Title: BUNK COMCAST, I GET 80 OTA CHANNELS!
Post by: Nile Boogie Returns on December 27, 2014, 06:37:19 PM
WOW! I don't watch a lot of TV and when I do its really on 5-6 channels. Anyway, my aunt's over today and after the kids finish playing Mario Kart they flip on the Tv and not the cable. "the Adventures of Superman" was on some station I've never heard of. So I started looking over other channels OTA and I just keep reining into stuff Ive never seen before. While I'm not so impressed by the content (its a whole lotta nothing on some of these stations) Its 80 free channels. This with coupled with the triforce of video app (Netflix, WWE and Crunchyroll) I can tell Comcast to go climb a pole.
Now, as so as I can figure out how to convert Cell Phone Signals in to Internet, I'll be scott free!

I even have a tuner and antennae on my laptop so I can pick up Tv and radio wherever I go. Between that and Netflix, I am pretty set most days. We have cable but only because it comes with the Internet and I still like to record the shows at work on the DVR for reference.

I've thought about ditching cable a lot - really what they should do is let you pay per channel (which should come out to something like 10 cents per channel if they are divided evenly, but of course that won't happen). I basically only regularly watching The Daily Show, The Colbert Report (I miss you already), The Walking Dead and Football. I have Verizon, so I can already watching Monday Night and Thursday Night games on my phone without the need for cable, plus I wait until after the shows (not football games) are over to watch them so I can skip the commercials. Maybe I could get rid of cable and just upgrade my internet.

I would 100% ditch satellite if the wife wouldn't complain so much.

When I worked for Comcast, my first day on the job I asked why can't we buy single channels. My trainer told me that it cost Comcast $5 per costumer for ESPN alone and $3 for HBO. Until networks charge providers less for the big networks then providers can't sell them to consumers as single channels. I still think is BS but my 2 years in tech support there didn't provide me the inside skinny. And since my services were all comp'd while I was there, I guess I never noticed the vast improvements in OTA broadcast standard.
(but the wife would kick and scream without cable i believe)

The only thing I care about at all on live TV is sports, but I care about that a whole lot. I pay for the Internet streaming services for NHL and MLS, but those don't include games that are nationally televised on ESPN/NBC/Fox, so I still need cable for those.

I figure a few years more and you can just use cell phone networks for your internet. ATT and Verizon already offer alternatives to Comcast/BigCable in some areas.

Not until they drop data caps. And that'll happen shortly after hell freezes over.

Wait what? You pay to stream a whole season of whatever sport you want and you only get the games none of the big stations wanted? WTF!

It's just the way the TV contracts are written. The Flyers play 82 games a year, and 10 or 15 of those are going to be nationally televised. Sounders play 34, and probably a higher percentage are that way, but still the overwhelming majority aren't. This is one of the downsides of being a fan of a big, popular team that gets picked up for the big broadcasts more often.

Yeah, I would miss live sports. Being a Eagles fan is cool since even without cable you get every football game in your market, even if its an ESPN/NFL Network game but the Flyers, and Sixers never come on regular TV. So that would be a bummer.
Sling TV allowing certain channels (ESPN, ESPN 2 and selection of others) to be streamed over the internet starting at $20mo. No additional equipment required. Add-on Channel Packs for $5ea.
so instead of paying a minimum of $60mo+ for 10 channels you want (not including OTA broadcast channels) and 148+ channels you never watch (not including cost of equipment), you can pay $20 for 6-8 channels you want to watch, another $5 to add 6-7 more, buy an antenna for all the HD OTA channels + $15-$20 for Netflix and Hulu and you should be set.
edit: and I say keep an eye on this as all the details aren't out, and it's still probably bundling things you don't want with things you do, but it's a good fist step in breaking down the massive pricey bundles that cable providers give now.

Cord cutting is a mixed bag, it costs more in the long run if you watch sports especially but if you don't care about sports then it can be a real bargain. I tried it completely for 3 whole years. We lived in an area where OTA reception was terrible so we couldn't even get major sports broadcasts we had to watch the Super Bowl on my laptop with a five minute delay because our internet sucked at the time too. If you want to go the completely free route get a laptop with a Digital Tuner and an antennae like I did and get your internet from hotspots. Even without Netflix you can get some decent stuff on Crackle and with all the networks offering most of their shows online anyways it can be done but not as easily on a TV as a computer. Even Hulu is lacking some stuff on the box that is watchable on a PC.

I'm ready to cut the cord.
I live in a house w/ cable, but I don't use cable. Everything i need is found online, and in some cases, before it even airs through cable anyway. So I'm content having cut my cable, even though I still technically have it.
2x smart TVs, 2x smart BRD players, 2x Roku, 2x computer, 2x Android phone, 1x Android tablet and "100mps" internet means I am set. If I want to watch it, I will find a way.
I couldn't care less for sports, I have Netflix and Amazon Prime, I'm logged into Hulu plus on my Wii U (not that I ever use it... who pays for commercials!? such BS) and I know my way around a google search. so WTF do I need cable for?
edit: If I invest in a few OTA antenna's then I am pretty much covered from all angles that matter. Not to mention there is a Buffalo Wild Wings downtown, so if I really needed to see that sporting event of choice.... well, that's always an option too.

Been utilizing cable less and less. I've fallen behind on even HBO shows (a main reason why I still like cable).
I could see my habits leading me towards giving it up in a year or two.
As an out-of-market sports fan, live sports already means going to a bar, and I'd save money buy paying $200 (or w/e) for NFL Sunday Ticket Mobile (or w/e) and ditching cable.

The ESPN thing is nice, but a lot of the sports I'd want to watch are on other channels, like NBCSN or Fox Sports 1 and 2. I wish there were an option for things like NHL GameCenter Live or MLS Live where I could get the nationally televised games on there, even if it meant paying a bit more. If I could do that and also they got rid of blackout rules I'd be perfectly happy witout cable.

Here in Philly, there are only 2 "real" internet providers, Comcast and Verizon FiOS . And the way they snag you is if you only want internet you gotta pay 69.95/m for something solid (40/5) but for $30 more you get 180 channels and a home phone( Not bad). ITS THE MADE UP TAXES AND FEES THAT REALLY PISS ME OFF SENDING MY BILL OVER 160.
Thinking I might go Fios. 79.99 triple play 2 years no contract. Plus since Comcast is still using coaxial, they tend to compress the hell out of the image to some greasy, barley HD hogwash. Hockey in HD is really, really awesome but besides the Winter Classic and the playoffs there are hardly enough games OTA to enjoy.
Comcast is a juggernaut of epic proportions in this city owning 2 teams 2 stadiums the tallest building not in New york or Chicago and soon to build another skyscraper about the size of the Chrysler building.

So now Fios is upping the ante! some movie channels, HD-DVR, 25/25 internet, home phone AND a $400.00 Visa gift card( w/2 year contract) for $79.99. NOW that's an offer! I guess they are having a hard time getting footing here and are offering deals that are really hard to pass up.

...and thats a go ladies and gents. FioS is on the way. Can't pass up a deal this good and I Comcast picture quality is pretty bad in HD I think its a solid move. And my bill will be under 100 w/tax till 2017, when the star hip AngelsMoon will have returned by then ...I've said too much.

I just had to rip into Comcast again over my girls new account with them....
Wrong price quoted. Charged for free installation. Charged for equipment that was "free" at pick up. Channels that brochure says were included weren't.
Hot mess. Think I came out way better in the end, but won't know for sure till Monday.

Thought I would revive this thread, not for the update of the above post, which I will update anyway, but to ask
"What is the best over the air antennae for the cheapest possible price to get?"
as far as an update on the above post. 100mbs+ internet + modem rental for $40.00 month. I'm currently looking into the best modem/router combo (combined or separate), but no one on here responded when I asked in the computer thread, so I'll ask again here.
what is the best Modem and/or Wifi router combo that can be had for ~$200 or less?
I did just purchase a wifi router... TP-LINK Archer C7 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless AC Gigabit Router (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BUSDVBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for $90, because I needed something to expand wireless over a large house, but I could still use a new "combo" unit for my girls place as well to kock $10mo off that comcast bill.

Honestly, it kinda doesn't matter. The cheapest Walmart $20 antenna will do you fine if you live in a relatively dense area. If you feel like it, Youtube has awesome videos on how to build you very own powerful antenna out of coat hangers and 2x4 for pretty much no effort at all. So there's that.

ultra thin indoor antenna for < $10 is good for 80 OTA channels?

No doubt. Long as you not in some "Digital dead zone" (40% of Philly can't get ABC OTA since the signal gets washed) you should be fine. I wouldn't spend more than 30bucks on a Antenna.
