When I heard the announcement this morning I was sort of upset and excited. I'm upset because many people have already played this game and if it's just a port then what is the reason I need this on my 3DS? I'm excited because I actually haven't beaten this damn game yet- I forget where I left off, but the difficulty level is just crazy and I have a Love/Hate Relationship with the game. I just watched the trailer and it looks real nice for a game that's not ready to be unfinished. I hope they add something meaningful to this version to give it an incentive as to why this deserves a purchase. It seems like this is something Nintendo might not have planned to put out and maybe had DKCR running on the 3DS for a different purpose. I think they needed a gap to fill so they just squeezed this one out. I could be wrong though and maybe Nintendo will add some great multiplayer, street pass and additional levels. Maybe a Banana Rush Mode?!

I find this to be very awkward. The game is only a couple years old and it was released in a very successful console. I could easily understand if they ported a Gamecube game but a best selling Wii game? It will almost certainly underperform in the sales.

Perhaps Nintendo's numbers say not enough people got around to playing it.

According to VGChartz it sold close to six million copies. It seems to be good enough, even in Nintendo's standards. Even if you don't put much faith in VGChartz numbers, they are good enough to establish that this game was a commercial success.

For future reference, don't use VG Chartz. They are well known for making up their numbers and are about as reliable as using a random number generator. The game has sold at least 4.97 million copies (as Nintendo confirmed that amount as of March 31, 2011).

So it appears Monster Games is making this port. Better them than Retro, though I can't imagine this is taking up a majority of their resources.

Well when they're done they need to make a new Excite Truck for Wii U and allow custom soundtracks.

I'd assume the standard $40. If the N64 remakes were full price, I can't see getting any kind of a discount for a port of a Wii game.

GameStop has it listed for $40. Toys R Us and Target don't even have it listed on their sites.

Dude, we all know that VG Chartz isn't accurate. You don't need to post it in every thread every single time it comes up. No one is using them as an exact source to determine the fate of the universe - they're good for a one-off estimate.
Your number is TWO YEARS OLD by this point. Considering the game had only been out for about five months by the point Nintendo provided the number you sourced, I'd say it's very reasonable the game has sold another million copies (if not more, considering the lack of Wii software over these last two years).
Christ, man. Isn't it enough that the person who posted that even admitted that there are issues with VG Chartz numbers. Do you really have to go in and "correct" them with a two year old number?

Release date confirmed for May 24th.
This is going to be a day 1 purchase for me.
Loved the original SNES series. Always thought the Wii game looked really good.

Well you are in luck cause aside from lacking the somewhat "creepy" atmosphere of the originals and not as memorable enemies, this game blows the first 3 out of the water.
Speaking of the atmosphere, I know even in the first there was a silly tone behind the game and it just got sillier with each installment. Still did anyone else see those games with a bit of eerie realism? I can't put my finger on it, but the first 3 had this creepy realistic factor that I thought returns lacked.

Yup. I completely agree. The first two DKC games were amongst my favourites as a kid. I just couldn't get enough of them; but there was always this part of me that also found them a little creepy, and I think that had something to do with how the game looked. The pre-rendered models in the DKC trilogy had a weird Claymation look to them. Being a young kid at the time they did feel more real, as if these twisted little clay creatures weren't on the TV, but in the TV.
In particular, I remember finding the 'Stop & Go Station', 'Orang-utan Gang' and 'Oil Drum Alley' levels to be kind of eerie.

I never really found the DKC games to look creepy. At the time I thought they looked incredibly cool and I figured that all future games would look like that (and I was right for a while; Square used pre-rendered backgrounds in FFVII). These days I can see the flaws so it doesn't look as nice. The sprites are quite pixelated and don't you dare play it on a computer monitor or HDTV.
At the time I felt the graphics made the game seem a little more serious. I like the look of a game like Super Mario World far better now but at the time (remember I was in my early teens then) I felt games like that looked a little juvenile. DKC carried a certain weight in its visuals, it had more emotional impact. I know that sounds dumb for a game about a gorilla trying to get back his bananas but that's how it affected me at the time. The music really connected with me. The underwater music was beautiful but somewhat sad while the factory music just felt like a panicky rush, perfectly matching the levels it was in. DKC is the first game I ever played where I felt the need to play the music to my parents, who don't care at all about any videogame. I even attempted to record a soundtrack by putting a tape recorder up against my TV speaker.
Nowadays I find the music triggers a bittersweet nostalgia, like I'm sad those days of videogame history are gone but I'm glad to have been there. DKC3 has a rendition of the castle music from Super Mario 64. Not only does it sound better than the source game (due to the SNES's superior sound chip) but I associate it as the end of an era. Here was one of the last major SNES games and it does a shout out to the next Nintendo generation. You could not play that game without being reminded that the days of games like this were over. It's rather suitable as a swansong for the SNES.
I notice those that found the graphics creepy are about five years younger than me, which would be a whole videogame generation. I could see how one could find those graphics creepy at a younger age. Stop 'n' Go Station is creepy but I felt it was supposed to be.

I recently played the Wii version again - I only made it about 30% of the way into it when it first came out - and I found that I would really like to see it in 3D. I think that the 3DS makes all of my 2D platformers look alot better. I can't wait for this game and the extra levels. I don't mind the double-dip - it is a different console. I'm used to Xbox games releasing an "enhanced" edition usually a year later.

First Impressions --------------------------------
I've never played Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii, but I just finished downloading the game for 3DS and I'm in the middle of the 1st stage. Paused the game just to write that the 3D with all the foreground and background stuff is pretty incredible (especially when you get launched into the background. It's also refreshing to have a 2D platformer that doesn't have a time limit (unlike Mario) where you can just take your time, finding all the collectables, and all the secrets. I'm not sure how the UI works on the Wii version, but it's convenient having the tally for each collectible on the bottom screen.
Very pretty game and so far so good.
And maybe Nintendo has trained me to expect their games at $39.99 (and I would have payed it), but it was a pleasant surprise to find it at only $34.99. Then again, maybe $34.99 is the maximum price most handheld games should be sold at?

Got it yesterday, so far so good. The game runs great, the 3d effect is one of the best I have seen in the system, it really adds to the overall graphic presentation. Also got my lost levels freebie.

I destroyed this game this weekend! 20 hours to get all the KONG letters and puzzle pieces. I'm impressed with the 3ds version and revisiting DKRC has got me really hype for what ever RETRO will be announcing at E3.

Second Impressions ------------------------------- So I'm at the beginning of the 5th area (Forest) and 2 things:
My only complaint so far is that I wish they made the secret rooms more diverse. So far there are really only 4 or 5 different variations, sometimes with different banana placements, and they're used over and over. A little disappointing.
Not really a complaint because I enjoy difficult games, but it feels like they gave you too many lives in Super Mario 3D Land and too few lives in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. I still have ~40 lives and I haven't used any of my banana coins to buy more yet, but I can already tell that the difficulty curve is about to ramp up. I hope it doesn't get to the point where I have to go back to earlier stages to begin farming extra lives.
I haven't been stopping to replay levels and get every single KONG letter and puzzle piece yet. I'll save that for later after I beat the game (or when I need to farm lives). I'm normally missing 1-2 puzzle pieces per level and that's a good thing. That means they're all hidden pretty well.

Lives in video game are a formality. They're relics from arcades and the limited hardware of yesterday. Games were so short back then so the difficulty was increased and you were given limited chances so you'd be forced to replay levels and learn how to beat them.
Modern Mario games have no delusions about how pointless 1-ups are. They're everywhere. Nintendo even included infinite 1-up trick on purpose in at least two levels. These days we have save states, you get to continue where you left off therefore extra lives really serve no purpose. In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, the game saves every time you complete a stage. If I die a bunch of times in a particular stage, I just go back to the title screen because I can't stand that F-ing pig. I have 99 lives, but a bitch ain't one it doesn't matter. In the Wii version, I once died like 70 times in one of the temple stages. It still didn't make a difference.
Anyway, I don't remember most of these stages so the game is practically new to me.

The game is great, the only problems i have with the transition is that the frame rate tends to slow down during some sections and some levels did not make the trasion to the small screen as well as others.

just skimming through the thread but I noticed it mentioned "other N64 ports" first question which ones, how many? And are they downloads are can I get them used on carts? I know DS had a remake of Mario 64 and I really loved that one, aside from the terrible controls.

I think that would be referring to Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D. You can get both as downloads but they'd probably be cheaper if you tracked down used copies of the physical versions.

I already have all the NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBA games I could ever want so there is no need for me to bother with Virtual Console stuff, I have an iPad iPhone and a PC with Steam so that is where I tend to get my digital games. But I don't like buying digital copies anyways and I have no choice with iOS crap which is why I have so few games for those in the first place. But I am coming around I just resist change.
