Title: LOST REAVER (used to be called Project Treasure) MEGA THREAD
Post by: ShyGuy on January 15, 2015, 12:08:46 AM
Title now finalized!
Project Treasure is a new Free to Play Wii U exclusive game from Bandai-Namco. Little is know so far, but the teaser in the 1-14-15 Nintendo Direct says it is a Four-player coop action game where you "clear traps, route enemies and seize treasure"
Judging from the header title above, something Egyptian is involved. Tomb Raiding perhaps?
Cast of Characters:
The Prom Date with a Gun (http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k302/shyguy70/projecttreasureworkinuzjtv_zps83b1da2d.jpg) (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/shyguy70/media/projecttreasureworkinuzjtv_zps83b1da2d.jpg.html)
Japanese School Girl with a Samurai Sword? Again? (http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k302/shyguy70/projecttreasureworkinvok6h_zpsdb9c4e94.jpg) (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/shyguy70/media/projecttreasureworkinvok6h_zpsdb9c4e94.jpg.html)
I'm hoping it's some school puzzle based 3rd person survival/action horror game, but it will probably be:a MOBA or Spelunky clone.
EDIT: Actually, you know what? Look at the green collars they are wearing? Some sort of Running-Man situation maybe? Play the game or collar blows your head off?

So here's an interesting rumor, apparently, there may be more than four characters, Some speculate that a split second partial face shot in the trailer belongs to a character called KOS-MOS (I bet that's not her birth name) who is from Xenosaga (from the makers of Xenoblade) This game was developed by Monolith Soft and published by Namco, so maybe?
From http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/01/rumour_could_xenosagas_kos-mos_be_appearing_in_wii_u_exclusive_project_treasure
and they got it from http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=147570416&postcount=80

As low as my expectations for a free-to-play game are, I'm hoping this is 3D. Because I would totally play it if it were some sort of team based treasure hunter.

Bandai Namco Games have been experimenting a lot with console free-to-play games, to mixed results. On the PS3, you have Tekken Revolution (waiting for energy), Ace Combat: Infinity (grind dozens of hours for a Raptor), and Soul Calibur: Lost Swords (single-player only). And on the Wii U, you have Tank! Tank! Tank! where the microtransactions is the retail game split in to chunks.
Depending on how much Nintendo has a hand on Project Treasure's development, we are either seeing a grinding, energy-timer slog or a "free-to-start" game echoes the shareware model of old. With Pokemon Shuffle seeming to have an energy-timer system, Nintendo is not opposed to such things.
I find it quite nice that Nintendo and Bandai Namco are sharing such a close relationship these past few years. Bandai Namco haven't been in my consideration for potential Nintendo partnerships in the past, so it is a nice surprise to see them working well together on Nintendo platforms.

I don't like the idea of an energy timer, but I rarely have time to play video games anyway so I can't see it eating up too much of my money.

I just want to say that despite this being the weirdest portion of the last Nintendo direct and not really interesting me as I avoid Free to Play games (except Windows Solitaire and Hearts), I've been quite impressed with Shyguy's first two posts and the investigative work he's done so far on this game already. A lot of threads claim to be Megathread's but this has proved to be one with such stellar work.

A new trailer from the Nintendo Direct JPN for 5.31.2015. The game looks to be a hybrid beat'em up and shooter in (what I assume) randomized dungeons. The detail on the environment and enemies look quite drab. It's obvious that the lion's share of attention is on the player characters.
I fear for the game being a grindy, junky beat'em up with bad randomized dungeons and free-to-play BS, but it does look wonderfully dumb.

I really just don't want this "cool down" bullshit in any free to play game. Just let me play when I want.
That being said, the game does look quite ridiculous. My interest is piqued.

Wow, new info! It looks kinda mediocre so far, sad to say. Closer to Earth Defense Force 2017 than Left 4 Dead.
Wow, new info! It looks kinda mediocre so far, sad to say. Closer to Earth Defense Force 2017 than Left 4 Dead.
Seeing as how I've only spent 10-12 hours in Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 while playing Earth Defense Force 2025 for 70+ hours, I find this comment as a compliment towards Project Treasure.
It's made in unreal engine according to Bandai-Namco's YouTube channel.
And the logo pops up on Bandai Namco's video! This is the most surprising facet of the game so far.

The frame rate should be better. I hope it gets better, but I don't have much faith in Unreal Engine on Wii U and in Bandai Namco's effort for an exclusive free-to-start title on the Wii U.
The environments and enemies look extremely drab, the characters look only okay, and the snippets of action don't inspire. But there seems to be just enough silliness for me to probably spend a stupid amount of time and maybe some money in the game. I just pray to the stars that it doesn't have a miserable energy system as seen in Ace Combat: Infinity and Soul Calibur: Lost Swords. With any luck, Lost Reavers will look to Warframe and Phantasy Star Online 2 on how to implement free-to-play systems for an Action-RPG.

Go into a dungeon, fight the mummies, watch your partner's backs, revive them if needed, and somebody defenseless carries the bucket back to the pickup point.

How long do you think it will take for the game to launch in the west? I think it would be a nice thing to see before the end of 2015, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Who knows how long it will be between the beta and the release? What's Bamco's usual deal with this sort of thing?

The beta for Ace Combat: Infinity lasted for a week in February 2014. The game was later released on May 27th, 2014 for North America. Japan and Europe releases were also in May 2014. Typically, a beta is not far off from the full release of the game.
However, Ace Combat: Infinity had an early, Japan-only beta in December of 2013. For Lost Reavers, I don't recall a date announced for the Japan beta. We might be waiting until the late spring of 2016 to see Lost Reavers be released.
If the game doesn't get canceled by then, of course. Ah, I don't think the chances of that are all that high. It looks like Bandai Namco already has a bunch of game made already.

Hmm, it looks as junky as I feared. Still, I want to try it. Might be fun enough to get a few loot drops. Hopefully Bandai Namco doesn't do something stupid with the microtransactions.

Harada said the project was used to train new employees for game development which explains why it looks rough, I assume Nintendo funded it because Wii U needs games and they want to build that relationship. It's free so I'll at least try it.

Assuming Bandai Namco has a handle on the Nintendo Network to work some sense out of it, I don't see why not.
It's vital that it has that functionality since I doubt this game will last past a hot week. Okay, maybe two hot weeks.

Nice to see that there's updates. Though, I fear that this game only has these 2-3 bosses and environments.

Apparently, Lost Reavers is receiving future updates. Japan will be getting new weapons, gear, and a new dungeon soon. If it keeps getting played, it will likely receive more. More variety is a good thing.

I would gladly spend that than get worked over with a bunch of silly micro transactions.
You can count me in for the game.

Bandai Namco JP are putting out an explanation video series hosted by (I assume) one of the voice actresses in the game. It's cute and looks cheaply produced. Fits the game.

I wouldn't necessarily say the game is cute, but cheaply produced? Hell yeah.
I am actually eagerly anticipating this game. It just looks like crazy, stupid fun.

Title: Re: LOST REAVER (used to be called Project Treasure) MEGA THREAD

Short version: Yep, garbage.
Not the funny kind either. The melee and shooting combat do not feel good or fun at all. I spent most of my time with Victoria who wields two different pistols. She seems to be designed for an accurate player. I would like to get more head shots against the zombies, mummies, and skeletons of this game, but the controls are sloppy. More critically, there is a weird delay and disconnect with aiming and bullet travel that feels pretty bad. The melee combat fares a bit better in that it's merely boring at the start. Maybe there's some interesting combo strings in later experience levels for the melee focused characters.
As for the free-to-start shortcomings, the free currency gain is glacially slow. The laboratory menu brings up three items with a countdown timer. With in that time, you must use analyzers to decrypt the loot. The rare drop requires 4000 points of decryption. A standard analyzer gives me 2-8 points. I have only gained 10 in my few hours of play and those were free.
This game is such a weird, exclusive thing that I will stick with it to see how it shakes out. I'm just warning those who are not so curious: I think this is a bad game.

Post by: Evan_B on April 15, 2016, 12:41:05 AM
That's a bit harsh! I think the game is slow to start, but there's tons of neat little details to be found throughout. The skill screen is suitably massive, and the neat reset item is sure to encourage different builds. The shooting is weird but there are tons of control options to make it buttery smooth. Unlocking weapons isn't that bad (I used six decoder keys and ended up getting an item), and of course, the missions become more interesting (read: difficult and full of enemies) once you move into the next tier. Also, it's unfortunate that half of the characters rely so heavily on ranged weaponry, since the melee combat is really much more interesting.
I think there's still plenty of neat stuff to find, though I haven't quite gotten the grasp of it all. Sure, it's a timesink, and there doesn't seem to be any friend-related matchmaking (I sue hope that changes with the full release), but it is stupid and fun.
EDIT: Yeeeeah, this game doesn't give a good first impression, but once you hit level 5 and start obtaining key cards and running the more complex dungeons, the tension amps up a lot and the game becomes really fun. The first boss battle is INSANE! Atop that, there's chances that you'll encounter minibosses that will drop extra loot as well. I could definitely see myself getting really lost in this game.

Title: Re: LOST REAVER (used to be called Project Treasure) MEGA THREAD

The game makes a terrible first impression. The graphics are extremely subpar and the combat is repetitive as hell in the early levels. Leveling up is slow at first which makes the game worse as you're just going through the same dungeon with very minor variations. With 4 players it's an absolute cakewalk to the point where we were completing missions in less than 3 minutes. Add in the load times and the time you spend trying to find a room and it makes for a not very good game.
After hitting level 10 I finally got a 2 star dungeon and aside from pitting you with more enemies the dungeon is exactly the same pattern. Clear an obstacle, destroy the generators, decrypt the thing, get the relic and go through some kill rooms. There's very little replay value here.

Get to level 15! Then you can reconsider the dungeon length and repetition.

Tried, it's... not amazing so far. The levels seem super easy so far. Level design is basic. I may keep playing to level 15, to see if it gets better.

IT DOES!
I'll be posting impressions pretty soon, once I hit level 20 and open up the third tier maps. But I have become quite obsessed with soloing/rerunning the old dungeons for collectibles- there are materials you can gather in each stage that, once you complete a full set, unlock either a special weapon/outfit or consumable items for the workshop/weapon exchange.
You kinda have to be a raid-running sort of person to really get in the game, though. Oh, and the bosses are IN. SANE.

I saw this trailer pop up for Lost Reavers 2.0, it contains a new stage, new enemies, a new boss and some bug fixes. Looks like this update has been out since 1st June... so whoops totally flew under the radar! There is also a "ranked defense battle" special event that runs from 15th-29th June.
Previously when I tried playing it there was a 3/4 chance whenever I tried to join a lobby I'd get a connection error, so I didn't make a whole lot of progress. However I respect your opinion Evan just enough that I might give it another shot.

I played some of the beta. It was fun for a while, but its not that great of a game. Im surprised they are putting more effort into the game and releasing more content.
