Title: SD Card Adapter?
Post by: Don'tHate742 on June 26, 2003, 09:27:08 AM
I was browsing Lik-Sang.com and I came across the SD Card Adapter. It said it would be released July 18 in Japan starting at 64 MB. I might import it becuase its only 20 bucks.
My quesetion is....
Is it just a bigger memory card?
I remember reading all this stuff that Nintendo was going to do with it such as use it for its rewritability like the 64DD, do you think they still have plans to?
Do you think that this could be used as a cheap alternative to using carts in the "GB Next"? It could compete against Sony's Memory sticks...

No, it is not just a bigger memory card. In fact, unless the game was specifically written to recognize the SD card, it won't see it.

I would hope so, otherwise what would be the point. Since you need an adapter to plug it in to the GC it should work. This could be nice since you would be able to read the data with a computer then you could email/download game saves etc for the GC. It would also be nice to backup game saves on a PC since I always worry about memory cards getting corrupted.

For backing up game saves, many importers carry USB to memory card adapters. They usually run around $50. Yes, it sucks that you can't use SD cards as memory cards but think about it for sec. With a 64MB SD card, you'd never need to buy a memory card again. That's eight times the storage space for around $40 plus the cost of the adapter. The only money Nintendo would get would be off of the adapter. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot by letting you save any and everything to the SD cards.

Maybe not. Panasonic help design the SD standard and they have an interest in making it a worldwide standard. Nintendo and Panasonic partnered for the Q. Panasonic may be pushing Nintendo (financially) to get the SD card on a major console. I am super surprised that Sony didn't go with Memory Stick for the PS2. It would have been a much better standard. They are making the right decision on the PSP (if it catches on).
You're probably right though. Just a thought.
I have a few spare SD cards (8mb, 16mb) that aren't as useful anymore that I'd like to reuse as super-momory cards. Oh well.
