It's because Nintendo didn't let Microsoft have control of their entire online structure.

Yes.  It links together through a Wiimote to your Wii.

It's not Microsoft's fault - it's Nintendo's fault.  The Wii U is just too underpowered for the awesomeness that is Windows 8.

Besides, if we did get Windows 8, we'd probably miss out on the DLC that's coming soon to make it usable.
