Title: Mafia LVIII Signup Thread: Radio Free Mafia
Post by: NWR_insanolord on November 21, 2012, 04:24:48 PM
It's time again for the official pastime of the NWR Forums, the great game of Mafia.
The current plan is for signups to be open through December 1, with the game starting up on Monday December 3.
The theme of the game this time is our very own Nintendo World Report. The RFN crew has gone mad with power, and it's up to the intrepid members of the NWR Forums to stop them. Role playing is very encouraged, though try not to get mean-spirited with it.
To get the most out of this game we're going to need 20-25 players, so I really hope we get a good turnout.

Roles:
Forums (Townies):
BlackNMild2k1 - Investigator: Always the first to know new information, BnM can use his mysterious sources to find the identity of another player once a night.
ShyGuy - Protector: ShyGuy takes his delusions of grandeur to the next level, and this time he really is the Batman of the NWR forums. He can use his abilities to protect one player from attack per night.
Insanolord - Vote Changer: The corrupt forum moderator, insanolord can abuse his power to edit someone's post and change their vote to whatever he wants it to be.
UncleBob - Role Hoarder: UncleBob has moved up from hoarding Nintendo products to hoarding Mafia roles. He can take another player's role for a day.
Stogi - Thread Locker: Stogi's up to his old tricks again, and he has a one time power to lock any day's thread, preventing any more votes or vote changes from taking effect.
RFN Crew (Mafia)
Jonny Metts - The Godfather: Dr. Metts calls the shots on RFN, and calls the hits for the Mafia.
James Jones - Forum Maintenance: Crimm can use his admin powers to take down the forums for an hour a day, and any votes that are cast during that hour don't count.
Jon Lindemann - Vote Blocker: Jon can force his Lindemann Syndrome onto someone else, making them too busy playing through their backlog for their vote to go through.
Guillaume Veillette - Pretender: The new man on the crew, you never really know who he is. He can use his power to show up to the investigator as any role he chooses.
Other Roles:
Greg Leahy - Killer: Forced out of RFN for being too damn likable, Greg's out for revenge, and he's intent on taking out everyone at Nintendo World Report. Greg can kill one player of his choosing per night.
S-U-P-E-R - Bomber: The greatest forum troll in all the land, Ty's goal is to wreak chaos on this game and disrupt everything. If voted out, he takes with him everyone who voted for him.
The Rules Of The Game What is the purpose of the game?
If you are on the townie side, you want to vote out all those on the mafia side and the killer.
If you are on the mafia side, you want to vote out all those on the townie side and the killer.
If you are the killer, you want to vote out all other players.
If you are the bomber, you want to make everyone vote for you.
How do I vote? What is involved?
Each day all players are allowed to vote for whomever they believe is mafia. Since all roles remain anonymous, mafia members will vote along with the townies.
Each day a new thread will be made and will open up with a narrative. Each player then has the chance to vote off another player. Simply type in BOLD for whom ever you wish to vote against. Example: Vote insanolord.
You may change your vote as much as you like, but any old votes must remain legible. Simply edit the post, unbold the vote, and make a new post with the new vote. So, you're old vote should look something like this: un-Vote insanolord.
What is a mafia hit?
Since the mafia is a small group of players, the mafia are able to make one hit every night and eliminate a player from the game. These are not based on calendar numbers, but rather on game days. The only one who may contact the host with the kill is the Godfather.
In addition, the Killer also is able to make a hit each night of their own choosing.
How is a winner determined?
For the townies to win, they need to eliminate all mafia members and the killer from the game.
For the mafia to win, they only need to tie the game. I.E., there are two townies left and two mafia members left. However, they must also eliminate the killer role as well. They can not win by a tie if one of the other roles is the killer.
The killer wins either by eliminating all other players so that they are the only player left in the game or it is the killer and 1 townie left standing at the end. The killer must eliminate all mafia members.
Other Rules:
•The day thread closes at Midnight EST. Night actions are due by 1 a.m. •In the event of a tie, the thread will stay open another half hour, with the tie being broken by the first vote. If there is still a tie after 30 minutes, everyone who is tied will be killed. •Players must vote at least once every three days or else be killed due to inaction. •Send your night actions to both me and Maxi.

Just to note I will be co hosting the game with Insanolord but for the most part you won't know I am here since Insanolord will be doing most of the heavy lifting. The only thing you need to do with me is send me your night actions as well as to Insanolord that way we can check each other to make sure things are correct. Okay sending out invites.

Title: Re: Mafia LVIII Signup Thread: Radio Free Mafia

Okay here is the basic rundown of how a typical day would work. After sign ups end Insanolord or myself will PM everyone and tell them what role they have. So you will have one of those roles up there or you will be just a normal townie which can just vote in the day and try to figure out who is on the Mafia's side via voting patterns and talk in the thread. That will go on till Insanolord locks the thread for the day and then whoever has the most votes will be out of the game.
You vote for someone by bolding your text and saying vote then the name of the person. Once the thread is locked for the day then the role actions happen for those with roles and the Mafia gets to kill someone during the night and the night action period will be open for 1 hour we decided. After me and Insanolord go through the actions Insanolord will put up the next day with the results and then it will continue on.
The win conditions for the 3 sides are as follows. The townie side needs to vote out all the RFN crew/Mafia and the other roles do need to be out of the game too. The Mafia/RFN need to have equal amount of people alive so at the moment they have 4 so they would need the townie side down to 4 people and also the other side be gone.So what ever amount of people they have at the time they need to get it down to. For the other side to win they need everyone in the game to be dead.

Isn't there a thread that explains how a basic Mafia game works? Somebody should dig that up for the new players... Perhaps Ill go searching for it.

Usually when the game gets put up the host puts up the basic rules for the game in the roles section. I don't see Insanolord on but when he gets on I will be sure he adds those to there.

What, did Broodwars decide to hide in his fallout shelter until 2016? Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention, but I don't recall seeing his username around lately.
How much effort does playing Mafia involve? By this, I mean is it something I can participate in without devoting more than 5 minutes a night?

lolmonade you do need to vote once every 3 days or you will be kicked from the game but if you are a very quick reader and can figure out things real quick in the day threads then I suppose that is possible. Basically if you can read between the lines and see allegiances within the threads and any PMs you get then it is possible to speed play the game.
Sometimes someone will post in the day threads will be nice enough and post the goings of the past day and any evidence that the town has come up with and that will help digest things nicely for everyone.

Ideally, you'd want to have time to read all the posts in the daily threads and respond to any PMs (especially if you're Mafia), so that you can try to read people and figure out what they are up to. But the only real participation needed is the daily voting, which can always just be a guess if you can't/haven't checked anything else out.

After a lot of hassle with the formatting, I managed to plagiarize Khush's rules post from his last game and add it to the rules here, which are in the second post in this thread. If you're new to Mafia, you should give that a read and it will explain the basics of the game.
EDIT: And no, Stratos, you're not too late. Signups are open through Saturday, so if you haven't signed up yet you've still got time.

Cool we have 20 people now we can do the regular game. Now if we get 25 people we can add in the bomber role otherwise we are just having the killer role. Still have a few days to get the five people but if we don't get them that's fine too.

Cool 22 people. By my math it should work out like this for the roles as it stands now. 4 Mafia, 1 other role,5 townie roles and 12 normal townies.
Still some time to get more people.
Title: Re: Mafia LVIII Signup Thread: Radio Free Mafia
Post by: Khushrenada on November 30, 2012, 04:51:25 PM
Personally, I think you should add one more mafia member and make it a gang of 5. It's generally best to keep the mafia around 25% of the players playing especially if we have a killer role now. As it stands, if the mafia doesn't lose a single member and eliminates the killer, it would take them 7 game days to achieve a tie with the remaining townies and win. That's a pretty tall order. Most likely they will lose a member within that time further setting back a win date and the longer a game goes on, the less and less chance the mafia has at winning. However, I am basing this math off the killer not making any hits but the killer is a wildcard and could also end up hitting mafia members so you never know which way the killer will influence the game.
Even with a 5 member mafia, it would take them 6 days to achieve victory without losing a member. However, with a killer and a possible bomber to take out other players, that date could move up or fall back. But even with a lose of a couple members before Day 6, the mafia could still be in good shape than a 4 man mafia losing 2 members before Day 6 and keep the game competative.
That's my thinking on the matter anyways.

I do see your point Khushrenada but as far as I know there is only 4 current hosts to RFN so that limits the choices. I guess we can look at the numbers at the end of the sign ups and balance it and add a goon or a past RFN host to the numbers and see what we have there. I myself have not really listened to much RFN so maybe people can chime in here on any possible choices and see if we can add one in.

23 people signed up with 1 hour left in sign ups.
Sign ups are closed for the game. Insanolord will send out roles most likely in the morning. Also Insanolord if you can move this thread over to the Mafia forum when you do your threads that will help some of the new players.
Going with a 5 person Mafia with the 5th person being a goon for those curious.
