Super Mario 3D World creators, including directors Koichi Hayashida and Kenta Motokura, and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, conversed with Edge Online on the making of the 2013 Wii U title.

The concept for 3D Land and 3D World was conceived after completion of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo EAD Tokyo wanted to create an entirely new game, as they were tasked with creating the perfect medley of the classic 2D platforming style with the bigger, open world entries.

The feature covers a number of delightful tidbits, including the fact the Double Cherry power-up was in fact an accident. One of the level designers erroneously added an extra character model on a level--a mistake turned marvel. Also discussed was how the Super Bell (cat power-up) came about. With looking for more exciting ways to run around the courses and the director's desire of allowing Mario to climb walls, a cat-like suit just made sense.

New additions don't stop at power-ups either. During development, over 100 staff members were asked to brainstorm. Ideas ranging from simple gimmicks to level concepts were spawned, leading to the studio's walls covered in Post-it notes. This seems to reflect Koizumi's opinion, as he said "We do feel a need to keep delivering games that will surpass our audience’s expectations. As creators, we try to fill our games with as many unique elements as possible. Moving into the future, we want to continue to deliver even more surprises as fast as we can so that it never feels like there aren’t enough.”
