Title: Can Aliens Colonial Marines Wii U Be Salvaged?
Post by: Kytim89 on April 15, 2013, 02:11:54 AM
With the abysmal failure Colonial Marines for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the subsequent cancellation for the Wii U, can this game be salvaged? If this were any other game then I would simply chuck it up as a loss and move on. However, being the Aliens fan that I am, and seeing what the modders have done with the game, I am convinced that GearBox could go back and remake the game in some manner for the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox whatever in time to redeem themselves.
In what ways can the game be salvaged?

It was cancelled because collectively, it sucked on all platforms. It made sense to can the Wii U version because Wii U has the smallest install base. I'm glad Sega didn't release it anyway hoping to rope in some people desperate for a new release during this software drought. It wouldn't have made much of a difference, besides annoying those people. Sega doesn't need to lose more integrity or money. Nothing short of having Gearbox Software rebuild the game from scratch would "salvage" the Wii U version which hardly seems worth it and even if Sega went through all that trouble, since it didn't launch alongside the other versions, word of mouth from the original would have killed it immediately. Sega would have effectively lost money on two versions of the same game.

I'm curious about the WiiU version just because of it being worked on by a different team then the others. That being said the game name is so tarnished now that their is no way Sega could recoup their losses and making a fixed version will not net them enough to cover those losses.
Now Legal action against Gearbox. Thats another story.

Ceric hit the nail on the head.
The damage to the game had already been done (Though, I don't believe the license is ruined). Even if it were re-tweaked, or maybe its the only playable version, it would still be the butt of many a joke.
And I could do without seeing the yakety sax video again.

terribledeli: All it would need is a to actually be really good. A name change, and good press and showing everywhere.
The license is definitely not ruined. But people will be careful about bait and switch. Honestly I hope the developer is shunned by all publishers and put out of business. I don't mind if a bad game is created honestly. But this was a bad game created dishonestly for the purpose to exploit a publisher and this developer needs to fail and pay the consequences for dishonest business.
That said, I wish Sega could have a marketable product out of this. I wish the game could be retooled, renamed, and designed to rock. However, I don't think it is possible at all.

It is simple to remake the game and change the name: Aliens Colonial Marines: Special Edition.

The name is the least of their problems. It would cost a whole lot of money to fix the problems with the game, money they probably wouldn't make back.

I don't think required major changes would justify the cost on Sega's end. The game was been in development, in some shape or form, since 2006.
This isn't like a Deus Ex situation where there was a good game but it suffered from missteps. And those missteps seem to have been corrected. The currently available versions of Aliens are just garbage. I honestly can't think of another way to describe it.
From various anonymous sources (I know, I know, they are the worst kind), we've been told that the Wii U version was the worst version. I doubt Demiurge interested in actively being associated with the game at this point.
I think to salvage the video game license, Sega had best just clean their hands and walk away from it for the time being. They've produced three titles from the license, with only one of those being standout (Infestation), in about 6 years.

Aliens Infestation was a great game, but its final boss was hard as Hell. I would really love to see a sequel for the 3DS and Wii U.

It could possibly be salvaged if they named it something different and did something else. Or possibly just re-used the engine for something.

The Question: Can Aliens be salvaged? The Reply: Sure, but they'd have to completely change virtually every aspect of the game. Which would make it something different.
The logical conclusion: No, just scrap the game and make something new. It'll cost you about the same and you won't have the stink of the first game so firmly attached to it.

I just beat Aliens Infestation for the DS and I must say that I wish that Wayforward would develop a sequel for the Wii U and 3DS. After playing the game I kind of wish that Wayforward had done a similar system to Konami's Suikoden series' 108 Stars of Destiny where you recruit as many characters as you can and then they are found back in your HQ for further use. Infestation has a system similar to this, however, but you can only recruit four players at a time and if one dies then you can recruit another. I want them all in one place.
