Title: Nintendo Preparing to Allow NFC Payments on Wii U in Japan

Nintendo is looking to expand its business by allowing electronic payments on its home console.

Nintendo revealed that they are preparing to allow electronic payments via the GamePad’s NFC (near field communication) reader on the Wii U. While no specifics were given as to when gamers will be able to utilize this payment method, the ability to make payments through the NFC reader would allow Wii U owners to make purchases with touch based payment cards, such as Suica. NFC cards are used often in Japan to pay for train fare and to purchase items at convenience stores.

Nintendo released Pokémon Scramble U (Pokémon Rumble U in the West) on April 18 with the ability to use special NFC figures that can be scanned and used in-game. This Wii U downloadable title also can make use of standard NFC cards which, after scanned, gives players a special assist character. There is still no word if or when Nintendo will make use of near field communication in the West.

Near Field Payments haven't really taken off in my part of the world yet. What about elsewhere? Are they commonplace in mainland Europe or North America?

I know they exist in America (at least using a smartphone), but i've never seen in it in person (I live in western New York).

I've seem more of people using their phones as gift cards (like at Starbucks) (or only at Starbucks) to make purchases than actual NFR. I think some credit card companies (VISA?) have them. Other than that, I haven't seen anything to tell me that the use is widespread.

I think its neat Nintendo will allow it, but it seems like something only Japan will really get to use. It's like how Sony is stupid enough to think everyone has super fast Internet like Japan (or South Korea) to be able to stream games as you download them.

They exist in contactless credit/debit cards here (and bus stops) but not via phones. I have 3 banks that offer cards with NFC in them. But I have had three phones and a tablet with NFC in it - all switched off.

The Readers have for the last few years been everywhere but good luck finding a card that supports them.
