Title: GBA Games Worth It?
Post by: nathan on June 24, 2003, 06:47:20 PM
Alright, Im a moderate gamer I guess you could say (I have about 15 GC games) and I was wondering if a GBA or GBP would be worth it? I can get a used GBA for slightly lower than a new GBP, but Im leaning towards the GBP. anyway, are the games for it worth the $50 for whichever I buy? the games Im most interested in are Phantasy Star Collection, Golden Sun, and Breathe of Fire II. . . so do you think those games would be worth $50 to play? or should I buy say WindWaker or Star Fox? oh well, thanks in advance, lol

Thats a hard one. You see the GBP and Zelda are well worth the $50. The GBP itself isn't a game however, so you will end up spending more money on games and stuff. Plus side is that GBA games are cheap as dirt. You can get used ones for around 10 bucks.
So if you have only $50 get zelda, because it is a single payment for a great game. But if you have more money to get the GBA games go for the GBP because in the long run you will get more fun out of it. In a perfect world you could get both. Much like me!! Not to brag or anything .

Well I have $290 lol, but of course not all of it goes to video games. I was thinking the GBP is a one-time investment, and--like you said--the games are dirt cheap. and plus, with the left over $240 (supossing I spent it all) I could buy a ton more GBA games than GC. one drawback though, there's no way to carry all the games (GC and GBC) in one small case like the GC game case.
oh yea, any other games you would highly recommend? I was also looking at LOTR: the Two Towers; is it any good?

On GBA? Goodness no. Unless you see a really good review, avoid licensed GBA games entirely.

On of the biggest mistakes i made was buying LOTR: The fellowship of the rings on GBA. The game was horrible, short(even thoguh cover said 20+ hours of gameplay) and otherwise boring.
I cant believe people cant make even a decent game from the greatest story ever written...

Golden sun 1 (and 2 i guess, haven't got it yet) and Metroid Fusion are must haves for GBA owners, pokemon r/s are also if your into it (and you damn well should be its awsome!) the castlevania games are also top shelf, they all get over 9's in reveiws (ive only got the first one how ever, circle of the moon). any of the SNES ports are top stuff, (personally i prefer the snes originals, but thats not for everyone)
i love my GBA more than my GCN

Im definately getting Golden Sun and maybe Fusion soon after. hows Breathe of Fire II? no one has said anything about it on here but IGN gave it a pretty good score (8.3) and it sounds pretty cool too. Im also thinking about Mario World 3. . . just too many games to choose from! lol. the Castlevania games dont really interest me, nor does Advance Wars but Im seeing all these good reviews of them. I might just get that Bruce Lee game too

Yeah... I could use a hand picking out a game or two.
I'm going on this really long trip (40 days) and I want some multi-player GBA games to pass the time with my sis... preferably single-pak ones because getting two games for multi-play is just expensive.
I'm asking for the good and the bad outside of my knowledge. I know firsthand that some really suck, like Advance Wars single pak for instance. Other single-paks are really good like Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Advance 2 is ok.
Thanks in Advance... which could be a very poor pun.

Some games have a very good single-pack multiplayer mode, such as Mario Kart Advance: Super Circuit. Which is awesome to play with friends. You can kill time very fast with it, of course you're going to need two GBA's and a Link Cable.
And Advance Wars single-player doesn't suck, I've easily played more than 100 hours with it, just to have every S-Rank in the War room. I still haven't completed it. If you're a strategic nut, this is definately a game for you.
If you like platform games I would choose SMA: Yoshi's Island and for RPG's I would choose Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. Let me know that you think.
As for me would you choose F-Zero Maximum Velocity (like that name) or Castlevania Circle of the Moon. They're bot great games, but I don't know which game will be more fun. driving at 500 km per hour or vampire-hunting with a whip, hmmm tough choice. Help would be appreciated.
Oh and Nathan, I found Breat of Fire II mediocre, not as good as the first one. The graphics and the translation into English also turns me of. Golden Sun is way better and if you're into strategic RPG's, it will soon be paradise for you my friend.

alrighty, perhaps I'll get Advance Wars instead then. one more thing, are there any GBA game that support Dolby surround sound, by chance? lol, I really dont want to have to sit through terribly repetitive music on my TV
heres the games I want so far, tell me if it sounds pretty good: Golden Sun Metroid Fusion Golden Sun 2 Tactics Ogre Super Mario World 3 Pokemon Sapphire (just maybe) Advance Wars Phantasy Star Collection (maybe) Breathe of Fire II (if I cant find anything else)
Im not going to buy every game for $30, so I'll buy them in the order of their price-drops, but that is pretty much in the order I want them

Oh, ah.... just to avoid confusion I didn't mean that Advance Wars single-player sucks--I actually love it. Just the single-pak multiplayer sucks. Only one map available, a few minor units and no battle animation. It suck.
So any other good single-pak multiplayer games? How's it work in Super Circuit with one pak anyway? Thanks.

Yeah, I'll add my 2 cents.
F-Zero: Max Velocity is all about gameplay mastery. Graphics and sound are very good but you are mostly going to be concentrating all your energy on memorizing tracks and perfecting your cornering. I would say it's a hardcore game. I found the learning curve really difficult and eventually returned the game for an exchange but I'm just impatient sometimes... other people can really get into it.

Odeix, you just link two GBA's, put the cartridge in and turn the one with the game one. Select single pack (I don't know what it's exactly called, I have the Japanese version, but it's in the menu. Then you are asked (correct me if I'm wrong, I can't read Japanese very well) to turn the other GBA on. Then it's starting to load. Everyone plays as Yoshi with a different colour and there are four tracks to choose from. The animation is less smooth of Yoshi, but there are weapons avaiable (not all of them), but I have to say that it's the best single-pack experience of them all for it's size. And it's even more fun if both of you has the game. Every track is avaiable and you can race with your buddy, that is totally sweet.

I got a GBA as soon as it came out, along with a handful of games, but I honestly have played few GBA games enough to count for anything. Now that I have a GB Player, I hope to get them out and get going in them, once I finish up a couple GCN games. Of those I have played, though, I very, very highly recommend the two Golden Sun titles and Metroid Fusion. F-Zero Maximum velocity ruled, but I didn't play it much because of difficulty seeing. GBA was hard enough for me to see, to begin with, but I tended to move the GBA as I tilted this way and that with the turns, too, adding to visibility issues. I really want to whip it back out soon. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance ruled, too. A real gamer can't go wrong with a Zelda title, either, and Donkey Kong Country (out yet for GBA?) kicked so much nuts.

I just grabbed my GB Player yesterday, along with Golden Sun (which I got new for $19 at Circuit city). That game by itself is worth the $70, IMO. Better than any GC RPG I've seen yet.
That game just sucks you in, especially on a big screen. I stuck it in at like 4:00 PM for the first time, and then I looked up and it was night-time.
I think there should be a section on PGC dedicated to which GBA games translate well to sit-down console games. To me a game like Wario Ware (which was on display) might be a fun diversion on a handheld to pull out while waiting in line, but I can't see myself honestly sitting down to play it for a long stretch.
The GBP is a must own just for the RPGs though. It transforms the Gamecube from having one of the weakest RPG selections on the market to one of the best.

iv been thinkign about these games Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2, Castlevania: Circle of the moon, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Golden Sun one and 2, Metal Gears Solid: Ghost Babel(GBC), Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission(when it comes out), and Pokémon Ruby. Whats really odd is im not really that interesyted in many gamecube games coming out and i think Gameboy player like makes up for it.

How can you not be interested in upcoming games? No F-zero, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, MGS:TTS, FF:CC, Geist, Pikmin 2, 1080 Avalanche, Rougue Squadron 3, Viewtiful Joe, Soul Caliber II, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, or Sonic Heroes?
No, I see what you mean. Recently, my GBA has been getting alot more attention tham my GC, but that's about to change with all the great releases coming out.
For GBA, I reccomendAdvance Wars 2. But be warned, an easy mode would have been welcomed.

Or a movie, for that matter. I can't believe how many people pretend they know stuff about the books, watch the movie, and say that the movie is true to the book. So many lacking things. And even some drastically changed things. I won't tell you what they are. Go read the book and find out. Now.

Here is a list of my favorite GBA games so far;
Advance Wars 2 (very similar to AW1, but better. Reminds me of red alert) Contra Alien Wars (insanely hard old school shooter) MegaMan Zero (very hard but tons of fun) Zelda/4swords F-Zero Bubble Bobble old and new (import) Metroid Fusion All three Castelvanias Golden Sun 1+2 Doom 2 Breath of Fire Tactics Ogre Mario Cart SMA2+3 Tetris Worlds Worms Blast Warioware (fun time waster)
IMO, you can't go wrong with any of these games. I own all of them and love all of them. I'm sure there are plenty of others as well, I'm still working on my collection. I have a Flash advance 256 card so I like to download a lot of cool Japanize games too. You can get pretty much anything off the internet if you know where to look. Now I just need to learn Japanise. Anyway, a gameboy flash card is also great because you can load it up with about 6-7 games at a time and then you don't have to cary the individuial paks around.

I'm going to recommend another absolutely sweet GBA game that no one seems to mention. It's even better on the GBA Player!!
Tomb Raider Prophecy. I bought this one on one of those days when I was bored and looking for "just a game". What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. Great atmosphere. Smooth control (for once...unlike the PSX versions)

My favorite GBA game is Link to the Past. But I'm a Zeldaholic. If that's not your type of game then I think Mega Man Zero is next on my list. (I have a small GBA collection. See for yourself...selves: users.ign.com/collection/Daphnes) The game I'm looking forward to most is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. That's a gem.

phillpot is right. Tactics Ogre is the best current GBA game out in my opinion. and if you want a gba game like FF Tactics or Advance Wars, then get Tactics Ogre without question.
it's better than Advance Wars and allows you to use more units in fights than the original FF Tactics (8 compared to 5).
advance wars is tbs, hitman, ...turn based strategy.
current tbs gba games out: advance wars advance wars 2 tactics ogre
next tbs gba games coming: FF Tactics Advance Onimusha Tactics

Hmm, just to add some missing notes...
-Chu Chu Rocket is another fantastic GBA game. You can no doubt get it for cheap now (well, cheaper). It's one of the best puzzle games I've ever played, and not to mention the one with the most replay value. Essentially, you lay arrows to guide mice to rockets (specifically yours), and away from cats. These cats can be sent to other players rockets to destroy some of their mice, too. Whoever has the most mice...wins. Very simple. Until you add in players trying to screw you over by placing their arrows against you, or someone gets a powerup (which occurs when a special mouse enters your rocket) and mice flood the board, or maybe kittens. Or maybe gold mice (worth 50 mice). The multiplayer (which is single-cartridge) is, by itself, worth the purchase, because it is extremely intense and fun. Also worth noting is puzzle mode, in which you get a limited amount of arrows to get all the mice on screen to the rocket, without a single death. There are thousands of puzzles, and you can also make youjr own! In fact, you can also make your own sprites to replace the chu-chus (the mice). And anything you create, you can also give to other owners of the full game via a link cable. It's one of the best GBA games ever, and certainly worthy of every cent you put into it.
-Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 both include single-cartridge, single-GBA modes. This mode is just as good as having multiple copies of the game, except you have to hand the GBA off. You can even play fog-of-war with this, if you have honest enough friends (though the same can be said for multiple-GBA mode). Advance Wars 2 is, btw, far and away the better game, with many more CO's, though only one new unit does suck.
-Tactics Ogre is a must-have, as is all the Castlevania games and Metroid Fusion.

Hey, I need to find a good GBA game for my mom. She likes platformers and RPG's, but simple and easy games. (She likes PC style RPG games though, like Might and Magic. She doesn't really like Final Fantasy-style games.) I would get Castlevania, but I think it's probably too hard (still might get one for myself though..)

I stayed a month in HK and there were a lot of great GBA games for me to choose. Tales of Symphonia, FF Tactics, SMA4, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword, Lufia, Shining Soul 2, Onimusha Tactics, Boktai, even Viewtiful Joe and FF: Chrystal Chronicles. But they're all in Japanese. That would ruin the experience for me plus I got a lot of (although not infinite) patience so I just bought FE7: The Blazing Sword. Amazing game, great gameplay, loads to unlock with great replay value. It's a bit on the easy side, but once you get to hard mode, you'll be crying like a sissy. Perfect for casual and hardcore gamers. (I hate those 2 words).
If you still don't understand what I'm trying to say... BUY FIRE EMBLEM: THE BLAZING SWORD, YOU IDIOT once it gets released. No, I'm not working for Nintendo, I'm just trying to ensure that future games of this fantastic franchise will reach outside of Japan. Thank you for cooperating.

i would probably not go with tactics ogre- the game itself is good- but it is a very slow moving game- if you really like final fantasy tactics then i would suggest it, but just be warned that it is slow moving and personally i would replace castlevania circle of the moon with castlevania aria of sorrow- aos is my personal favorite castlevania on the gba right now hope this helps

OK, so the Gameboy Advance is the one console I know little to nothing about. I've been reading through this thread and jotted down the names of some titles I've seen over and over again, but the fact remains that I still know little about any of them. I do know there are a crapload of GBA games at Wal-Mart and all the used game stores seem to have them coming out the ears. EB Games has a thing going right now where you can trade in your Xbox for $100 in store credit, so I'm thinking about picking up a GBA-SP.
I thought perhaps I could throw out a list of some of my favorite games and then you could make GBA reccomendations off that? There's so many GBA games out there that it's hard to seperate the good from the bad. I thought perhaps something like this list would give you an insight to my gaming taste.
Favorite Games:
1. Animal Crossing 2. Halo (Yes, I like AC better than HALO...) 3. Roller Coaster Tycoon 4. Descent (1, 2 & 3) 5. Deus Ex: Invisible War 6. Viewtiful Joe 7. Super Smash Brothers Melee 8. Crazy Taxi 9. Morrowind (For about 3 months... Then I got bored)
For those of you puzzled at my list, I just got into gaming in this generation of consoles. I had one of the old chunky gray monochrome "Ghetto Boys" back in the day but growing up my parents thought video games were evil so that's all they let me have. The first real gaming system that ever entered the house was my Xbox. I got a GC for Christmas. I should also point out that I have Metroid Prime, but since I've only played to the middle of the first level I can't judge it yet (I'm too busy fishing in AC ;-]). I don't have a car so I spend a lot of time waiting for people to pick me up.
Any suggestions for me based off this?
EDIT:
I don't want to make my parents look like total morons. I guess I should tack on one other piece of information. Back when I was in kindergarten / first grade the NES had just come out. My mom had a friend who got one, and it literally took over the entire family. These people's entire world revolved around the video game system. If you walked into the room and coughed, and five minutes later they died they would scream at you for "making them lose their guy"... It was horrible. My parents kind of got a bad impression because of that. The idea behind giving me the original Game Boy was that they could easily take it away and hide it if things got out of hand.

Thanks.

I've been thinking of picking up a Castelvania game for the SP (it would be my 1st Castlevania game), but don't know which one to get. So far I know that the most recent one is very short, but if it has good replay value that might make up for it. Anyway, which Castlevania game would you recommend? Thanks.

aria of sorrow is by far the best. great level design, lots of customization, and really good replay value. circle of the moon is good, but i found the card system a little confusing and overly cumbersome. plus you'll have a hard time finding it anywhere. and i'd like to forget harmony of dissonance was ever made.

I just got Super Puzzle Fighter today and it's great! It's very challenging on the harder difficulty levels and there is an element of luck needed. Very addictive and fun.

Is there a good shoot'em'up for the GBA? Preferrably one of the one-hit-dead-bullet-hell games. I grabbed Iridion II, but it's the exact opposite of how I like my games.

A remake of R-type 3 is being made. Should come out sometime this year.
Has anyone tried Gradius Galaxies?

Super Puzzle Fighter on GBA is really identical to it's PS1 counterpart, which ofcourse means it's one of the best games ever, my favorite puzzle game ever, and one of the few gba games I still own.
I was wondering if anyone here has/played, Double Dragon Advance, Lunar Legend, or Blackthorne, and what their impressions are of each...
is lunar legend's combat system too simple and "old" like?

How 'bout Final Fantasy Tactisc advance?? . if u ff fans i think it's worth. My suggestion is: for 3D realistic gaming use GC for GBA game (which lot's of fun 2D RPG) use GBA I haven't tried GBP. I think GBP it's only make u'r GC become SNES console, but still have fun with it. Depends on u, but for me, it's kinda irritating . BTW Does the graphic improved or stretch when using GBP? (I've haven't tried) Does the sound improved ?, because it's silly when u played goldensun with funny sound (when characters had dialog) and repetitive music on u'r TV with GC.

I was told by 2 EB employee's that Double Dragon is incredibly hard. I think its mainly from the old beat em ups skills being rusty. I recently got Super Double Dragon, a game that I used to fly through very quickly, and I kept dying.

Quote Which game is better Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, please explain pros and cons for each game, thanks
~ Final Fantasy Tactics Advance ~
Pros: ~ Cool Isometric graphics. ~ Lots of non-linear missions. ~ Comfortably fast battling (just a quick note: this was my only gripe with Tactics Ogre, it was too slow) ~ Quite a few classes
Cons: ~ Story is trite and contrived. ~ Battles are extremely easy. Didn't die once. ~ Judge system is aggrivating, and totally gimmicky. ~ Many classes have re-hashed abilities. And most of the unique abilities are down-right useless.
This was probably my most disappointing game of the year. It felt incomplete. The story was bad, and the gameplay required little streategy. All in all it was a good game, but didn't stack up against its competition (or its predecessor).
~ Fire Emblem ~
Pros: ~ Great Story ~ Awesome classes. ~ Outstanding Battle Animations ~ Character support system that furthers character relationships. Really makes all the characters memorable. (Not to mention you get stat boosts when near supporting chars) ~ Battling is as fast or slow as you like. ~ Gameplay is challenging and requires much more fore-thought than FFTA ~ Character promotion is really satisfying (even though a character can only be promoted once)
Cons: ~ Map graphics are a bit flat. ~ Limited inventory space can be inconvenient (if you forget to make room before battles) ~ Weapons break. This isn't that bad but I was always hording the expensive weapons (of course I finished the game with a mess of unspent money... Doh!) ~ Difficult to level up healer classes.
I really love this game, the story is great, the character development is top-notch, and the battles are great fun. I plan on playing it again very soon. I'm also hoping that the older games make it to the US in some form, and I'm REALLY hoping we see a Fire Emblem on GC.

It's a strategy RPG, which means there is no exploring like in many RPGs, only battling. I highly recommend FE though.

Ive heard the game is alot like Advance Wars. How and how is it not like AW? How is it better or worse than AW?

Yes Ive played them both and I must say that I found Fire Emblem to be the better of the 2.
It is a really hard game and is better than AW because all your charecters are different. BUY IT.
Now my querie. Should I buy Mario and Luigi? I want it but if I were to buy it then it would be over Prime. ShoulD I get it.

Most GBA games are garbage, the drawback to making games so easy to design on a system. Its so easy for third party companies to slap together crap games that I don't often throw away 30 bucks on poo.

Post by: KDR_11k on June 01, 2004, 08:35:00 AM
Let's extend that: Most games are garbage. The GBA's crap ratio isn't that much higher than that of the other systems, but of course it gets a lot of movie games, which are pretty easy to avoid.

I was wondering.. does anyone have Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon and also played the SEGA Genesis Shining Force? I really liked the SEGA Genesis Shining Force games and I'd love to have a GBA game to take on the go but what I'm trying to find out is if the game is on par with the original Shining Force (the one it was remade from) or if it's been butchered, toned down and/or changed in a way to make the game not worth it to a fan of the original. I know the artwork is different and I've read some about a few new characters and a "card" battle system... but otherwise I've no idea how it compares to the original.
I've read a few reviews but they mostly seem to not compare the game to the original or compare it to other more popular Strategy RPGs (i.e. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance). I don't care if the game doesn't have a whole bunch of new features added to make it on par with modern day SRPGs, I just want to know if it retains the same spirit of the original Shining Force.

Fire Emblem: I'm still playing it. It never gets old. You actually grow attached to some characters, like Rebecca, for instance. Oh, and Oswin.
AW2: I'm still playing it. It never gets old. You have no attachment to the units. You send them forth to be destroyed, just to build another one next turn.
Mario & Luigi: I'm still playing it. It never gets old. I like Luigi best. Heh heh.
All three are top quality games. You can't go wrong. Save up 90 bucks and get them all the same day. Your nourished soul will kiss you.

Well, I went ahead and got the game anyway so I mind as well answer my own question here. So far everything seems good to the original - music is a bit remixed but the game pretty much plays the same with enhancements being neutral or positive for the most part. I haven't figured out how to use the character cards yet but whatever their use is, it doesn't seem to affect the regular battle system.

While contemplating picking up FFoS, I came to realize that I completely skipped over Golden Sun and its sequel. Are these games (I'm especially wary of the first one as it's a first gen game) worth picking up today, or have better RPG's come out since? And if i skip straight into the second one, will I be at a disadvantage because of the transfer feature?
I've already beat M&L:SS, Advance Wars (I skipped the second one), FFTA and Fire Emblem. I'm looking for more of a traditional RPG as opposed to a strategy game. Any suggestions?

Golden Sun is one of the few turn-based RPGs I actually enjoy...The Djinn system is rather cool, and the story is the best I've ever personally seen in a videogame...So don't skip the first game or you'll be missing out...

If you get GS 1 and 2 for the price of one game, get it, any more and it's not worth it. The two games are in fact one game split in half. I'd go as far as saying they should release a game that consists of GS 1 and 2 merged into one game (with a seamless transition). Of course, the game is nice while it lasts but it ends about 20 hours too early (half way through). Me? I'm boycotting The Lost Age because I feel that GS1 was a ripoff and I shouldn't encourage this behaviour in any way.

First off, I'm a complete Pokemon virgin. I've never played a single game, and my knowledge is limited to once you start playing, you feel the inexplicable need to "catch 'em all". That being said, I need to get my eight year old cousin something for Christmas. I know he has a Gameboy Color, but he doesn't have a GBA, nor do his parents plan on buying him one for Christmas. I know he's into Yu-Gi-Oh (or at least he used to be) and I think he used to play the game (rather than just collect the cards) so I believe he has at least some knowledge of a card battle system
First off, I know the series is meant for younger players, but is it simple enough for the mind of an eight year old to grasp? Second, which would be the best to start off with--Gold, Silver, or Crystal? If I remember correctly, Crystal is a combination of Gold and Silver, but I'm not sure if it has a harsher learning curve.
Thanks for any and all help.
