Title: Miiverse Coming to Smartphones and PCs by May, 3DS at a Later Date
Post by: tylerohlew on March 27, 2013, 09:37:59 PM

Nintendo on my iPhone? The end is nigh.

Nintendo's Miiverse, a social network for the Wii U, will be coming to PC and smartphone browsers in April or May, with a 3DS version coming at a later date.

The news comes from Nintendo's Kiyoshi Mizuki, producer on the program. Mizuki says the PC and smartphone version will allow basic functionality including drawing doodles and posting comments. This Miiverse will be browser based, and not an independent application. The team is working hard to meet an April release, but it may slip to May.

His Game Developers Conference talk also detailed a 3DS version of Miiverse, which won't be compatible with all existing software. The 3DS version is still in development, and a date has not been provided, but he hopes to bring the social network to the 30 million 3DS users, as well as developers of future 3DS games, as soon as possible.

It's going to be interesting to see how much the 3DS will change when we get Miiverse.

We've had Miiverse on PCs for decades: they're called "message boards".  :P: Eh...whatever. The 3DS Miiverse is the far more relevant information.

Do you think we'll be able to access Miiverse through the 3DS web browser?

Hey, Nintendo's the one who seems to think that posting comments & images online and having other people read them is some revolutionary new system-selling feature.  Just sayin', you probably have better community features than Miiverse right now on this very site.

It's not so much the posting messages that's revolutionary as it is the system-level integration for every game. There's also something to be said for the heavy moderation Nintendo has in place.

Definitely not. If this site were as cool as Miiverse I'd be able to draw a picture of me making a very detailed sad face showing how I feel about your words.

Miiverse is tons of fun, so everybody lighten up.

Also everybody would be long banned by now.

Another reason why Miiverse rocks. An online message board with barely any trolling, etc.? Sign me up.

I'll give that a "Yeah!"   I enjoy reading Miiverse posts FAR more than posts on most internet message boards.  And I can actually read them with my 7 year old without worrying about what will come up.

The 3DS integration is a total no-brainer idea.  It isn't like you walk around with your Wii U everywhere and if you're at home using it I imagine your priority would be to play a game.  But people bring their 3DS everywhere so it's just the way to go.  Hell if any of Nintendo systems was to have it exclusively the 3DS would have made way more sense.  Nintendo probably just didn't think of the idea in time for the 3DS launch.

I guess Smartphone and PC support makes sense but then what is the point of Miiverse?  The world has Facebook and Twitter and doesn't need Nintendo to make their own proprietary version.  It makes more sense as a Nintendo-only thing.

Lame that it's a web-app and not a proper iOS/Android app. Web apps are fine and function great (check out the just-launched http://forecast.io for a brilliant example) but they can't access all the OS-level functions like saving state when you leave the app. They need to launch from scratch every time.

When they announced it a few months ago, they said it would be browser based at first but would later make it in-app.

If it's not using UE4, who cares?
