Title: Nintendo Power NEEDS Demo Discs!!! A Great way to promote GBA/GC connectivity!
Post by: AgentSeven on July 07, 2003, 10:51:13 AM
Here's something that should be addressed by every Nintendo website on the planet.
Nintendo power needs to have it's own demo discs!!! I can't say this enough!
The BEST way to promote GBA/GC connectivity is with monthly GC demo discs. Each disc could have new GBA demos and downloads. This would practically guarante an increase in GBA/GC connectivity. It may also do more to promote the concept of GBA/GC connectivity than almost anything else. (With the exception of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. That game will move a million GBA's and GC overnight!)
This is also a great way to give exposure to all those good third part titles.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the one major missing link in Nintendo's comeback strategy. Let's hope they get on the ball really soon.
If you wan't to help promote this idea, please feel free to drop Nintendo an e-mail at this address:
nintendo@noa.nintendo.com
Make sure you mention GBA/GC connectivity...

I couldn't care less about GCN/GBA connectivity - but a monthly, bi-monthly or even a quarterly demo disc would be incentive enough for me to purchase a subsription to Nintendo Power.

I agree. Tell me this wouldn't be a good thing for Nintendo to do. When I worshipped my PS1, OPM took care of me with a disk every month. I didn't subscribe, but then again, I couldn't really afford to. Now if Nintendo offered a disk like that, I'd subscribe in a heartbeat.

I think Nintendo expects us to play in-store demos. The kiosks or whatever set up in the stores (wal-mart in my area) get a new disk every 2 months or so.. they figure it is cheaper for us to just go to the store. I have about 10+ hours put on my preview disk because i dont really like playing at the mall. I go in, get what i need, and leave. I dont really have time to try the demo disk. Another reason is because the screen is on the shelf up high and you gotta break your neck to play AND the controllers have no joysticks on them anymore.. THEY SHOULD REPAIR THE damn paddle!

Complain to the stores. It sounds like you're blaming Nintendo, and that certainly isn't their responsibility (didn't say you actually are, but that's what it sounds like).

Nintendo is to blame for not releasing demo disks. Release them with nintendo power, or whatever. I'll sign up. What's the problem Nintendo, I will pay you $10 or whatever to let you advertize your games with me. I'll pay you. Now send me a demo disk.

I was referring to the broken controllers.
As for a demo disc, I could care less. I don't own the existing one, and I'd only get one if it had one of the few games I really wanted on it, and if that game was more than 2 or 3 months away. Unlikely. I certainly wouldn't subscribe to anything.

Amen. As someone who still hasn't gotten a GC preview disc, i have to say i'm extremely frustrated at how Nintendo's handled the situation. Even going back to Playstation, i think this is the first disc where i wanted to play just about every game on it. With their jump from carts to optical disc, it seemed like a logical progression to have . i'd really like to know what the reasoning behind this is, because it seems like a no-brainer.

I'm not even asking for 5 games on a disk. Give me two playable demos, 2 movies for some future releases that are not ready yet to be playable, Some commercials (I wouldnt mind having the tv spots for zelda, metroid etc.), and throw in an interview or two. They could add some origional artwork (I liked the galleries included in Metroid Prime showing the origional sketches). Stick the disk in Nintendo Power and raise the price if you have to a few bucks and send me something new each month.
I dont think that anyone could pass up the opportunity to have these disks if lets say you could play a demo of fzero or mario kart a month or two before it came out, just to wet your appetite. Not the whole game, just one track with only a few selectable characters.
I know Nintendo likes to be different, but in this case just get with the program and push your products in a productive way.
Shoot they could also promote GBA games with downloadable demos.

If you really don't know what to do, buy it, and ship it to me. i'll take care of everything from there. No need to thank me; a free demo disc is thanks enough.

Uh, that's the in-store demo. Are you sure he didn't swipe it?
But, staying on topic, hell yeah! It's something fans have been asking for (and the subject of a couple of NP's own Player's Polls) since the cube came out. Even a quarterly disc would be nice.
Getting greedy here, but maybe a cheap Cube game would be a nice giveaway, like the upcoming Pokemon Box game, which is really only a glorified storage unit, or maybe one of those Zelda games. But I'm getting ahead of myself and becoming way to optimistic. It would really be nice for NP to finally start including demo discs, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Nintendo could do three great things with a Nintendo Power Demo disc:
1. Promote Third Party Games
2. Promote GBA/GC connectivity with GBA demo downloads. (Among other things. There could even be exclusive Pokemon to download)
3. Sell Millions of Nintendo Power subscriptions
It's a win-win situation for the Big N'. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain, including huge profits.
Why wouldn't a company want to make millions?! Write to this address and express your frustration with gaming's greatest company:

I love playing that mario golf demo. Here's a tip for anyone who doesn't have the time to figure out the controls, but wants to see some of the cool spins and stuff... (i've never played any of the mario golf games, except the original on gameboy) anyways... to start the swing you hit the a button (hit b beforehand to switch to a power shot if you want). Then as it swing meter gets to the desired spot hit b, instead of a, to activate manual mode. Then when the swing meter gets back to the starting spot hit any one of these combinations as fast as you can - AA: top spin AB: super top spin BB: back spin BA: super back spin. Hope that helps anyone! I've had a lot of fun with it.
Also to stay on topic, NP should def. do demo disks!

I think the main reason that Nintendo hasn't released demo discs with NP is because Sony does that and therefore it must not be a good idea. Seriously Nintendo is stubborn and arrogant enough to not act on a great idea just because the competition thought of it first. Nintendo always wants to do stuff their own way regardless of how gamer-unfriendly it can be. Witness their obsession with GBA connectivity to the point that they're practically pushing it as an alternative to online gaming. It doesn't matter what's the best way, the NINTENDO way is always the way to go.

I usually don't go for Nintendo bashing, but Ian Sane has pointed out my main frustration with gamings greatest company. They are so damn stubbborn and pig headed!
Or at least they used to be. The company's new direction under the Satoru Iwata and the "Nintendo Council of Elders" seems to be lightening up a bit. They seem to be more aware of what they need to do in order to survive. Still since they make so much money, they are slow to change. Only time will tell how "progressive" the "New" Nintendo will actually be. Things are better than they were in the last days of Yamauchi. He ruled with an uncomprimising iron fist and was very resistant to change. Still, you have to love him, he's sort of like a modern day Samurai Warlord/General. (Contrast that to Ken Kutaragi whose more of a big headed putz)
Anyway, I'm hoping Big N' will lighten up and start releasing GC demo discs. It's a guaranteed money maker! Plus it would really help to promote GBA+GC connectivity if they included GBA demos. They could even have exclusive Pokemon! Tell me that wouldn't push GBA+GC connectivity.
Truthfully, I like GBA+GC link play. It can be really innovative and unique under the right circumstances. Final Fantasy Crytstal Chronicles is a PERFECT example of this. I haven't liked a FF game since FF7. Yet after playing FF:CC for five minutes, I knew I would buy it on day one! I even have two GBA's and am thinking about getting a third for friends who come to my home and don't have their own GBA.
Still, it's not an alternative to online, nor is it meant to be. That's another issue Nintendo needs to stop dragging it's feet on. However, I don't think they are missing out on much right now. I have been playing both X-box and Ps2 online and I can't really say much for either. I don't like most sports games and almost all of the Ps2 online games have been totally ruined by online cheaters. (Socom is trashed) I actually think Big N may have been right to wait. The magic of online gaming that came with my beloved Dreamcast is gone.

On the connectivity level I liked how Nintendo promoted Wario Ware in Wario world.

I dunno, I thought that idea was rushed. Especially how on the right side only gave you 1 mini game. And the first 2 I unlocked wernt very exciting.
Y'know, it'd be funny if we could play GCN demos courtesy of a Game Boy Advance cartridge =)

I have already sent an email to Nintendo about a year ago adressing this very issue. They sent me a reply saying that they had no plans to do so, but they appreciated my input. Basically, a form letter.
I still maintain that I would resubscribe to Nintendo Power in a heartbeat if they brought in demo discs, and I really don't know why they don't do that. It's really the logical thing to do.

truthfully, I think some well organized, popular Nintendo website (ahem! Planet GameCube) should start a petition on it's top page. I don't think Nintendo would argue with the results and this may prove to the stubborn old buzzards that they would infact make MILLIONS on GC demo discs!
