Title: Retailers clearing Wii U stock (massive price cuts)
Post by: tendoboy1984 on September 25, 2013, 11:45:57 PM
Is the Wii U being discontinued? :(
GoNintendo keeps posting articles about UK retailers discounting the Wii U to clear stock, and some of them have reduced their Nintendo inventory in favor of the Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

It is so unlike Nintendo to abandon their home console this early. It hasn't even been a full year yet. The GameCube sold much worse, but Nintendo kept pushing on. They didn't even let the Virtual Boy phase them.
The Wii U is the perfect console to attract both casual and mainstream gamers, so why does no one like it? Is it because of the hardware power? Plenty of "underpowered" consoles sold well and got developer support.
Everyone assumes the Xbox One and PS4 will do well because they have tons of preorders, but launch sales never determine the console "winner". Plus plenty of people don't want to spend $400-$500 on a game system.

I can't tell if this is a troll thread. No, Wii U is not being discontinued. Nintendo has a big holiday season wth some major titles finally coming. They just dropped the price of the Deluxe Set and released the Wind Waker bundle. Wii U isn't going anywhere. 2014 is an even bigger year with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. If anything, stores are trying to clear out stock of the Basic Set. I think it's working because I haven't seen any in my area for quite a while now.

Have you been reading GoNintendo lately? There are plenty of articles detailing how retailers in the UK are clearing shelf space for Nintendo titles in favor of Xbox and PlayStation products.

Yep, in Europe, France and Germany are Nintendo's biggest markets by far. Worrying about the Wii U being discontinued because of the UK would be like worrying the 360 was going to be discontinued years ago because of Japan.

If Nintendo was to discontinue the Wii U, now would make no sense unless they were just hemorrhaging money. They're going to quit this close to the Christmas season and miss those potential sales? With Christmas and Mario and DK dropping around that time things could potentially turn the corner.

What you should read into this: now might be a good time to buy a Wii U console if you can find a nearby retailer doing a deep discount. I bought in at $200 figuring that would be a decent price.
First party games are coming - some this holiday, others still further out. But they are coming and when they do the consoles will move. Third party games are a mixed bag, but on a Nintendo console that shouldn't be a surprise.
Think about 3DS now versus one year into it's lifespan. Where are all the cries about doom and gloom for that system? Wii U might not have the same turn-around... but it's also not going to fold up shop.

The other day 3DS just topped Wii's lifetime sales in Japan. Granted, Wii is still out, but it's not catching up at this point.
I'm not worried about Wii U as a console. Nintendo knows how to be Nintendo and that alone will keep the console afloat for the duration of the generation. This is a blessing and a curse. If you're looking for anything beyond strong first party titles, you're barking up the wrong console. That's where frustration sets in with a lot of people. I wish I could buy one console for all my gaming wants, but I didn't buy Wii U without knowing what I was getting into. Between Wii U and 3DS, I have too many games on my plate this holiday season.
