Title: Luigi-Themed DLC Adds Over 80 Stages to New Super Mario Bros. U
Post by: Killer_Man_Jaro on February 14, 2013, 10:28:43 AM

A whole new platforming adventure starring the younger plumber himself.

New Super Luigi U, a pack of DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U containing more than 80 brand new levels, was announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation.

By selecting this add-on content at the main menu, every stage on the existing world map will be swapped out with different courses, with Luigi as the playable character instead of Mario. Pricing details for the DLC are currently unknown.

This announcement comes as part of Nintendo's 'Year of Luigi' campaign, which also showcased Luigi's Mansion 2 and the recently revealed Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for 3DS.

New Super Luigi U will be released within this calendar year.

The ear of Luigi!

This is more DLC than I expected from this game. I'll be really interested to see how Nintendo prices this. Still, it's how DLC is supposed to work so I'm excited for it.

EDIT: Also, I hope the difficulty is ramped up a bit.

I'm somewhat surprised that the DLC will effectively make a NSMBU 2.

I wonder how multiplayer will work if Mario isn't playable in these levels.  More Toads? Single player only?

Would be cool to have a playable Peach again, but I don't expect it.

This is what I'm taking about! DLC of an all new 80 level adventure is exactly how I wanted this game expanded.  The price of this is gonna set an important precedent so I'm very curious as to what that will be.

I've got $40 right here that I would gladly spend if I could play the WHOLE game as SUPER Princess Peach.  She has an Excellent Kit that puts Mario to shame.  So give me that with all her moves intact, well I don't care about the PMS powers.  Instant Money.

Yeah. On one hand it's nuts/great to see Nintendo doing something so large scale with dlc but on the other this will be the third NSMB game to release within the span of a year.

80 stages is like an expansion pack from the old days of PC gaming.  This isn't just like some minor thing they clearly deliberately left out of the game to ding everybody, this is substancial.

If Nintendo is going to release cookie-cutter sequels this is the better avenue to go down.  Release a decent sized expansion pack as DLC for a lower price than a regular game.  I imagine this would be a little less involved for their teams than a full on new game, it's cheaper for the consumer and I figure that since it's DLC Nintendo will still feel pressure to fill the release schedule with new standalone retail games.

Though, uh, yeah, NSMB overload here.  I remember in the 90's console wars defending Nintendo on the basis that each Mario game was quite distinct from each other and offered a notable improvement, while Sonic's sequels were far less creative and released far more frequently.  Well THAT sure doesn't fly anymore.  But then I can say that Mario games are good and Sonic games are not so I guess I still win the Nintendo vs. Sega debate.

Sounds great. It'll obviously be pretty expensive, but it's substantial. I like the idea of getting 1 substantial NSMBU pack a year. I think it would be better for us (and them, maybe) if they just extend the life of this one game, rather than making more NSMB games.

It's like Mario Galaxy 2 all over again. Nice.

This might be worthwhile if they are new levels and not just remixed levels of what's already there.

From how I read it, I think it is all new levels.  It doesn't say anything about a remix.

I believe Iwata mentioned it would be sold but didn't detail pricing. Then again my memory of the ND video is a little fuzzy.

That expansive of DLC won't be less than $20.

You're both setting yourselves up for disappointment. Ceric's right, there's no way this is less than $20, and I'd probably lean more toward $30. It's 80 levels, basically a whole new game.

I can't imagine them charging $30 for DLC; that's hard to justify. Even $20 is a lot, if you ask me. If it's going to cost that much, they might as well release it as a separate eShop game so that anyone can buy it (and not just people who own NSMBU).

How is $30 hard to justify? The original game was and is $60, and includes about the same amount of levels as this expansion.

Judging by Nintendo's past DLC, I imagine they're going to spread these 80 levels over the course of several smaller DLC packs to reduce sticker shock.  In fact, they would probably be broken-up by Worlds, like a $5 download for Worlds 1-2 and so on.

How's this for pessimism: I'll bet it's $20+ AND is only remixes of the existing levels.

I could see it done like the NSMB2 level packs, where you can do it in pieces or pay a (slightly) reduced price to buy the whole thing at once.

I am all for this type of DLC. Years ago I was so against it, now after NSMB2, Fire Emblem and Samba De Amigo its a welcome change.

If this is what is happening for Mario U, I hope it's a sign of things to come for Smash Bros and Mario Kart. Only thing is, this seems so ambitious for DLC that I can't possibly  imagine Smash or Kart having even half of that amount of extra content.

For non-retail games, eShop games usually top out at $20 or so. And I  don't believe any of Nintendo's first-party WiiWare games sold for more than $10-12. But this isn't even a new game, it's just DLC that's going to re-use existing maps and swap out the levels with different ones. I'd be shocked if they charged $30 for this.

I suppose the price would be lower if there wasn't much EXTRA work to be done. Whose to say these extra levels were just tweaked levels of some originals cut from the game for whatever reason?

Just throwing it out there.

This is and should be the purpose of DLC. I hope other developers take notes on how it should be done.

$20-$30 is not unreasonable for the amount of content they are putting out in this DLC.  Also, with full retail games up next to games below $10 on the eShop, this particular DLC will not look out of place or offensive at a possible price point between $20-$30 due to the amount of content that's being offered.

That being said, I like the suggestion that it should be offered as packs of levels or worlds and as one whole lump sum at better value. But I suspect it will be released only as a whole as this is suppose to be a unique adventure for Luigi and not just a pack of time trial or coin rush levels with no context between the two (or as much context as any mario game level has).
