Title: I just joked about an idea... and I'm sure someone is working on it...
Post by: sweetfeathery on August 08, 2013, 08:38:52 PM
What if watching tv programs through xbox live or playstation network gave you tv achievements or badges? What if I sit through a season of Breaking Bad or The Simpsons and get "rewards"? How I already hate this idea but think were going to see it within the next 2 to 5 years.

At least that should still work if you said "McDonald's sucks!" or "**** McDonald's!"
That'll probably just alert the NSA to come to your house. Anyone who would say "McDonald's sucks!" is quite obviously an Un-American terrorist.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft have already confirmed TV achievements. Watching Indie Game: The Movie on Steam nets you not only achievement but Steam trading cards too. These are dark times we live in.

The McDonalds ad thing has a problem with it (aside from the obvious "holy **** this suck!" part of it) that all ads have. I go to McDonalds a lot. They don't have to advertise to me and even if they feel they do it must be working because I'm constantly there. But commercials don't know if you have already bought the product and harass you nonetheless. So I'll be watching TV and get bombarded by McDonalds ads and it's 8pm and I already had dinner and had it at McDonalds! I bought your damn product so why are you still bugging me?
So in the patent where I have to shout "McDonalds" at likely every commercial break, McDonalds is harassing me when I'm already their customer! Even from an incredibly selfish position where McDonalds should feel that everyone that fails to give them business should be harassed until they do, the harassment does not stop even if you comply. No matter how much money you give McDonalds they would continue to make you say "McDonalds" like a trained chimp to get back to your TV show or videogame. Non-customers and customers are both punished. Existence seems to be the crime one commits against McDonalds. So there is no reason to comply and there is the flaw. If I get harassed the same regardless of whether I bought the product or not then the logical course of action is to not comply.
Unless, like me, you just like McDonalds food in which case there is no reason for them to harass you in the first place. If anything it will drive an existing customer away.

There are certain things that don't need to be advertised. McDonald's is one of them (they could cut their ad department and pay their employees a living wage without increasing prices and keeping their profits), milk is another one (who isn't aware of milk?).

I think the only time McDonalds needs to advertise is when it has some new menu item or a temporary promotion like the Monopoly game. Even then it's more to inform people about new stuff as opposed to convincing people that this McDonalds restaurant might be worth checking out.
Plus you figure having a giant golden arches sign at each restaurant on every major route in every town in America and Canada would be advertising enough. You basically can't drive anywhere on the Interstate without seeing the McDonalds logo at least once.

I don't think all advertising is about informing you of a product, some of it is about getting something on your mind and making you want it. Everyone knows what McDonald's is and everyone recognizes CocaCola, but showing you hamburgers and fries or pouring out a Coke in front of you gets you to think about it and start craving it. Of course, Ian Sane has a point about seeing a McDonald's commercial after he's already had it, but that's more a matter of timing adverts well than adverts themselves.
Plus, companies spend millions researching the effectiveness of adverts, and if they didn't actually help their business/profits then I'd think they'd figure it out.
