Title: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Phil on November 04, 2014, 08:30:16 PM
I was able to get the game on release, but I've only put about five hours into it. I chose the Paladin as my first life, and I've been defeating cute monsters, fulfilling tasks, beefing up my gear, and enjoying the game immensely. It's part RPG, part Animal Crossing, all fun.

Did anyone pick this up?

I've been on the fence about it. It hasn't really been on my radar but I keep hearing such good things about it. However, Smash Bros. 3DS is still taking up my time along with fall TV that I've put off worrying about getting this anytime soon. It's something I could see myself buying a year from now. No urgency to play it.

Yeah, I'm still doing All-Star for some characters. That's actually what I was doing this evening! hehe

I hope to play more Fantasy Life soon, but I have other games I have to cover first. :(

Yeah, I bought this on release and it's pretty much the only game I've played since then. Unfortunately, that also means that I'm way ahead, but, I'd still be up for multiplayer for anyone who would like it. I can use weak weapons or something if that would be preferable. I also plan to buy the DLC though so I may not be able to play with non-DLC people for much longer.

Screw Smash Bros, this will probably be my game of the year!

Yes.

I'm frustrated that they are putting artificial roadblocks in my way to becoming a fish expert and how they trolled me by showing me the Lord Fish in a story area I could not get back to that day.

Seriously enough...  I just found out the reason that I couldn't fish in Lava Cave was that I needed to defeat enemies to bring down the barriers... I'm a Fisherman not a Soldier... I'm level 15 and I only have a Dagger skill of 2...

I'll probably pick it up in December. I have less game money due to some extra expenses and a planned vacation.

I could help out, I'm a proficient wizard so I can battle enemies and also heal you to protect you.

You probably don't need another obsession like this. ;)

That be fun.
I finally got to a place in the story where I can get my allies and my general strategy has been little hits of opportunity and a lot of hiding behind meat shields.  Which let me finally get my Lava fish except for the Lord fish in Lava area.

Sure! I'll have most of the weekend free. I'm in the CST (GMT -6) time zone.

Oh yeah, forgot about timezones, I'm in EST. This coming Sunday would work for me, say, around 8 PM your time?

I'm seeing a friend on Sunday, but I don't think it'll go into the evening. That should be fine, though, Mop it up! I'll keep you posted, regardless!

Ah, I could swing later in the evening/night, but I couldn't do earlier.

The in-game text chat is kinda sluggish, so do you want to use NWR's chat or something?

Sorry for being MIA last night, Mop it up! I fell asleep for a nap around 6:00 pm and didn't wake up again until midnight!  :Q

Hee hee, that's quite some nap!

Well, this week will be busy with holiday stuff, but if you want to try again tomorrow (Tuesday) around the same time, that would probably be the only day this week that I could make it. Unless you actually do want to play at midnight sometime, because I'm an insomniac so I'm usually up then anyway.

Gah! I keep missing these messages!  :'(

(I'm not really frustrated, I just hope I'm not annoying you.)

Anyway, we can do something around midnight perhaps this weekend. I stay up pretty late when I'm on holiday.

I got it! But I still have other games to play..always that. Right now I'm onto finishing extra content on LaytonXWright games, then I'm on Pokémon Omega Ruby.

Every 3DS games I have left are monsters (40-50h plus of gameplay) How is Fantasy life situated in term of hours of gameplay?

Important : I'm not a completionist

It depends on what are your goals for the game. If all you're looking to do is complete the story, that'll be around 10 hours. If you want to max out your starting Life and complete all its challenges, add another 10-20, depending on which Life you chose. If you want to max all twelve Lives, you're definitely looking at over 100 hours. And that's before I even mention the side quests and other things.

There is also a DLC pack for the game that adds a new area, two story chapters, more challenges for each Life, raises the level caps, and adds a few other odds and ends.

Gah! I keep missing these messages!  :'(

Nah it's all right mate, I know things happen. Especially about the holidays. I can sometimes be flaky myself, so I don't get bothered if someone else does it. Keep me posted!

I think I might get this in December if I can. We'll see how things go.

No one I normally play Monster Hunter with seems interested in playing now so I may just need to move on to this.

How much does the DLC cost?

Post by: Mop it up on November 30, 2014, 03:11:17 PM
Yeah, sorry mate, but after playing MH3 on both Wii and Wii U, I've had enough of that game.

DLC is $8.99. It is already on the cartridge so the size is 2 blocks. The really sucky thing about the DLC though is that if you have it, you can't play online with people who don't have it, and vice versa.

My friend and I have decided that we're going to get the DLC by the end of the year. If anyone who doesn't plan on getting it still wants to play, we'd better do so soon!

Sorry, Mop it up.
I'm on a new medication, and it tends to knock me out after I take it.

Nah, it's fine mate, I know life can interfere. If you were a contractor or something like that, then it would be annoying, but it's just a videogame. ;)

Since we're nearing the holidays then I'm not sure when I might be available this weekend, so I'll report back later with a time suggestion. It'd probably be sometime late in the day, most likely.

At least this will get me off of the stand-up **** list for a short bit!
I'm still waiting for that stuffed-crust pizza I ordered.
Title: Re: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Stratos on December 16, 2014, 09:00:08 PM
First order I ate it on the way so gave up the trip. It's a long drive to your house.

Second time I think you gave me the wrong address because I ended up in Mexico. I ate your pizza then because that was a long trip.

Recently the weather has held me up in traffic...so I ate your pizza while I sit in traffic.

Now I think you are just prank calling me and I ask why am I still taking orders from a pink, egg spitting dinosaur-like creature who tries to pay me in gold coins and mushrooms. I don't even work at Pizza Hut anymore and I am still making and taking these pizzas!

And worst of all it is causing my waistline to grow with all of these un-deliverable pizzas.

Don't forget the times I mugged you and ate the pizza! I don't know if it was Mop it up's pizza but I did it like 30 times so I figured at least one would be hers.

Ah, I think someone in the game explains Ally Mode, maybe someone in the guild office. It's an icon on the touch screen that you can tap to turn on. But make sure you add me as an ally within the game!

Do you want to try again on Sunday at 10 PM or so (or later)?

I pretty much play only online, except when I had to play offline to advance the story.

So I got this for Christmas.  Got some other games too but this is the only one I've played yet because it's pretty awesome.  It reminds me of Animal Crossing except that it has more goals and conflict which fits my gaming tastes better.  I like having a little direction.

It does feel like the first game in a series though, in that it has some rough stuff that you figure will be addressed in sequels.  I'm tackling all the jobs at once and it's a real pain to have to return to the guild office to switch jobs.  It would be nice to be able to do that on the fly.  Or alternatively make it so I don't need to do so.  Right now the game will give me a challenges to complete like "kill five slimes in the magic cave" but it states "as a paladin" or "as a hunter" so I have to have the right job.  So if I go through the area and kill five slimes with a different job it doesn't count towards the challenge.  Every area has its enemies split up among the jobs so if I have to revisit the area multiple times to defeat the specific enemies it wants for the job.  If I have the licence for that job shouldn't that count?  Once I have a wizard licence aren't I always a wizard even if I'm spending time as a miner?  Oh I need the wizard's robe on or it doesn't count?

But overall the game is a lot of fun and part of me wonders if my method of play isn't the "right" way to play in the first place and if I just stuck to one job for a long time I wouldn't notice this one mechanic I don't care for.

Wow, that's pretty surprising. The nice thing about this game is that you can play at your own pace and do whatever you feel like doing at the time, so I wouldn't say there is a right or wrong way to play. But it probably would be a better idea to focus on one Life for a while instead of switching around a lot. Do you perchance have any interest in the online multiplayer?

Boy, Phil, the game has never been as challenging as it was last night! Not sure if I was really helping, but at least I tried, and gained some levels. This is actually my second character I created to play with online peeps, but then I never ended up playing that much, probably also due to holidays and such, so I didn't get that far.

Maybe next time, things'll be better!
Title: Re: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Phil on January 11, 2015, 10:55:30 PM
Oh, you were fine!

Today I crossed the 40 hour mark. I think there's but one chapter of the story to go, but since it's always mostly dialogue and going to and from places, I'm going to deal with that later when I'm up to it. Tonight I have my Mastered class total up to four: Paladin, Archer, Mercenary, and Miner. The former two I reached Hero status and earned some nifty gear. I beat the Napdragon and earned a Paladin Sword. Couldn't beat the Golden or Silver Dragons, but I tried them before I got my new Hero equipment.

I feel like this game is such a struggle. I enjoy completing quests but I absolutely dread the time when I have to progress to the next story event to get to new areas. And the three lives I'm focusing on for their Focus and Dexterity are very hard to progress in themselves. I always feel like I can do or go somewhere and accomplish something when I turn the game on but some long-term goals are just so tedious.
Title: Re: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Phil on January 15, 2015, 10:07:26 PM
Is it true that the story can be played without killing anything? I would imagine that's partially true for the Lives that don't have anything to do with combat. '

Anyhow, I play one chapter of the story and then do a lot of extra Life-related content so I don't burn myself out on the game. There's only so much dialogue I can sit through at one time, even if I do find it clever and charming at times.
Title: Re: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Triforce Hermit on January 28, 2015, 08:39:26 PM
Okay, I've mastered 5 classes, become a Hero Paladin and Woodcutter too. Defeated the Silver Dragon, but that was as a Mercenary so I will have to do it again. I'm almost lvl 50 so I might get Origin Island soon. I think I'm at the point right before the end of the game. I like this game a lot, but the music is really annoying. Plot kinda reminds me of late NES - early SNES era plots, which is nice.

Anyone have recommendations on what level I should be before I go into Ancient Ruins? I'm wondering if anyone would want to help me go kill the bosses in Ancient Ruins? I haven't touched online yet so I don't know how the quests work. If two Paladins kill a Silver Dragon and cash it in, do both of them have the quest clear or just the host? Yeah, lot of questions  :P: :
Title: Re: Did anyone else buy Fantasy Life?
Post by: Mop it up on January 29, 2015, 07:42:44 PM
It depends on the way the quest is worded. If the quest just involves defeating a monster, then all paladin players in that area would get credit for the kill and the quest. If the quest requires turning in a bounty to complete, then only the player who turns in the bounty will complete the quest.

If you can already defeat the silver dragon or other bosses in that general area, you would probably be able to handle the ancient ruins as well.

I would volunteer to help you out, but unfortunately I have now gotten the DLC so I can no longer play with non-DLC players. I'd only be able to help if you downloaded the DLC first. And if you don't mind that I'm twice your level, though if that's an issue I could just equip weak gear.

Is it true that the story can be played without killing anything? I would imagine that's partially true for the Lives that don't have anything to do with combat.
I believe the main story can be, yes. The times where enemies are part of the story, Butterfly asks in some form whether or not you want to fight. And if you choose not to, you really won't have to fight.

Fantasy Life 2 looks like a really bad version of the 3DS game with town management with a "2" attached to it to make it seem greater than it actually is.

That's why you shouldn't "vote with your dollars" and instead just buy what you want.

Truth. That's why I hate that argument. The only way that makes a difference is if you can get like 1,000,000 people to work with you in what you buy or don't buy and even then, you have to clearly show and articulate to whoever it is you are buying or withholding purchases from what you are doing and why to get the right message across.

I did just buy what I want.  I bought a game that interested me, thought it was really good and looked forward to the sequel.  Just the sheer fact that this is "Fantasy Life 2" suggests that Fantasy Life 1 was a fairly successful game.  So then they put it's sequel on a completely different format?  How often does that happen?  Valkyria Chronicles and Bayonetta are two I can think of like that and both got some major backlash (but at least Bayonetta 2's case Nintendo footed the bill to create the game that was not going to get made otherwise).

The logic is pretty goofy.  The 3DS is for gamers that want MORE from portable gaming than what a phone can provide.  So in theory they're casting away most of their existing audience for one for which "Fantasy Life" has no real value.  Or did the game not do that well and Level 5 figures that the IP will find an audience on phones?  But then why call it "Fantasy Life 2" if you're going for a new audience that won't know the first game?

Is this something I'm going to have worry about with Japanese games from now on?  Level 5 was one of the most consistently talented devs in the post-2006 "Japanese devs all went crazy at the same time" gaming landscape.

I can't lie - I hope Fantasy Life 2 for mobile is a colossal financial failure.

Yeah, I heard about this too, it's a bummer. Oh well, at least the game doesn't look like anything I'd want.

well at the very least Fantasy Life is a fantastic game with hours of content to hold you over the sequel. I wouldn't pay much attention to the second one unless its enjoyable in some capacity. Also If it makes anyone feel better, Fantasy Life itself went through two different stages of metamorphoses to produce what we got currently, wonder if thats a possibility for this new one.
