Title: The Pokémon X Debacle
Post by: NWR_Josh on January 27, 2013, 10:29:09 AM

You know what's funny? Pokémon X and Y, specifically Pokémon X.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/33151

It has recently come to the media’s attention that, when children have been typing in “Pokémon X videos” into a search engine, they end up with pages and pages of porn starring animated characters. The media is eating this up and, despite my best efforts, I am too. I can’t help it, though! I think it’s the funniest thing ever! No, I am not referring to children losing their innocence to a Google search. That happens to everyone, right?

Parents, I know you think this is the end of the world, but come on. When the first item that comes up on your search is XVideos.com, I think you need to stop and think before continuing down the page. It’s understandable if a 9 year old thinks, “X Videos, huh? I guess Y Videos must be its own site too,” but when parents go, “Oh crap. Porn. Maybe the next one won’t be porn,” you have no one but yourself to blame. Seriously, you just need to include “Y” into the search anywhere and it changes. Believe me, I just did it.

Is Nintendo at fault for not seeing this as a possibility? Should they have just typed the names into the ol’ Google search engine before deciding on the title? This is the age when people access the Internet before most other resources. Maybe it’s not entirely parents’ responsibility. Perhaps companies need to be held responsible. It could be that all of this is really funny because no one expected it to be this bad.

There is now an outcry from some parents saying that Nintendo should change the game’s name. There are some people who are blaming parents for not being stricter with their parental controls. After all, you never know when a 10 year old kid will just be typing “sexy” into Google because he heard it on TV without having any idea what the word means, so he then see pages and pages of naked bodies spread across the screen. This leads to years of searching for Internet pornography so often that the Internet becomes the only way he can interact with anyone. This reliance on text leads to the kid getting a job writing for a Nintendo fan site just so he can feel like he is socializing with people, when he is actually stuck in his room typing for hours on end, searching and longing for a community that accepts him for who he is and not who his parents wanted him to be. Or something.

Guys, we’ve known each other for a while now and...I just...I love you. Oh, no, that’s cool too. I’ll get back to Pokémon. Of course I understand. Sorry...

Pokémon X, you’ve just destroyed my life. I hope you’re happy.

I hope that the X and Y aspects of the titles flesh out (heh) to have to deal with Female and Male chromosomes  as some people have speculated this could make all the Creationism parents really upset if it hasn't done so already.
I know a parent who doesn't let their kids play Pokemon because of religious reasons. I have my feelings about it, but ultimately I can't judge. I don't mind so much as to how people raise their kids, I just can't stand to see grown people act so ignorant about everything they encounter.
Can't wait for this game to come out!

Of course Nintendo shouldn't be held responsible. So what? Companies can't use the letter X now because porn companies use it? So that's one whole letter basically out of commission. Well they better change the name of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. Better tell us the name of that new Xenoblade game quickly, because all we know to call it is X.

As usual, this comes down to parents not paying enough attention to what their children are doing and then instead of taking responsibility for being inattentive blaming someone other than themselves.

I never would have thought Pokemon X would have brought up porn.  I assume most parents neglected to think of this possibility as well.  Why they would let their children do internet searches unattended is beyond me, though.

I wonder what they typed into Google. I just performed a search on "Pokemon x" and I got zero erotic images (except for an image from an erotic Pokémon Doujinshi... yes, even kids' stuff isn't safe from the wretched hands of these). So I wonder...

Isn't safe search filter on google active by default?

The article suggests what they might be typing in. 'Pokemon X Videos'.

This story is just too funny, lol.

I learned a LOOOOONG time ago that when searching for ANYTHING related to Pokemon on an internet search engine, you'd best have that Safe Search option clicked, else have your retinas burned.

@Pixelated Pixies: Punched that in as well. No porn sites for at least ten pages on Google search with SafeSearch deactivated. However, porn sites pop up the instant that you leave out the space between "x" and "videos".

@joshnickerson: Agreed. There's some messed up stuff out there.

I remember all the fake controversy that media and parents also made around the time of Super Bowl XXX (for obvious reasons). This is a manufactured controversy, Nintendo isn't to blame.

If you omitted video, you'd probably end up with this:

http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-X-Ten-Years/dp/B0000259PK/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1359306299&sr=1-3&keywords=pokemon

At least that way you'd only be exposed to Hoenn Pokerap (IMO, the worst piece of official Pokemon music in any language ever).

Maybe South Park was right. What if Nintendo are seeking to undermine Western society by corrupting our youth?

So while a search for "Pokmemon X Videos" brings up that one porn link- if you don't have SafeSearch enabled. Meanwhile a Google Search for "Pokemon Y Videos" gets you nothing but real Pokemon videos. I saw this story buzzing around the media, but didn't look into it until now.
So who exactly are upset with Nintendo about this? I bet no one and this is just one of those dumb internet/real world collisions that are inevitable and hilarious.

This is pretty funny. I guess parents need to learn how to set up the safe search option. And if there are still pornographic results with the safe search on, they should take that up with Google.

I find it funny that now "Pokemon X Videos" will just produce a bunch of links to websites talking about the controversy.

Porn on Nintendo systems remains a relatively high search term on our site.

Why is no one blaming Google?

Because their slogan is "Don't be evil." How could they do anything wrong?

Parents are supposed to put filters on the internet for their children. No one's fault but their own.

seriously leaving the default search engine safeties on in this day and age will get rid of most of not all the porn on the search results.  You have to manually turn it off.  No on to blame but themselves.

And for the really concerned parents, they can buy additional software that would let them block stuff on their computer.

These. I also propagate that parents should not allow their children to own a device with internet access they cannot oversee.
