Title: Safe Words! Sign-up's now closed.
Post by: Khushrenada on January 27, 2015, 04:52:16 PM
Since Insanolord is only about the title and not about the responsibility, once again I must swoop in to save these forum and give them life. Not like Pokepal148's going do something except complain about a situation. Thus, in my quest to keep thinking outside the box and challenging what can be done with the forum template we have to use, I have come up with a new forum game to try.
My thinking was that it might be fun to do something like musical chairs or hot potato. However, how can you do that without music and just text? Moreover, if you just have people posting things and the host/moderator of the game suddenly says stop, how do you know that they were always planning to stop things at that point or if they are manipulating things so that certain people win and certain people lose? Well, clever son-of-a-gun that I am, I think I've stumbled on the solution.
The way the game will work is as follows. Let's say that 10 players sign up. (Which is asking a lot these days but a man can dream.) I will then post a list of 10 random words and the game will begin. The players who signed up will each choose one of the random words posted. The order can be determined by sign-up order or by randomly shuffling the names and getting a pecking order that way. Player one would then choose a word and post it. Player 2 would choose a word and post it and so on. You can't choose a word that another player has already chosen. One of those 10 words would be selected as a dud, a bomb, a hot potato. The player who chooses that word would then be eliminated from that round and out of the game. The dud word would also be stricken from the list.
The eliminated player would then send me a pm choosing one of the 9 remaining words as the new dud word. Resuming the order from when the player was eliminated, the remaining players would then choose and post one of the remaining words like the first round until the dud word is found and another player eliminated so on and so on until one person is left standing victorious.
I'll post an example of how this would look like below. I'll have sign-ups open until Wednesday Jan. 28 Midnight PST. I'll even make up and maintain a leaderboard in this post. The whole she-bang. Because when it is a Khushrenada game, it is a classy game. Feel free to post any comments and ideas below as well.

An example of the game in action.
Let's say there were 5 players and the choosing order was established as:
There are 5 words to choose from: House, Chain, Soda, Coyote, Fear. The host has chosen Coyote as the dud word.
Khushrenada goes first. He chooses Chain and posts Chain in the thread.
The host informs the players that Khushrenada is safe and Vudu is to now choose a word.
It is now Vudu's turn. He can select any of the words except chain which Khushrenada has already chosen. He selects coyote and posts that choice because he's not very good at forum games.
The host now pops in and informs all the players that Vudu has got the hot potato and it has blown up in his face. Vudu is out of the game and coyote is removed from the list of words.
As a last act, Vudu sends the host his choice for what he wants the next dud word to be out of the remaining words left which would be: House, Chain, Soda and Fear. Vudu selects House because he hasn't done anything right so far so why start now.
The host informs the players that the game resumes and it is now Thatguy's turn to choose as that it where the selection order was paused when Vudu was eliminated.
Thatguy chooses chain and posts that selection. Host posts that he is safe.
Stevey chooses soda and posts that selection. Host posts that he is safe.
S-U-P-E-R is faced with a tough choice. It's 50/50. If he selects the last safe word, Khushrenada would automatically be eliminated. Unfortunately, he selects house and gets it wrong. He is eliminated.
The host informs the players that S-U-P-E-R is out. S-U-P-E-R chooses fear as the next dud word. Host informs players that play has resumed.
It is now back to Khushrenada. He selects soda. Host informs that he is safe.
Thatguy chooses fear. He is eliminated. Host informs the players of this.
Of the two words now left, chain and soda, Thatguy selects chain as the final dud word.
Host informs the players that the game is back on.
But at this point, it's only on for one player. It is Stevey's turn to choose and he has a 50/50 shot at winning. If he selects the right word, Khushrenada is automatically eliminated. If he chooses the wrong word, Khushrenada automatically wins.
Stevey goes through a re-enactment of The Princess Bride and selects chain. He is eliminated and declares Thatguy and Khushrenada dirty rotten cheating mafia doctors even though that has no real bearing and as expected Khushrenada wins which is why he has to host the game instead to make it fair for the rest of the forum.
Now that I think about it, it is really Russian Roulette but with words instead of bullets which might be even more dangerous because words can hurt.
Get it? Got it? Good.

This might be more interesting if the list is swear words.

Well, I didn't want to go spoiling what some of the words might be like prostitute, hawtness, man-nipple and such in the example. It should be given I'm thinking about all angles. This is a Khushrenada game. Are you in?

But of course, how could I miss this historic event?
To be clear, I'm just talking about mild swears, nothing nasty. Stuff like heck, crap, tush, dirty floors, etc.

So this is basically Russian Roullette, but with references to stupid **** that happened on the forums?

I believe I answered that already while also spelling roulette correctly but yes, you've got it. And really, the more you think about it, isn't that really what musical chairs and hot potato really are as well? A way to prepare our children and make them pros at Russian Roulette? No wonder we won The Deer Hunter.

That's what I get for skimming. Pro Tip: If you're going to break forum rules, do it in the middle of a big, long post, because there's a good chance I won't be reading it that closely. At least when it's Khush, since I just assume there's nothing that valuable to take from his posts.

I will sign up, if only to try and avoid the "reply allpocalypse" that's about to start in the PMs.

What he should have done was use BCC. That way, no reply all, and people might be more likely to listen if they thought it was more directed at them and not everybody who's ever posted here.

But I wanted to show all the names. That was part of the point of it all. I think I pretty much named all our current and more frequent users. I still may have missed one or two. Still, for everyone that was included, they can feel happy they were included and are considered an important forum member.

Honestly, I may have made it seem overly complicated but it is really simple and I think after the first couple posts when the game begins, you'll understand it right away.

Good luck with that. I'm trolling the hell out of the staff meeting as I post this. This is my talent, my gift to the world.
You're a staff meeting. Does Crimm yell obscenities like he does on RFN?

Sign-ups are now closed. Game will begin in a little while. Hmmmm. I wonder if there is a way I can notify everybody at once when the game has begun? I only have 11 carrier pigeons. What to do, what to do.

If people like it, there could be another game of it in the future. My advice for you right now is to stop taking these forums for granted and check them everyday if you don't want to miss out on cool stuff like this.

What determined the turn order? People who go earlier have a clear advantage over people who choose later.

Perhaps. It really depends on when a person chooses a dud word and who gets to choose afterwards I think. As the game has been unfolding, part of me wonders if next time (if there is a next time) there should be a few more extra words as well with the possibility that it could loop back around to the person who chose first. At least that way, when it is two players left, the final guess wouldn't be a 50/50 proposition and have a potential for more back and forth. I didn't go that route because right now, I think this will lead to a lot more pressure with each pick as the players and choices get eliminated.
To actually answer your question, for this game, I gave all players a number based on when they signed up. 1-13. I then used a random number generator to give me that sequence of numbers in a new order and used that as the order selection sequence. In the future, it could be done by number of posts, username scrabble score rankings, alphabetical, previous game results, and any other criteria. The host doing the game could be as creative as they want in setting that part up.

Yes...I think having more words would be better. And perhaps allow players to write up to 3 words if they want to get risky and eliminate words from the list. That way there is more strategy.
We play a reading game in my English classes where you have sentences and you can read 1, 2, or 3 words in the sentence but if you read the last word you are out. The sentences are long and the game isn't really fair, but there is strategy in how many words your read.
This would be similar if there are 10 players and 20 words. Imagine Player 1 might want to say 5 words just to get rid of them while there is less of a risk. You could also have other special words like:
Skip a Player, Reverse Order, Go again, and so on.

Funny you should say that as thinking about what Spak-Spang described reminded me of the Balloon Busters mini-game in Mario Party 7.
Still, I like the fact that already this game is showing how we can do many variations on it. There is the basic game which would be the one going on now and the more complicated versions that Spak-Spang is describing. That's what has made mafia so big through all the variations we've been able to have. This game is showing potential to have many variations as well.

Right now, this game is more like Mario Party 2's mini-game Bowser's Big Blast
Interesting thing about that game is if all that players correctly dodge the bomb trigger and the bomb trigger is the last one left, it will reset all triggers and have the players start again. In our current forum game, if the bomb word is the last one left, the next player up is forced to take it. Another variation found!
