Nintendo announced a new Wii U game titled Splatoon during the E3 Digital Event. It’s an 8-player, 4-on-4 online action game which features paintgun-like battles played from a third-person perspective.

Players take control of characters who can switch forms from human to squid and back again. In human form, they can shoot out ink to cover the environment, and they can move quickly through their own ink when in squid form. Victory is determined based on which squad covered the most map area in their ink. The game makes full use of the Wii U gamepad, mapping the arena’s ink coverage in real time and allowing for quick movement to teammates by tapping on their player icons. The gyro sensor is also employed in some capacity.

Splatoon is scheduled for a 2015 release. We’ll be uncovering more details as E3 unfolds, so check back with us for more info.

I'm hoping I can play with my Son.  He'll probably enjoy this.

It's The Kids Next Door meets THQ's De Blob to create Nintendo's version of (I'm gonna copy/paste the term) "Calamari of Duty".
