Title: *sadface* Whatever happened to good ole Splitscreen MP.
Post by: Ymeegod on October 13, 2015, 12:09:35 AM
Halo 5, Starwars Battlefront, Splatoon--

Man, miss the ole days when friends can stop by, pick up a controller and join my game.  Halo 5 has zero split screen and Battlefront and Splatoon have limited splitscreen support for one mode each.

:(

Splatoon has local 2-player, but I assume you're looking to have a turf war...

I once heard a store employee explain to a confused parent who couldn't seem to find a multiplayer game for his kids that local multi was mostly killed to force people to buy two copies of the game to play with two people.

yeah that's the only thing that piss's me off with Halo 5 is no spilt-screnn.
but the suspense is masterful!
What has happened to chief?
Is he Bad?
Is he Dead?
Is he Chuck Norris?
we don't know!
if the game is as good as the podcast Hunt the Truth where're in for a very good game.

I think the culture has started to move away from split-screen, local MP.  Inviting friends over to play a game is starting to become like inviting friends to go to an arcade.  I think without a "big" party game that draws people in, you won't see it be as important to most people.

Honestly, I wish the Wii U could support two gamepads and that Splatoon could let me take myself and a friend online because that would be the best way to show it off.  That's how I was introduced to Gears of War (which I bought a 360 to play more of, though not really online).

Mario Kart 8? Split screen for FPS games is awful though. Limits your vision too much, and typically causes a massive performance hit.

Yeah, I think the performance hit is probably the biggest reason you don't see it as much anymore.

We suddenly care about performance after decades of splitscreen gaming on NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 reasoning holds no water.

Black Ops 2 has great local multi in an FPS on the Wii U. It's just select series and developers that abandoned it. I wish that BWii had it as it was always hard to find people online to play with.

I'm always more supportive of local multi as I play with family and friends still.

Here is the unfortunate nature of the situation:

Those that grew up with split-screen multiplayer are now older and lead different lives than they did back then.  They have spouses and kids and jobs and having their friends all play together in the living room doesn't make sense like it did in high school or college.  Playing online has the flexibility that if you're okay playing with strangers there is always someone to play with which better fits a 35 year old's schedule.

Meanwhile the kids whose lives are currently in the same situation that was so favourable for split-screen multi when we were the same age have no nostalgic fondness for it.  It doesn't show up that much anymore and we may not like that but the kids today don't know better.  Split-screen was to some extent a fudge to work around a lack of online play.  That's not an issue today so most games stopped bothering.  The kids today never really knew it and have lived their whole lives in the internet age so they're not demanding it or are even familiar enough with it to know if they would want it.

Yeah, it's kind of ironic how better hardware has resulted in games having less features.

It's also ironic given how the average TV is gigantic and crystal clear now compared to the Goldeneye rec-room tube set salad days, and controllers are wireless by default. This should be the best time for local multiplayer.

I don't think it's just a generational thing with me, either. I played plenty of local multiplayer back in the day and greatly enjoyed it, and don't find online engaging at all, even with friends, despite plenty of people my age (30) being glued to online games. Rather than adapt I just stopped playing multiplayer altogether outside of local Smash Bros.

I bought Dragon's Crown for the PS3 expecting it to be a fun game to play co-op with my brother.  We've played it once.  I bought the latest BlazBlu with the idea again that I could play with my brother.  We've played it once.  It isn't that we dislike these games it's just that we don't live together anymore so the time to play together, like we did during the Gamecube days when we both still lived with our parents, isn't there.  I don't want to play with strangers so multiplayer is pretty much worthless to me now.  If no one pointed out that splitscreen isn't a thing anymore I probably wouldn't have noticed.  Any outrage I have over the concept disappearing is entirely in principle as I'm not personally impacted by it.  However in the future if I have kids and want to play with them the lack of a feature would be annoying.

Sure it does.  In those days, we didn't have (pardon the French) digital coqs we could measure against eachother.  Most FPS games have one ranking systems that people take a lot of stock in.  It makes sense that people (who aren't always in it purely for the fun) wouldn't want their performance impaired for any reason.

I meant "performance" as in CPU performance.

Developers managed to do splitscreen on machines that were literally hundreds times weaker than what we have now.

Thus them now saying that we can't do it because current consoles are too weak is just laughable.
