Title: Was there a reason gven as too why Wiiconnect24 wasn't put in the Wii U?
Post by: shingi_70 on April 08, 2013, 01:44:57 PM
I was just wondering.  I found the low power always on nature of the Orginal Wii to be pretty ahead of its time despite not much content using it. Now with the Wii U it seems like it would be the perfect time to have such features. The ability too download software updates for the OS and games while i'm away seems genius. ou could probably find some Miiverse use for this as well.
Its weird with the PS4 and possibly xbox 720 using a similar feature and Nintendo going as far as too put something similar in the 3DS through spotpass that the Wii U wouldn't have this feature.

mainly because you can leave the system on always anyhow. like i never really turned my wii off either. The wii is damn quiet though. You can download stuff in the background now, so that's convenient. The wii u is pretty quiet when not playing a game. Its also hd, so its much easier to change the channel to another hdmi port. They left it out, but its not a huge deal. It also might have something to do with communication with the controller. I'm surprised the controller doesn't have its own separate power button.

Wait. What exactly is Wiiconnect24? I always assumed that was just Nintendo for 'HEY, IT'S THE INTERNET!'.

WiiConnect24 meant that your console would always be online, even when you weren't gaming.  The Wii would basically "sleep" instead of being turned off completely, and could download content while not in use (think firmware updates, news or weather reports, messages from your friends, or Animal Crossing downloads). That way gamers would have up-to-date information available when turning on the console without having to manually connect to the internet. Wii software would just process whatever downloaded data was already available instead of having to connect and download on startup.

The problem is very few games ever made use of this feature. Few games ever ventured online, so having a way to download or update in-game content when gamers weren't playing really wasn't an issue. So a neat idea that really didn't turn into very much... why bother making it a selling point for Wii U?

Nintendo didn't even support Wii Connect 24 with their own OS updates. Sure you'd get a message that there was an update, but you still had to download it.

See, that's what I thought too.

SpotPass on 3DS is like the full realization of the WiiConnect24 idea.

I was going to say something similar. I'd be surprised if we didn't see a version of Spotpass on Wii U sometime this year, if only for issuing patches & alerting users to content changes (which is pretty much what Nintendo used WiiConnect24 for).

Yeah, the Wii U seems like a much better system to make use of the WiiConnect24 idea.

I always thought playing a game like chess with connect24 would have worked fantastically. Get home from work and see the wii breathing with a new move to ponder.

Do that, but with Advance Wars.

If Advance wars allowed for multiple games at once, then yeah..that would be wonderful.

Well, the technology's certainly there. I have an Uncharted card game on my Vita that has asynchronous play like that, where one player can take their turn; send it to the other player; they make their move at any time; and so on.

Yep. Also Letterpress, and Hero Academy, and dozens of other iPhone games. It's a popular model on that platform.
