Title: Music recommendations
Post by: Pixelated Pixies on December 29, 2012, 06:32:59 PM
Having had a quick search on the forums I was unable to find a 'rate the last movie you've seen' or 'new movies/tv shows we should keep an eye out for!' equivalent for music (please correct me if I'm wrong). Although a huge fan of music I rarely actually do any research or make any concerted effort to remain up to date; much of my taste in music is therefore shaped by live gigs, recommendations and pure happenstance. So let's all throw something in and take something away.

Nathaniel Rateliff - A great lyricist with a pair of pipes that would make Robert Plant envious. When I first saw this guy play in a bar in Belfast it was a revelation. I had no idea who he was (the extent of my knowledge was that he was from Missouri and that he played acoustic guitar), but by the end of that first gig I was hooked. If you like the autumnal nature of Nick Drake but also enjoy someone who can really scream a song then you might want to check him out.
The Low Anthem - Now that I look back, it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. At the same gig that I was introduced to Rateliff I was also introduced to the fantastic Low Anthem. That was back in 2010 and I've now seen them three times. They bring an etherealness to their live performances that is simply hypnotic. They're a must for any fan of folk.
The Leisure Society - I would have called my self a moderate a fan of this band back when their album 'The Sleeper' was released in 2009, but their latest album 'Into the Murky Waters' was without a doubt my album of 2011. It's simply incredible. As an album it demonstrates a deftness and subtlety that most indie bands simply can't grasp.

Music threads always tend to die out around here, its a shame actually.
I'll back-up recommendations for the Pixies, Purity Ring and of course Weird Al. I'll throw my hat into the ring by suggesting:
Blockhead
if only for the music video
The Internet
not nearly as geeky as they should be with a name like that
Also check out The Pauses (http://youtu.be/4Mb-CT1noy0), Party Supplies (http://youtu.be/3VjbibfRcYw), and The Chromatics (http://youtu.be/ygCOLpZhWyg).
These are just some of the acts I've been listening to this year.

Jessie Ware - It's hard to explain her properly but "sophisticated pop music" is probably the right way to describe her.

Music recommendations are tough when you don't know what other people enjoy, or why.
That being said, here are my musical mainstays:
Minus The Bear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minus_the_Bear) Suggested Albums: "Highly Refined Pirates", "Menos El Oso"
Sage Francis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sage_Francis) Suggested Albums: "Personal Journals", "A Healthy Distrust"
Murder By Death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_by_Death_%28band%29) Suggested Albums: "Who will survive, and what will be left of them?", "In Bocca Al Lupo", "Red of Tooth and Claw"
Death Cab For Cutie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Cab_for_Cutie) Suggested Albums: "The Photo Album", "Transatlanticism", "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes"
The Arcade Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_Fire) Suggested Albums: "Funeral", "Neon Bible" (I haven't listened to any of their albums since, cant suggest beyond those two because of this)
As a side note, I hate how "Indie" has been used as a genre of music. There is such a diverse range of sounds and styles that are thrown into that description that it completely loses its meaning.

Although I've considered myself a huge fan of The Kinks for many years, today was the first time I had actually sat down and gave any considerable attention to 'Preservation Act 2'. While it's certainly not the best Kinks album (which, for the record is, Muswell Hillbillies) it was incredibly varied and enthusiastic. More importantly it was immensely enjoyable.
Something about The Kinks' quintessential Britishness just brings a smile to my face (and that's hard for me to say as an Irishman :P: ). Goddamn it I love the Kinks!

I've recently went back and listened to the Cure's first album after a few of its tracks came up back to back (or in close enough succession) while I had my music player on random, and mannnnn do I wish they had more of these albums before their sound developed further!
Great guitar rock in this album, and while I can cop out and post a more well known song that might have more appeal to first time listeners.. **** it! Please enjoy this underrated number by one of my all-time favorite bands:

Having watched the documentary 'Searching for Sugar Man' I'm now completely obsessed with Jesus 'Sixto' Rodriguez. It does him little justice to compare him to other artists (he truely does have a sound that is all his own), but his songs do have elements which remind me of some of my favourite artists. His voice often reminds me of Nick Drake's singing style, the construction of his riffs and the layering of orchestral instrumentation remind me of Neil Diamond, and the social commentary in his lyrics is up there with Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
I highly recommend watching the documentary, but I think the music of the man himself is what is going to stick with for the long term.
Here is one of my favourites.

Saw him two years ago and had a hilarious time.

Just got around to checking this out, I really enjoyed it. Awesome stuff. 03:31 - 04:40 blew my mind. As a teenager I was in a band called Radio Brine and we were going for a similar sound. Less refined of course, but similar.
I've got another recommendation for any fans of Motorhead out there (I was kind of late to the party on this one myself. I only started listening to them about 3 years ago, and they broke up shortly after). Check it out.

I woke up this morning with Frank Black's 'Abstract Plain' lodged firmly in my brain. I don't know why, I haven't listened to that song in over a year, but for some reason it's been following me around all day. To be perfectly honest, it's driving me mad, lol. I just can't get it out of my head! I've even tried humming the Fragle Rock theme (that usually over powers any other tune in my head) but to no avail.
Press play if you dare.
If 'Abstract Plain' does get stuck in your head, take the following 2 times a day for 4 weeks.

The new My Bloody Valentine album m b v (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOfficialMBV/videos?view=0&flow=grid) dropped and it's pretty killer. Nice to have a new album from them after 20 years and I've already ordered the vinyl. I'm also seeing them in a couple of weeks so that should also be killer!
A lot of new stuff coming out is sounding great.
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds:
The Knife:
The Strokes:
The Drones (my favourite Australian band btw):
All these guys have albums slated for release this year and this is only a sliver of the stuff I'm looking forward to. 2013 is looking to be a stellar year.

I know MBV were also gonna feature pretty heavily in that Beautiful Noise documentary you made the Kickstarter thread about. Their last album Loveless is a classic and it's been hugely influential on noise rock and shoegaze music. It's also one of the best albums of the 90's.

Nathaniel Rateliff might be worth looking into. He's been and up and coming for years now, lol. I've seen him live twice, the second time he was backing up a local Belfast band, and both times were a lot of fun.

How I haven't found this thread till now baffles me. I'm a MAJOR music nerd -- heck, I even have a blog where I review classic rock albums. But yeah -- recommendations.
The most pressing one I can think of is Embryonic by The Flaming Lips. It came out back in 2009 to some minor fanfare, but it's still underrated -- I'm calling it the best album I've heard since London Calling, and that was 1979. Ya like psych-rock? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CHECK THIS OUT. It's not too accessible, but man, is it fantastic. "Watching the Planets", "Powerless", and "Silver Trembling Hands" are a few standout tracks.
...I've gotta go, I'll post more later.

As is my way, I'm currently obsessing over a handful of albums and tracks to the detriment of listening to anything else. I can't help myself. Check 'em out.
First up is 'Isn't It Time' by the The Beach Boys. Holy F***ing S*** is this song catchy. I simply cannot stop singing that opening line in my head over and over again. It's incredible. I'm still not exactly clear how it is that I managed to miss this album when it was released last year (I've adored The Beach Boys since I was like 16), but I'm so glad that I finally got around to listening to it. It's pretty much been the soundtrack to my summer so far.
Remember guys, the good times never have to end!
The next song I've been fixated with recently has been 'Killing My Heart' by The Waterboys. I'll admit I'm pretty new to this band, but I do love it when they fully embrace their folk influences as they do here. I love the energy, but also the way the song just collapses on itself towards the end.
It was thanks to a reference in a Pixies biography I read as a teenager that I became aware of Husker Du, and their amazing album Zen Arcade. I listened to it for the first time in years earlier today, and man it's good. I think I forgot just how Good! I mean...just listen to it!
Being a fan of her previous two albums, I was psyched to hear Laura Marling's new album 'Once I was an Eagle'. I'm happy to report that it's fantastic. This song in particular stood out for me. The lyrics really have a bite to them, which is exactly what I look for in a good Marling song. Check it out.

Has anyone here ever listened to the Heathers? They are a group of Irish folk/rock singers I like them lately. I also have been getting into more alternative stuff from the 90's that I missed out on the first time around. Back then I was all into gangsta rap and techno-y stuff so I skipped out on a lot of the other stuff.
My favorite band of all time is and always will be Garbage that is not going to change. I used to be a music producer of sorts but I am so far removed from that world I really don't have any opinions other than that.

I do not recommend the new Avenged Sevenfold Album, Hail to the King. Easily their worst album. It's basically their attempt at making a "Black Album" (Metallica), there's even a song that sounds just like Enter Sandman (Shepherds of Fire), it's even the first track like Enter Sandman. It sucks. Avoid it.

I haven't listen to much Avenged Sevenfold, but I do have the whole Nightmare album. Judging by what people say about their past music, and combined with my personal opinion of the album, safe to say their quality is decreasing. Can't say my opinion is an accurate one.
Here's one of my new favorite metal albums, a good recommendation for people that like a good blend of diverse songs:

So, I've been seeing this Apple advert lately that has a group of teens putting together a cover version of the Pixies Gigantic. Mind you, I've known of this band for a long time (they hit their stride in the late 80s/early 90s before breaking up), but I have become such a huge fan, not only of this song, but the group in general. Surfer Rosa, the album this song comes from, is brilliant.

Title: Re: Music recommendations
Post by: Pixelated Pixies on May 25, 2014, 09:17:40 PM
So, much like when I see a film, I like to allow some time after a gig before I try to assess it.
Enough time has now passed since the 'Neutral Milk Hotel' gig that I can say with some confidence that it was a disappointment. I sensed a real antagonistic atmosphere between the audience and the band, caused I think by the fact that the band had requested that the organisers put up posters throughout the venue insisting that no-one in the audience take pictures of the band. Which seems like a ridiculous request in 2014. I never take pictures of bands at gigs and in this case most people seemed to respect the bands wishes, but of course there was a handful of people who did not, and the band became visibly agitated; and when the band becomes agitated it's difficult for the audience to relax and enjoy the music. For better or worse some audience members like to take pictures of their experience and of the band, and if bands aren't comfortable with that, well, maybe they're in the wrong business.
'Neutral' also didn't sound spectacular, but having seen other bands in the same venue, I'm willing to chalk that up to the fact that the acoustics in that particular venue suck. I attended the same venue to see Mudhoney (one of my childhood favourites) and they also sounded like ass.
Next up: The War on Drugs.

I've got the stockholm syndrome!
Don't ask me why this song has hooked me so but it has! It was on Ultra 2014, a complilation of dance hits and I heard it twice on sunday listening to the cd while driving and today as I heard for the third time on my way to work, it has just gripped me and I've listened to it 6 more times now today. I love it! I'll probably burn out fast on the song now but right now, it's great!
On another topic, does anyone go by the rule of 3 when it comes to songs? There are some songs where right as I'm listening to it, I know it's a keeper. But a lot of times, I hear music that I'm not negative on but I'm also not over the moon about. But by the thrid listening of it, I can either be gripped by it or dismiss it as bland and move on. This happened to me with the album The Lexicon of Love by ABC. I listened through it a couple times but on the third playthrough, I was finally hooked by a bunch of the songs. I ended up listening to that album almost daily for 2 years. I don't listen to it that much anymore but when I do play it, I usually end up listening to it again and again for awhile. If I'd just dismissed after the first time through, I'd never have experienced all it had to offer.
The power of 3!

Weezer's "Everything Will Be Alright in the End" is album of the year for me. It's hard to categorize it with other Weezer albums, but if I had to I'd put it as a mix between the Red Album, Maladroit, and Pinkerton.
