Title: Game Cube will have online gaming in 2003-2004?
Post by: ShadowRunner on June 08, 2003, 05:34:45 AM
Sorry if i'm not allowed to post this here but this is the biggest news for a long time and no sites talk about it. Gamespy president has been interviewed (see gamespy.com) and Nintendo is working with Gamespy to bring online gaming to the Game Cube. Apparently it will be up to publishers to charge for online games, but chance are good that Nintendo will not charge it? Great no?

not really news if its not going to be implemented in a big way, the tools are there its just upto devs to use them, and there isn't really a big incentive for them todo so given most cube owners arn't interested in online gameing (or so it would apear)

its also kinda old and was reported by PGC a while ago

Incentives could be made if games like Mario Kart or Mario Party were online to launch the Gamecube online network.

Still, though, nice to see Nintendo making some movement for online gaming.

I think they (Nintendo) might release DX versions of games. (SSB, Mario Kart, Gold, Tennis etc...)

I dont think Nintendo really has much of an online strategy. It would have been great if FF:CC was goin to be online, but instead Ninetndo chose that stupid GBA idea. None of my friends have a GBA, and I dont have a GBA. Nintendo doesnt have many games that would be fun to play over the net. Someone will probably say Mario Kart, ok big whoop what else? The PS2 is just dominating the internet. SOCOM is excellent, along with Midnight Club 2. Nintendo needs to step up and stop bsing around with this crappy titles they have been releasing.

It was Square's call to make it GBA conntection compatible. And when this game began developement there wasn't a internet plan.

"Nintendo doesnt have many games that would be fun to play over the net."

????

Nintendo has a ton of games they could put online.
Smash Bros.
Wave Race
Mario Kart
1080
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Pokemon
Animal Crossing
etc.

If Nintendo wanted to, they could have the best online games.

some people seem to think a game has to be CS, racing, or MMORPG to be good online

Did I say that? No.

"Nintendo has a ton of games they could put online."
Smash Bros. - 4ppl lagfest, yet it would be awesome
Wave Race -  I guess it would be fun, but its not happening
Mario Kart - definetly not going to happen
1080 - zzzzzz
Mario Golf - WOO 18 holes of golf! Lets take turns and watch everyones swing!
Mario Tennis - Now this I'd love to see, yet again NOT HAPPENING
Pokemon -   Has to be a MMORPG where you go and collect the Pokemon, not some stupid picture taking game.
Animal Crossing - Live in a town with 1000's of other people? I can do th at offline.

Im sure it wasnt entirely Squares call. Its not like Square are the ones so fascinated about that stupid connectivity, its Nintendo who hope to solve all their problems with their connectivity.

just becuse it isn't happening doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun online, and why would SSB:M be a lagfest? especially if they had a narrowband option of no items. any of those games posted would be awsome fun, i can think of more too

also i thought that microsawft was owning online with xbawx live?

booo hisss @ nitendokid booooo ;P

Xbox doesnt really have any cool online games. IMO the ps2 is awesome. Socom is just great, the head sets, the war theme, the graphics, every aspect of the game is excellent. And the thing about Sony is, is that they wont release one great online game, they will keep them coming so fast. Nintendo has one excellent game every few months, then their 3rd party games. It sort of pisses me off because Nintendo has the talent, but doesnt use it, and sometimes when they do use it...we end up getting games like Pokemon Snap. Piac your room is crappy, i dont know why but it makes me laugh to say that haahah.

i liked pokemon snap, admitedly it wasn't a great game, or even a good game, but it held my attention for the period of the rental (was clearly a cash-in game though) why are you bringing up pokemon snap though... thats about the only bad videogame using the pokemon licence.. AND what does that have todo with online gameing?

If Super Monkey Ball 3 or 4 have online capability (Not likely Monkey Ball 3), then it will simply take over the world

Very easy to critisize, but its the truth. Do you think we will see this games for playing online? Better yet, do you think GC will even go online?

Well the Gamecube does go online, albeit with only one title but it is still online you that one yes is a fact. (And basically both are correct.)

Will we see wide support for it from Nintendo, no. I stand by the belief that they will just be content to shower us with DX games.

Making a game with GBA connection isn't a prerequisite for the Q fund, the only prereq I know of is that it has to be a fresh game idea and the old man has to like it.

To take your GameCube online, happily place it in front of your keyboard when you surph da Net.  It'll be happy you took it online with you.

Hell, give it its own instant messenger account.

Sarcasm.....its great.

I forgot to explain why I actually wouldn't want online. People think that an online feature can be added instantly, well that's half true. You can add an online feature very quickly, but for sure it will lag horribly. To make a game online is a long procedure, you have to account for packet loss, slower ping times, and much more. If you don't account for those, you'll have something like Halo, if you've ever played it through a tunneling system. For that reason alone is why I want games NOT to be online, unless the game is strickly made for online. I would rather have a great multiplayer made quick (without the time wasted on online) and with a LAN feature (LAN is always always lag free so you can add it instantly and don't have to account for anything), than a game that comes out a year later that is by that time good/mediocre compared to others and has an online feature that you might have to pay for.

Not to mention sometimes you have to tone down the graphics.

Edit: Forgive me, this was a double post.

The extra development time is one of the reasons I believe we will see few if any original internet enabled games for the Gamecube. The only game on the horizon that has any chance of making it online is Animal Crossing which is doubtful because of the SD function they have in the works for the game.

People crack me up about the online thing.

You do realize it costs a few million just to set up a usable network, and then several million to keep it going?  That's not including employees to train and watch over it, software development, programming, tech support, and any other thousand things that go into online gaming.

Sony might have a good online presence, but they are losing millions every year on it.  300K users isn't going to cut it, unless they charged 20 bucks a month.  Same thing with Xbox.  Their userbases seem high because they are the first consoles to go out on a limb online.  But I gaurantee you they are losing an insane amount of money on the deal.

Oh, and you highlight SOCOM as a good title?  Yea, beacuse we haven't had enough war themed FPS games around that you can play online lately.  Oh, and there certainly isn't voice support for them.  And they CERTAINLY don't focus on team-based tactics.

No, I've never heard of such a novel idea before in my LIFE!  Golly!  Sony sure is smart!  They didn't rip off 21093821093 games before them at all!  They came up with a totally new and original idea!  WOW!

As far as arguing Nintendo's online capabilities, Animal Crossing, F Zero, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and Soul Calibur would probably cause me to die of happiness instantly.  You're whining about lag in Smash Bros when it doesn't even exist yet?  Smart argument.  "Kid" indeed.

There was talk of Zelda online for a while, and I dunno how that would pan out but it would certainly be interesting.  The new Zelda games would be perfect for this, but I wouldn't mind seeing a full on MMORPG.  Same with other titles - what would stop them from using GBA games in the online?  Advance Wars online perhaps?

I'm hearing a lot of fluff and not a lot of logic from some parts of this thread.

We will see online gaming on the Cube soon, Q4 or Q1 2004.  For the simple fact that Nintendo has to have an online system set up before the release of the new Cube.

Connectivity is a cute idea, but it will not sell consoles.
