Title: 3DS System Update for StreetPass Relay Available
Post by: King Bowser Koopa on August 05, 2013, 11:05:43 PM

Update your handheld now!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35098

The Nintendo 3DS software version 6.2.0-12U is now available for download within the United States.

This update adds the previously announced StreetPass relay functionality to the device, which temporarily stores a player's StreetPass data at any Nintendo Zone the player connects to, and passes it on to the next person to connect to that location.

The added Nintendo Zone support is described in further detail on Nintendo's website:

StreetPass relay points are located at Nintendo Zones all across the country. When a Nintendo 3DS user gets near a StreetPass relay point, it automatically stores his or her StreetPass data temporarily and then passes it on to the next Nintendo 3DS user to pass by the same relay point.

StreetPass relay points temporarily store StreetPass data for various games each time a Nintendo 3DS user passes by. This means you can get StreetPass data for several games at once.

Notes:

The update also contains the standard "further improvements to system stability and usability" that each of the previous updates have included.

I don't want to download this sissy Streetpass garbage! Living out here and rural area makes Streetpasses more special when they happen.

How do you get the Nintendo Zones to work. Every time I go to McDonalds my 3DS says I've entered a Nintendo Zone, but when I click the Nintendo Zone Icon it just thinks for about 5 minutes and then gives me an error. What all are they supposed to do?

This is great.  It will be interesting to see if the techniques used to extend the NintendoZone to home networks can be made to work for this, in spite of what Nintendo says.  I can't imagine they shipped any kind of hardware to these thousands of locations.  Even if not this is a better use NintendoZone locations since the app, as seen in the above comments, can apparently be hard to figure out.

I heard about this last night, but I was already tucked into bed and was too lazy to get the update. Not that it matters since I rarely have Wi-Fi turned on. It's a waste of battery due to all the people I'm not StreetPassing. I understand the concept of the relay points, but I'm rarely ever near one.

The Nintendo Zone is just a crappy Internet Portal with Nintendo trivia, some eShop demos and random sports stuff. It's absolutely confusing and this new Relay system is the only thing of value it actually has ever had. Nintendo Zone is slower than dial up and will crap out on you all of the time. Nintendo should kill it and just keep the Relay system perhaps. I hope it works, I'll be sure to test it out in a few locations I think would be good for Street Pass tags.

While I agree that the Nintendo Zone app is a joke, the quality of the connection depends on the location's connect that you're using.

Anyway, I tried to make this work last night with my pocket Nintendo Zone (a.k.a. my cell phone) and had no luck. :(

This has been my experience too. It doesn't sound like we are missing much though.

I take it back - it WORKED!

Last night, I turned the wireless off one unit and let another unit sit, connected, to my cell.  Then, I turned off the second unit and turned the first back on.  Nothing happened.

This morning, with the second unit's wireless still off, I had to turn on my cell's WiFi hotspot again.  Whatta know, the green light lit up on my first 3DS!

SO, basically, it works and you need nothing special.

Wait, you can turn your Cell Phone into a Nintendo Zone? How do you do that? Can I turn my home computer/wifi network into a Nintendo Zone?
