Title: Blu-Ray + Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Download + Soundtrack + VHS + Laserdisc + Beta
Post by: UncleBob on November 27, 2012, 01:17:00 AM
Aside from making us give them more money, why do studios bundle so many Blu-Ray discs with the DVDs? It's even worse with 3D Blu-Rays - there are so few that come with just the 3D disc. Why the heck do I want the DVD if I have a Blu-Ray player?
Grr.

Portable Players. The Blu-Ray for Kids because they don't sell glasses there size pretty much. Blu-Ray 3D to allow you to use your full TV. Digital just because why not?

I have to jump in on this and echo Ceric's statement. Also, I'm the only one in mine or my wife's family that has anything that plays a Blu-Ray player, so when we visit family and want them to see a movie we own, we're able to bring the copy with. Thirdly, we only have one Blu-Ray player, so having a DVD copy enables us to watch our movies on our bedroom tv late at night.
Main reason why they are sold that way? To justify them selling it for $35+. I'm guessing 3D tv owners are a small segment of the television owning population, so they add all the bells and whistles in so they can justify selling it at an inflated price.

I won't buy a Blu-ray Disc movie if it doesn't have digital, because I can load it onto my iPod Touch or iPad. The DVD I can let my girl watch on her computer or my mom on her DVD player (neither owns a BD player). The 3D disc is worthless since very few people own 3D TV's and their adoption rate is so slow that it is basically dead, the only way 3D will be adopted as the norm is if they start making all new TV's be 3D.

I want my Blu Rays with included DVD if possible for two reasons: DVD is for the bedroom and for the car.
I don't give a crap about digital copies. Useless for me at present.

Maybe I just watch movies different from most folks. I watch it once, then, in a couple of years, I might get it out and watch it again.
For that, only being able to watch it in one room isn't a big deal for me.
If someone was smart, they'd create a website designed around selling/trading the "extra" discs that come with these sets. I mean, if I bought the 3D version of Avengers (~$35) and sold the DVD for $5, the Blu-Ray for $5 and the digital download for $5, then three people just got a pretty darn good deal and I just cut my cost nearly in half.

Yeah I like having the DVD because I know way too many luddites that don't have bluray. I don't normally care about digital copies, but I did appreciate that the JAWS bluray included the HD iTunes digital copy. Every other digital copy I've ever gotten is sub-SD quality which is worthless to me.

Why do you care what your friends have though? I buy movies for me, not to loan out to friends. It's silly to think it's better to pay more for a movie because then you can loan it out. Now, if you're renting it out. :D

Sometimes you gotta watch movies not at your own house. And sometimes that DVD is the only way to do it. Does it happen that often? No. But it does happen.

Does it happen often enough that it's worth paying $5-$10 more for every movie you buy?

I don't think that happens? There are a few movies that are just standalone blurays and also have the combo pack and they're usually pretty similarly priced. Lots of Universal's movies are this way. Right now on Amazon, the combo pack for FARGO is five dollars LESS than the standalone bluray. Same thing with the Bourne movies. And it's not like new blurays shot up in price when they started including DVDs. They stayed about the same.

In Fact they dropped. Blu-Ray are vastly less expensive then they were when I got my PS3.

I think that just shows how out of whack the pricing is.
I don't think we can go by the price of Blu-rays not going up - the fact that they haven't really came down speaks volumes. I remember when DVDs were still new, they were running $25-$30. Now, new releases can be had as low as $10.

I was just at Best Buy and most new BluRay releases were like $30-35...pretty sure that's the same price they were when it debuted. Way too much money if you ask me.

DVD new releases are that cheap because bluray and loads of other digital formats exist. Bluray is, by quite a margin, the highest quality format you can watch movies/tv shows in and it will be until we all get way better internet and can stream higher bitrates. So yes, you're still paying something of a premium for them. I hardly ever buy blurays the day they release so maybe I'm not the best example, but I've purchased almost all of my blurays for less than $20. Except Criterion Collection stuff, but that's different.

I only have a handful of BluRay movies, but they were all free except for the Big Four, which I paid the extra $8 or so after returning the DVD.

If I can get the movie I want cheaper with just the Blu-Ray, then I do. It's hard to justify the price of DVD and digital copy. It's happened, sure. But I'm pretty sure I'll almost never use the DVD nor the digital copy.
I kinda have to side with Bob on this one. Then again, I doubt the cost would go down significantly.
