Title: Six Game Boy Mega Man Titles Coming to 3DS Virtual Console
Post by: NWR_Neal on July 18, 2013, 05:13:28 PM

Get Xtreme and blow up some Stardroids in these Game Boy and Game Boy Color Mega Man games.

Six more Mega Man games are coming to the 3DS Virtual Console soon. The first four are the Game Boy versions of Mega Man II, III, IV, and V. The other two are Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2, both of which pull from Mega Man's SNES entries.

The four Game Boy titles are peculiar remixed titles that pull in mechanics and features from the NES games. In addition, they add some off-the-wall stuff such as Stardroids (the replacement for Robot Masters in MMV) and the Mega Arm projectile shot.

The first Mega Man Xtreme pulled bosses and elements from Mega Man X and X2, while the sequel pulled from X3 and X4. Since Xtreme 2 was a late Game Boy Color release (2001), it quickly became very hard to find, and was also well-received.

No word on when these games will start coming out, but given Capcom's previous consistency with the NES games on 3DS Virtual Console, the releases should be constant once they begin.

Wait, didn't Capcom cancel the GBA version of Mega Man Anniversary Collection because they said they lost the code to the GB games?

Well the GBA version would have been a port so they would have liked to have the source code to work from.

VC is emulation so it just needs a ROM which anyone could find online or rip off of an old cartridge.  There is no coding required.

Why can't Virtual Console be a universal Nintendo thing?

why does there need to be a separate one for Wii, 3DS & Wii U?
it's a rhetorical question I felt the need to put in writing. no one has to bother answering it.

are you on club nintendo? I recently caught up with some surveys (dammit some expired!) and decided I'm going to rag on the VC every chance I get.

Worth a shot, right?

Ah, I remember the sheer brutality of MM1 on the GB. The main problem was that the screen was so small so they reduced Mega Man's jump height to two blocks (his standing height) which makes jumping over anything your own size very difficult. I later played an NES MM and was surprised how damn easy it was in comparison.

As far as source code I'm not sure that would really help with a port anyway since we're talking about an ancient system here, the most you could gleam from that is enemy logic but reusing any code is likely impossible. Ripping the graphical and sound assets from a cartridge would get you most of the reusable material.

Because Nintendo figures if they have three VCs they can probably sell some games three times to the same person.

Excited for IV/V and the Xtreme games.

Capcom needs to do a similar roundup for Wii U VC this fall (MM5-7, MMX2-3, & Bass, Soccer).
