Title: Who is buying a Wii U at launch?
Post by: Mop it up on November 14, 2012, 08:22:07 PM
I was just curious of the percentage of people here who will be buying one on day one.

I WANT to get one this Sunday, but I wont have the money for it since I am in-between jobs at the moment.

Have one pre-ordered at Wal-Mart, so plan on getting it at Midnight.

My local gamestop told me that they've had some people cancel their pre-orders on them though, so they made me swear I'd call them if I had any problems with my pre-order.

Heading out after work to the (very far away) mall in town whose EB Games will be open the earliest that day and waiting it out, hopefully get some tips from my coworker who was the first in line for the iPhone 5 a few months ago XD

Only way my vote changes from "Not this year" is if the lottery ticket I bought into at work today pays off for $46 million.

I'd love to get me some MariU, but $400...

Pre-ordered mine as soon as Best Buy emailed me about it. I don't think I've ever bought a console from them but after nothing but shitty customer service at 5 different GameStops all in my immediate vicinity, I gave up on them years ago.

If I had known Nintendo World Store was going to have an event, I would of loved to of done my pre-order there; as far as I know it's the ONLY retailer doing a Midnight launch, which would be nice.. But not only is Best Buy closer but they offered the convenience of pre-ordering online. I actually pre-ordered it while at work, what could be better?

If I hadn't recently spent so much on my car, I'd still go to the NWS Launch event and try to pick one up as a gift, but that's not gonna happen unless..

I was one of the lucky few to get a preorder of a Deluxe system at GameStop just hours before they stopped taking them. I've got the system, a Pro Controller and all my games completely paid off, so I just need to walk in Sunday morning and pick them up. I can't wait!

I have enough of a backlog on the Wii and DS plus too many other things to spend money on right now that there's no way I could justify buying a WiiU.  Hopefully at some point I'll get one but that won't be until next year at least.

They let you pre-order controllers!? wtf..

My Wii U is paid off and that's enough for me. I plan on strolling in casually around opening, not because I think there will be a line or anything - I just want to get as much game time in that day as possible, picking out at LEAST 1 game and heading home. I even have the following Monday off from work so I plan on playing it all damn night. It's been a long time since I've been able to do that with any video game or system.. that's the part that excites me the most.

I pre-ordered mine at Best Buy in September, the Friday after Nintendo announced the price. It was a just-in-case-I-change-my-mind pre-order which worked out because I totally changed my mind. I heard that they were doing a midnight launch, but I'm going to call before I head up.
Title: Re: Who is buying a Wii U at launch?
Post by: EasyCure on November 14, 2012, 11:09:34 PM
You've made me realize that I don't actually know if my local Best Buy is doing a midnight launch or not. The on-line pre-order indicates only that system should by there by the launch day (per-ordered as an 'in-store pickup') and that the store would call when it's ready. Obviously that's your typical in store pick up order would say, and I haven't bothered finding out if they would do a midnight launch, because obviously they'll already have them in-store for launch..

excuse me, I need to make a phone call.

I won't buy it at launch since those units always have the most problems.  It's better to wait a few months so I can get a newer model that will have any problems the launch ones did fixed up.

Preordered the deluxe at Toys R US the day after the press conference since Gamestop had already sold out of preorders.

I currently have two online pre-orders -- one at Future Shop and one at EB Games -- both of which were placed the weekend immediately following the September press event. I'm assuming/hoping/praying that one of those will go through, and that I will be getting my Wii U a day or two shortly after launch day.

I'm thinking about downloading NSMBU, since I'll have the deluxe digital promotion I should take advantage of. Either way, I'll be paying $60 for the game.

Yeah, true, Ceric. My GameStop wasn't even given enough payroll/hours for them to do a midnight Black Ops 2 launch... so it more than likely isn't happening for Wii U. Though... the manager's response when I questioned her about this was, "We're just not sure. We have no clue yet." This was two days ago. :/

This is Nintendo hardware, you will be fine getting launch day software since launch systems rarely have problems.

With the Wii some of the launch systems had problems playing Brawl because it was dual layered.  Sure it was a small amount but none of the systems released after launch were reported to have this problem.

I bought a red Wii (the one bundled with NSMBW) and it had this problem too (though my launch Wii did NOT have this problem). So it's not true that post-launch systems didn't have this problem. My point still remains that Nintendo launch systems rarely have problems.

I go to Florida International University and we have a gamestop in the main building, so i preorder my wiiu there the same day pre orders opened, but i went today to find out the launch plans for sunday and the bastards are not opening sunday due to the university policies, i asked if i could transfer my pre order to another store but no. so basically I am fu**ed, i have to wait until Monday morning, while people get to hold their wii u's on sunday. just wanna to get that out my chest, it really sucks.

I'm in the "it's Nintendo Hardware" bandcamp because my launch day GCN still works fine (even after a few accidental falls and a cracked controller port face-plate), as did my original white launch day Wii which did eventually have its disc drive burn out but I did a LOT of gaming on that system before it died and I've heard it may of been in part due to the system being vertical.

I haven't plugged my launch day N64 in a while but I'm sure it works great too. I'm not worried about the Wii U.

It's actually worth more now.

Anyway, I went to Best Buy today to exchange Mario Tennis Open for Paper Mario: Sticker Star and asked about the Wii U launch. No midnight launch confirmed. :(

On the bright side, no waiting in line confirmed. :) My pre-order will be waiting behind customer service. I will, however, walk the no pro-order line with my 3DS in tow for all of those precious, precious StreetPasses.

The StreetPasses are probably the biggest reason I'm upset there's not a midnight launch at my GameStop. If the 3DS midnight launch was any indication, there would have been a good amount of people there to tag.

It's a 3DS feature that allows you to exchange data with other 3DS owners within range. I'm trying to finish Find Mii 2 to get more hats. I'm currently using the Metroid hat.

I know that much about StreetPass I just don't know exactly what kind of data its exchanging. I'll get one eventually; I'm never an early adopter with handhelds. Didn't get a GB until the GBC, didn't get a DS until Mario Kart DS came out and regretted it because the DSL was right around the corner. This is getting off topic though.

I got my Deluxe preordered the same afternoon as the release date was announced.  Just traded in my OG 360 today towards it and was going to trade in my Wii but since there was a slight sound of something ratling around inside the system, Gamestop said they'll have to consider it a "damaged" unit.  Given you only get 30 dollars for a used Wii, I can't even imagine the levels of raping I'd have to suffer for a "damaged" Wii that still works fine.  AND they also wouldn't take my Wii because I didn't have the basic audio video cables, I had the dam component ones which I guess don't count.  To make a long story short, I'll be selling my Wii on Ebay now.

Let me get back on track though.  I think I have around 135 payed off of my preorder but will be paying it in full probably on Saturday.  Will also be looking to get ZombiU and its a toss up right now between AssCreed 3, CoD, and Darkstalkers 2..oh and NBA 2k13.  ZombiU is a def for me but the others I want to read up on their reviews.

Quick question though, with Gamestop preorders.  Does anyone know if Gamestop is getting enough to cover their preorders?  I've asked around and they all say if you preordered, your guaranteed a system on launch day.  Then they said its going to be a first come first serve basis when it comes to preorders.  This just has me worried though as I don't trust Gamestop or most of the people that work there (at least in my shops).  Has anyone on here heard anything about Gamestop's preorders that could shed light on this?  Do I have to line up outside Sunday morning even though I have a preorder or can I just walk in and be confident my Deluxe will be there?

Last I heard from different sources is actually that GameStop was going conservative on their actual Pre-Orders and that their was the possibility of having extras.  I need to find that article.

That would be a blessing.  Sunday can't come soon enough.  I had too much vacation time at work that needed to be used before I lost it so I'll be off from Sunday to Thursday.  Good times ahead.

This is one reason why I'm waiting. I do have a launch GameCube that's still ticking, however I've had problems with the Wii I bought 14 months after launch, and I've heard about the 3DS screen scratch issue, though mine only gets scuffs that wipe away.

Now I don't expect there to be problems, but it is a real possibility. The main reason I'm waiting is because I want a larger library, if there were something coming out that I really wanted then I'd get it at launch and risk hardware problems. It's just an added benefit of waiting that I'll get to see if there are any problems I may run into.

I am NOT getting a Wii U on Sunday or anytime in the foreseeable future. There's the practical reasons like I don't have the money, I still have quite a backlog for systems I already own, Xenoblade, etc., but I'm really not chomping at the bit to get one. There's nothing in the launch window that makes me think I need to throw down $400 as fast as I possibly can. Sure, NSMBU and Pikmin 3 will probably be good and/or great, but it's probably gonna take a Metroid or a Zelda or just an avalanche of really good stuff to get me to put up for Wii U. Also maybe a price drop.

@Mannypon: I'd play it safe and try to get there early. Every single pre-order I've done at GS, dating back to as far as I can remember (Loz: OoT - 1998) I've had issues with them. I'm starting to worry about BB and my pre-order and am bracing myself for some BS from them (trying not to rant about the scenarios playing in my head right now).

At least you have all those days off, I'm jealous! I took a vacation earlier this year so by the time Wii U's launch date was confirmed I only had 2 days left in the year to take off. Taking Monday off but saving those last 8 hours for an emergency. Lucky bastard...

My email said I have to pick it up tomorrow but i wonder how much the employees really know/care about it, maybe I could pick it up today... worth a shot no?
Go for it and let us know how it goes.  Add pics if you do get it.

I'll be doing other chores in the area, I may just try. I'll report back (if I'm not too busy playing Zombie U)

@EasyCure - I called mine, it's there, but can't pick it up until tomorrow.

One of the biggest gamestops in the country, if not the biggest, with a very late night friendly environment is not doing a midnight launch. If they aren't who is?

I guess it doesn't bother me either way. I just wanted to hang around and play Pokemon and Mario Kart.

I guess that's something to think about. I don't want buy one, I just want to hang out with fellow stinky nerds. Or maybe not, it's cold today.

Got my voicemail from GameStop a couple hours ago. I do wish they did a midnight launch, but I'll be bright eyes and bushy tailed when I do pick it up. I can't wait to start hooking up to the NWR community on Miiverse.

As for that Best Buy pickup today issue, I was reading that someone in the Neogaf forums actually got to pick theres up today and once the staff realized they Fed up, they called and offered him a 25 dollar gift card to bring it back lol.  I don't know how true it is but I wouldn't be suprised.

Anyways, I finally got my system paid off today and was assured they have enough at my local Gamestop to cover preorders (I'll still be there early just in case though).
I really can't wait though.  I've never really been too big on online gaming even though I have a 360 and PS3 but Nintendo's whole approach really has me excited for this.  I too cannot wait to have the NWR posse of Miis running around my WiiU.  I think I'm going to even change my profile avatar to my Mii so everyone will be able to recognize me if they ever see me running around their games or plaza lol

I think this is a good idea, plus I need to get rid of my Halloween avatar.

I was near the BB where my pre-order was made but I was too busy doing other things that I didn't bother. I have a lot of work to do tonight so it's probably for the best that I couldn't get my hands on it early.

Yeah, I should be doing some homework for class Monday but I'm too enthralled reading the meltdowns over in the Neogaf ZombiU review thread lol.

Quick question though for everyone who is getting the WiiU.  Are you getting a screen protector for the gamepad or you jumping in without protection?  I'm a little paranoid about touchscreens so I might be picking up a screen protector tomorrow.  Does anyone also know if the gamepad's screen is scratch resistant or have any special layers to it.

I'm forgoing getting a screen protector because I'll be the primary user of the device and, if the DS and 3DS touch screens are anything to go by, I think the GamePad's screen will be pretty scratch resistant on it's own. Though, now that I have 2 little girls at home, I think I'll make that investment just in case  ;D .

So if you follow games journalists that got pre-launch units on Twitter, you may have heard that the 'Day One' update still hasn't gone live....concerning to say the least.  I've been planning on buying NSMBU through the eShop so if the shop isn't there when I bring my Wii U home I will be very sad indeed.

I find it funny that a "day one update" not being available before "day one" is concerning lol.  I do get what you mean though, one would assume it'll be available for all the press to use but if its called a "day one update", I'd expect it'll be going up on day one.  Now if tomorrow the update is not coming through, then I'll be worried.  Regardless though, as long as the thing plays games, all the other stuff I can wait for.

True true, I'm hoping it'll available right at midnight (or 12:30 or whenever I get home) but if it isn't I guess it'll give me a chance to give Nintendoland a fair shake because once I have Mario U that game will probably be swept aside for a while.

Disco Stu I am disappoint you do not make your sentences rhyme.

I live in the UK so I won't be getting it for another 12 days. You guys gotta let me know how ZombiU turns out. I've preordered it online in the hopes they will dispatch it early and I'll receive it before release date.

Disco Stu, there is nothing to be concerned with. Same thing happened with the Wii, the day one update wasn't available until day one of the system actually being available.

I'm getting Zombi U and will definitely be giving my impressions once I've played enough of it.

Same here, ZombiU is a day one for me regardless of seeing mix bagged reviews.  Everything I've seen and read looks good to me.  I'll provide impressions also.  I think tomorrow we should create individual threads for each game so impressions will become easy to find.

Disco Stu, looks like there is no more worrying for you.  The WiiU update seems to be live as of now.

Just make sure you check for an already existing thread before you go posting it. Multiple threads on the same game are not only confusing but annoying.

Am now at home, with my Wii U slowly downloading the day one software update.  Excited to have one, but it's a bit disappointing to have to sit here and update the software the second I got home.

Did it force you to update?

When I set mine up at the store, it went straight to the update screen after setting up internet - however, when it timed out, it let me into the system.

I sort of interpreted it as saying I should update it, I'm uncertain as to whether or not it's required.

It's not that I can't wait it out, just a little disheartened that I'll probably be sitting here til 2:00 AM EST before it's completed if I'm lucky.

Of course, that's not to say I won't go ahead and deprive myself of sleep for the sake of playing around with it tonight ;D

Anyone have any interesting stories picking up their system?  My preorder was at the Raleigh Wal-Mart, so my wife and I had a 25 minute drive to the store, where we found 10 people standing in line.  At midnight, the person in layaway rolls out a shopping cart with about 8 Wii U's (4 premium, 4 basic) and asks who has a pre-order.  My wife and I were the only ones, so she had us cut in front of everyone to get ours first while those poor people waiting there for hours had to watch us take one of the Premium systems without more than a 5 min wait.

I felt a little bad for cutting, but I guess that's what they get for not pre-ordering  :-\

any word on whether the wii's usb ethernet adapter works? I'm going to assume it's a yes but hearing about this wii mode stuff, who knows (i'm no technophile).

I'll have it ready in case I have any wi-fi issues, hopefully it works.

Sweetness.  I knew I still had points left on my Wii from the Pepsi/Rock Band Promo.

And I knew I had some codes (17, as it turned out) that I never redeemed (that I thought might have "expired" by now).  They still worked!

Once my Wii U updates, I'll be transferring all that credit over.  Sadly, it'll probably only work in the Wii Shop and not the eShop...

Went to pick mine up at GameStop at 4:30pm. Arrived and they said the lock to the back room was broken! Locksmith was suppose to arrive any minute, so I said cool cool and went to Target to hang with my wife until she's done and then headed back to GS to pick up my system. Only when you want something bad and you're so close to getting it that the most craziest things occur to slow your progress.
