Title: Details on Canceled Metroid Game Surface

A classic take on the Metroid formula was reportedly in the works for 3DS.

Rumors have been circulating around for quite some time regarding a canceled 2D Metroid game for 3DS, and now we have some new information on the alleged handheld title that will never see the light of day.

According to Unseen64's Liam Robertson, the game was said to offer a faster experience than Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. The gameplay reportedly took advantage of the 3D depth of Nintendo's latest handheld, offering a 2.5D side-scrolling experience.

Additionally, the visual style was apparently a departure for the series, with Samus looking a bit thinner and more athletic than she has in prior entries.

Finally, while Robertson couldn't reveal the identity of studio that pitched Nintendo the project, he did note that it was "a pretty popular western developer." Considering an artist from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon developer Next Level Games posted some Metroid concept art in his portfolio, it's likely that the studio worked on this pitch.

This sounds like it could have been similar to Metroid Other M in terms of gameplay.

I actually wouldn't think this was so much Next level as much as I'd anticipate this potentially being Wayforward pitching a Metroid game, maybe? Their Ducktales Remastered/Shantae and the Pirate's Curse engine pulls off 2.5D pretty well and I can see them doing art that would be a departure for the series and ramping up the speed to really sell that acrobatic sort of feel I think Metroid games really need to nail.

It's funny to hear about this and the held back Ubisoft game at almost the same time.
It's also funny to think about how completely different my feelings are about the two.

A new Metroid game would be nice considering there hasn't been one for a while.

Can you really cancel something Nintendo didn't want in the first place?

I am dying for a new one. Metroid is my favorite franchise. I main Samus in Smash. I'm absolutely desperate for a new game. I'll do anything for a new Metroid or a new The World Ends With You

At least they confirmed a new TWEWY is in the works, though no guarantee on the release timeline.

There's a joke about abortion here somewhere, but I'm a class act tonight.

This thread is useless without a source.
