Title: Watch Dogs Might Hit Wii U in 2014
Post by: Br26 on March 06, 2014, 05:01:39 PM

The Wii U version hit technical setbacks delaying it past the other versions.

Watch Dogs for Wii U is still in development and is slated for a possible release in 2014. It is being delayed past the other versions, which are due out in late May, because of some technical issues and a desire for using the GamePad effectively.

Watch Dogs is still in development at Ubisoft Romania, according Senior Producer Dominic Guay in a Polygon interview. The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal on other platforms.

"Yeah it's still alive," Guay said. "We still haven't defined a ship date for it, though. So it's on hold, to a certain extent for shipping."

Guay cited that one of the reasons for delaying the game's release date was due to the game having problems running on the Wii U hardware. The studio in Romania is also still working on ways to incorporate the GamePad into the experience.

A 2014 ship date is still a possibility, though Guay wouldn't confirm it. Watch Dogs was previously announced for a November 2013 release on Wii U before it was delayed with the other versions to spring 2014, and then delayed again.

Honestly, Just cancel it.  Releasing it after I can get the other version easily for $20 on Steam then charging full price probably without the DLC.  Not worth the effort.

Who knows, I feel like they may throw us a bone here.

Based on the down-spec-ing outcry and the general dev hell feel around this game, I could see this being a case where the semi-forgotten WiiU release launches eight months later and is objectively the best version (outside of some missing shaders from the PS4/PC apex) and the underdog Ubi Romania team gets to quietly savor that even though no one notices.

Well let's hope for a GotY edition, but if this game released and doesn't put up anywhere near decent numbers, then that's pretty much a wrap for 3rd party support that isn't CoD, platformers, movie tie ins, Just Dance, indie games and shovelware.

Sadly, I agree with this.

Agreed. Not many people are going to buy it anyway, much less a delayed version...

Even if this happens, I'm still playing Watch Dogs on Steam via Wii U Pro Controller. Jokes on you, Ubisoft! :P

Wait, I can use a Wii U Pro controller with Steam Games?

what do I need to make this happen?
I needed a reason to go buy a console controller to use for the PC, and I thought I was gonna have to go get a XboxOne controller, and not have a secondary use for it.

So give me the full laundry list please.

This is the bluetooth adapter I use for my Pro. Works like a charm, and it allows for not only the standard PC X-Input for controllers, but also D-Input for everything else! It's brilliant, actually. I play FFXIV:ARR using this, and I love it. I started Bioshock (on Steam) several weeks ago, and it's fantastic playing these games using a Nintendo controller.

Highly recommend, BnM!

Too bad they do not have anything like that for the Xbox One and PS4 controllers.

The XBone is just when MS can start mass making them reasonably.  Developers have had them for a very long time.

Watch Dogs will probably be the last Wii U third party game. If Arkham Knight is any indication then this year's Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed will skip the Wii U, 360 and PS3. The Wii U's success is now up to Nintendo.

It wasn't already?

There's two things I would surmise here:

1) Ubisoft is yanking people around to get them to preorder the WiiU version so they can be canaries in the coal mine, and this will actually help sales of the WiiU version (I'm in this camp)
2) If Nintendo doesn't have a written contract with Ubi that Watch Dogs has to come out on WiiU in some form by the end of the fiscal year, they're even bigger fools than we thought.

Why would Ubisoft agree to such a magical rainbow unicorns make-believe contract?

Also, when did Nintendo sue Sega for breach of marshmallow cotton candy unicorn contract when Aliens Colonial Marines was cancelled?

I didn't say had, I said they would be fools not to.

I'm well aware that such a contract would be unprecedented. And if there was a contract in place for Colonial Marines, they probably took one look at that and said "Nah, we're good" back when the third party situation was "typical Nintendo" instead of "historically awful".

This isn't the co-marketing money the big 6 western publishers (Activision, Ubi, Take 2, Warner, EA and Bethesda in order of market share) have relied on for more than a generation. At this point, Nintendo may wish the addicts weaned themselves off, but they clearly haven't. So they're going to have to pay up and demand a hard time limit.

tl;dr: If/when Watch Dogs comes out, Nintendo will have paid for it. Big time.
