Title: Splatoon Release Window, Modes Revealed
Post by: Steel Diver on June 20, 2014, 05:21:16 AM

You will be able to Splatoon by yourself or with a friend.

Splatoon will have single-player and multiplayer modes, according to an interview with the game's project lead, Tsubasa Sakaguchi, and Producer Hisashi Nogami. Additionally, the game will be coming out in the first half of 2015 as a full retail product.

In regards to this revelation, Nogami stated the following:

“First of all, our plan is to release this as a full retail packaged software in 2015… the first half of 2015. And because we’re releasing this as a full software title, we of course plan to include a single-player mode but then also a one-on-one multiplayer mode that can be played without connecting to the Internet.”

The one-on-one multiplayer will be controlled using one GamePad and one Pro Controller, though how this will work is currently unknown.

I wonder if the single player mode will have wacky enemies like most Nintendo games. Shooters often have campaigns filled with the same character you see in the multiplayer.

This could work way better with dual GamePad support. Having different controllers for 1v1 local multiplayer either puts the player with the Pro Controller at a disadvantage or negates any useful features of the GamePad by having to change controller schemes to make it fair.

Wasn't it Miyamoto who said that there weren't any good uses for 2 gamepads, so Nintendo wasn't focused on it?  Because that's a damn good one.

Miyamoto just said that they could technically allow 2 GamePads right now, but don't think they could expect people to buy a second GamePad right now and are trying to just sell as many systems as they can.

They could always pack it in with a game like they did with the Wii Remote last gen.

It's going to be really interesting to see what the single player for this is like.

Any game that makes use of 1 GamePad effectively, but also has the option for a 2nd player that could also use features exclusive to the GamePad is a good argument for needing a 2nd GamePad.

Splatoon 1vs1 or any combination where there are 2 teams locally (upto 3vs3) could use dual GamePads.
Madden and FIFA is another good example of games that 2 GamePads could be the defining factor in setting the game apart from the rest.

and yes, packing it in w/ a game at a premium price (WiiFit w/ balance board) would obviously work if the game was compelling enough that people need to try it. The price would not hold them back.... but i can see how Nintendo is hesitant seeing how they can't even move the Wii U itself.

I stand corrected.

True, and I don't think Splatoon is the right game for that pack in, being a new IP and all.

Let's be honest.  From what we've seen so far I don't think there is enough to this game to really justify Retail let alone the cost of an additional Gamepad.

I'm not even suggesting that this is the have to sell that 2nd game pad, and not over to pack it in with, but one that would definitely benefit from it.

I can't even imagine what the game that sold the general populace the need for the GamePad would be.
It would be an easier sale if they had planned for it from launch with the first Madden game and 2 player local CoD and Ghost Recon. Maybe a 2 player 3rd person co-op Resident Evil, or a team sniper scope game or something.
Point being it wouldn't be so trivial had Nintendo launched the feature in mind, even if they didn't have an internal game to push it with.

I just realized that auto-correct on whatever I was typing on really fucked up my post.

I can't even imagine what the game that sold the general populace on the need for the GamePad would be, but it would need to be the WiiPlay, WiiFit, WiiSports of this generation.
It would be an easier sale if they had planned for it from launch with the first Madden/FIFA game and 2 player local CoD and Ghost Recon. Maybe a 2 player 3rd person co-op Resident Evil, or a team sniper scope game or something.

It would also be nice if that Tiger Woods game ever came out that used the GamePad and the Wiimote. That might sell some on the GP in the first place. I really think it would be an easier sell to sell 2 GP's than it has been so far to sell one. The competitive advantage to two local players having a private screen that the other player can't see just opens up so many possibilities. Can't believe they didn't even think of it till it was mentioned to them....

But back on topic. Yes Splatoon looks like an insanely good time. I really hope they can flesh it out into a full retail experience and not a one-trick online multi experience.

Single player will probably be repetitive and poorly done. I could be wrong and looking at it the wrong way, but that is just my opinion.

1v1 MP never clicked with me in any sort of shooter.

The online MP will probably be where the major appeal of this title is.

Single player in shooters can be fun when done right, I loved single player in TimeSplitters 2.

What I really need is 2-player co-op vs. Bots!

2-player co-op vs. ONLINE! We need more games that can pull this off.
