Meter" would be to inflict damage with regular A button attacks or by taking damage yourself. I just think that something like this would bring a LOT of variation into the world of SSB. It's BADLY neeed. Oh, and more characters would be a plus, too.
