Title: Date, Retail Release, and More Revealed for New Super Luigi U
Post by: CurtDogg on May 17, 2013, 10:36:02 AM

Nabbit is playable. That's something?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34215

New Super Luigi U will release on the Wii U eShop in North America and Europe on June 20, and June 19 in Japan. It will sell for $19.99 and 2,100 yen respectively. A physical version of the game will also be released across all regions starting in Japan on July 13 for 3,885 yen, July 26 in Europe, and August 25 in North America for $29.99.

The game also features Nabbit as a playable character. Nabbit, who was one of the antagonists of New Super Mario Bros. U, will play similarly to Luigi but cannot use power-ups, nor will he take damage from enemies.

$20? Great. Very reasonable.

I really love the direction they have gone with DLC. Significant content for those who want more, without gimping the main experience, and reasonably priced. And now physical standalone copies? Love the move, even if I'm a download fiend.

I wonder if the retail version is to give the illusion of the Wii U having more games on the shelf.  The store shelf is a minor marketing tool.  If people are walking through the store and they see a barren Wii U shelf they figure the system has nothing going for it.  This just puts some extra item on the shelf so the Wii U looks like it has a few more games.

I'll probably wait for the retail version to drop in price.

Who would be crazy enough to pay more for a physical version of the game two months after the DLC that's ten dollar cheaper?

*I WOOOOOOOOOOOOOULD!* /jazzhands

I totally dig that green box.

It's nice that they're also offering it at retail, I certainly wasn't expecting that. I'll definitely buy it now. I hope they do this with future major DLC as well.

I think it sets a great precedent that Nintendo's charging more for the physical copy than the eShop version. We need to see more of that.

By the way, did they mention whether or not you need NSMBU if you buy the retail version?

The retail version is stand alone.

That goes against Nintendo's new policy of under-shipping games so you have to buy the digital version.  They should still make more $ off the digital copy off of the game.  And like the last few releases, you'll probably have to buy online to find a copy of the physical version.

$30 for New Super Mario Bros. U and the Expansion pack New Super Luigi Bros. U is a good deal. $20/30 for just a dlc pack that's barely above a ROM hack isn't.

I'm glad for the physical copy, simply because:
1) Nintendo in Europe sets an insane price for their downloads - price in pounds 90% of the same number in dollars.
2) Physical copies, thanks to massive retailer discounts on even the newest items (25% off on release day, often dropping to 50% within a few weeks) are much more competitively priced. So that more than offsets the 10 dollar price difference, and you get something which isn't locked to the console.

So, in 2-3 years then?

Make it 7 or 9 years.

It's not really a ROM hack though, it's pretty much a full new game. It's basically like how PC games would have expansion packs you buy in stores. It's an entirely new game, all new levels (literally every level has been replaced), new character, etc.

Good price for either the DLC version or retail release. I could see some people without the Mario game wanting this instead, or people without good Internet connection preferring physical version instead of downloading.
