Title: Least Polished GCN Game
Post by: Plugabugz on July 09, 2003, 11:48:28 AM
The complete opposite to the 'Most' equivalent.
Poor and often slow camera. New engine equates to no improvement over a Playstation title. Unusually large load times. I thought Metroid Prime could be a little slow, when you opened doors sometimes. Crash Bandicoot often took a full 2 minutes. Makes you wonder what exactly it is loading? Unresponsive movement. Incredibly linear gameplay. You can complete this 100% in 2 days if you tried. I didn't in the end, becuase the poor camera and unresponsive controls means I got fed up and put it away.
My vote goes to Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex.

Metroid Prime, slow? Have you played Xbox/PS2 games? Their load times are ages compared to that. The only load time in MP is on the elevator, and I don't mind that at all.
Least polished? Darkened Skye, hands down. Crappiest game I was ever stupid enough to waste my money on.

Dark Summit. Hands down.
The loading times resembled those found in the first generation of PSone games, the graphics were MEGA glitchy, frame rate dropped for no reason at all, it'd sometimes freeze in the middle of loading, sound lagged, the music would sometimes cut out, you could go thru walls, falling in the pits of acid could send you into a strange blue background for up to 30 seconds..
I could go on for quite a while, you know.

Darkened Skye is almost definitely worse. It's a port from an old PC game (it's about using Skittles for magic, you know it has to suck), it has the graphics worthy of a bad 64 game, and the gameplay is nauseating. Only redeeming quality? Good voice acting and a script that is rather funny. I think I'd rather just read the script without playing the game.

I've never heard of Darkened Skye.
Must of never made it out of the US or something..

That could be. No one in their right mind would distribute it anywhere else. And quite frankly, they shouldn't have made it here.
But I got Zelda to calm my nerves

Hmmm, id say Wave Race or Mario Party 4. They are simply lacking in options and polish. What could have been some of the greatest games ever turned out just "pretty good" due to a lacklustre development time or sloppy programming.... or something. Bah. Rogue Leader also lacked polish gameplay wise IMO.
But as for the "worst" game, id give that award to Turok Evolution

As for slow loading times, I'd say 90% of the PS2 ports. But they generally lack polish anyway.

Hm... Hard to tell, I usually read reviews before buying anything and therefore have no really bad games for GC... But the voice acting in the German version of Mystic Heroes is about the worst I've ever heard.
Monkey: Darkened Skye is available here in Germany. So it's not US exclusive...

As for load times, The Simpsons Road Rage takes the cake

simpsons road rage is smelly i only got it cause it was so cheep and the voice acting makes me laugh. despite the fact it actually crashed when i was playing it today, i had to turn my cube off and on again, and then a bit after that the voices stopped for about a minute, strange! but given i haven't played alot of crap games for gamecube, i would probably award it to Gauntlet Dark Legacy, looks like a passable n64 game, and is pretty much a carbon copy of Gauntlet Legends on n64, some levels are exactly the same, there are just more levels now and 4 new characterrs.

I agree, some doors are a bit slow. This doesn't help when you want to run away from enemies and getting your back ripped into shreds, ouch

I think I will give the prize to Spy Hunter. Of all the GameCube games I played, Spy Hunter was by far the worst. The game should be shot into space and never returned.

In fact, I should also include Conflict: Desert Storm as my second vote.
After playing Metroid Prime and completing it, I'm slightly stuck to the button system. I liked the way how it was all so comfortable and had no overlay on it. Desert Storm however I'm trying to get used to it and I'm getting nowhere. I can't see where I'm going in the game, the radar is practically useless. The graphics are somewhat mediocre, but generally lacklustre. You can't see who's shooting at you! All you see is a slightly thickened yellow line head in your direction then after a second it disappears. The engine seems pointless. Someone was playing the game along with everyone else at the time, then he just 'fell' out. My friends like this game, but I find it so badly crafted it's a nightmare to play. The vocals are awful. The 'sand' in one of the levels was simply just a sand-like colour repeatedly hazing the screen every second. No detail now was put into this, because all the characters see the sand at the same time. Strange considering wind currents can change when you are in different places? Not like Metroid Prime where it hazes when you are standing in heat spots, then when you leave them it returns to normal view.
Simply awful.

This is an excellent example of one of many reasons why I object to the use of crack, pot, or anything else that screws with your mind. I mean, to suggest that something without fault or flaw is unpolished? Did this information come from the six-foot rainbow-colored lizard jazz musician standing beside him?
Metroid Prime doesn't even have load time, compared to other GCN games and most especially to anything on PS2 or Xbox. The longest you will ever have to wait for anything in Metroid Prime is nothing compared to the equivalent on other consoles. The second or two pause you get when going through a door sure beats a minute or two elsewhere, and elevators? Heck, imagine the same game loading on the alternative consoles and you might just as well go fix you something to eat in the kitchen and come back to check on the loading progress.

Legends Of Wrestling - a game so awful that I never even bothered to check out it's sequal. Then again, i 've never been able to understand how it spawned a sequal (and another one coming soon)!!!

If you want people to respect your opinions the least you should do is also respect theirs.
Have a nice day.

Rogue Leader is very polished, that's just foolish.
However, Mario Party 4 is VERY lame. It lacks any quality. It needs more boards, players, games, etc. It's so unimaginative and un-original that I think it very much deserves to be on this list. A complete lack of effort.

I agree. I'm glad that I received this game as a gift and didn't have to pay for it. But hey - my best friend's 6 year old son loves it!
Way to go Nintendo, HAHAHA

I consistently read reviews before I even rent games so I haven't really played any really bad games for the Cube. From what I've read Spy Hunter looks to be the king of bad ports though. The screenshots looked like a PSX game. It's like Midway made a special port program, ran Spy Hunter on it, and then released it as is.
As for games I've actually played I'll give the Least Polished award to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. It's actually a pretty decent port, it just is a fundamentally flawed game to begin with. The camera problems for the first SA are STILL in it which is really stupid and the treasure hunting levels are like something out of a bad Midway platformer. The radar is completely f*cking useless and the camera sucks. And the worst part is that you HAVE to complete them to continue and they can take like an hour to beat. Another thing that really bugged me and showed a lack of polish was that in the Chao Garden the same button was used to pick up your Chao and to pet his head. I would sometimes spend like ten minutes patting my stupid Chao's head when I was just trying to pick the f*cker up!

Put me down for the Sonic Adventure games as well. I know Sega has been going through a lot of woes, but it seems like Sonic Team is being ran by a bunch of n00bs when compared to other Sega developers. You don't see this kind of amatuerish quality coming from Smilebit or AV. I'm hoping for better things with Billy the Hatcher, but the pop up in the demo already has me worried. At least I didn't have to wrestle with the camera in same way as I did the Sonics.

least polished game in my collection would have to be resident evil.
now, i'm not saying the game isn't really well done, but there are many things that i find really frustrating about this game.
the fmv's are sometimes choppy, which is really disappointing because the game was completely redone for ngc, not just a port. hit detection also seems to be slightly off. and my biggest complaint would have to be i find it really hard to push objects. especially when in a hurry because a zombie is chewing at my ankles. (example: i found it overly-difficult to push the statue off the 2nd floor of the dining room.)
on a slightly different note, the game is probably the least polished in my collection because i tend to only play tier one games. i just don't have enough time to waste playing spy hunter.
