Title: Wii U Launch Lists/Plans/Budgets
Post by: Kairon on October 30, 2012, 01:53:52 AM
Hey all! The Wii U launch is so close... so ridiculously close... I can't take it anymore! I need to talk to people about it, so this is basically a thread on what our intentions are for the Wii U launch. I'm really interested in what games people are buying, and secretly hope to see many 3rd party games on the list!

I've basically been saving up for this day for a whole year. I have a giant spreadsheet in Open Office where I keep my budget and I usually try to project forward a couple months, but for the Wii U I kicked that thing up into like 12-month forecast territory. Whenever I spent or didn't spend money over the past year, I was always calculating about how much I was putting away for the Wii U. And with this this North American Launch Lineup, it's probably a good thing too.

Hardware:

Wii U Deluxe Bundle - Nintendo - $350 - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)

Hardware Subtotal: $350

Retail Games:

Nintendo Land - Nintendo - $0 (Free from SKU) - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)
New Super Mario Bros. U - Nintendo - $0 (Old Navy Black Friday Deal) - (Will do Black Friday at Old Navy)
Zombi U - UbiSoft - $60 - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)
Assassin's Creed III - Ubisoft - $60 - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)
Darksiders 2 - THQ- $60 - (Pre-ordered at local Play 'N Trade)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - Activision - $60 - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)
FIFA 13 - Electronic Arts - $60 - (Pre-ordered at local GameStop)
Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition - WB - $60 - (Pre-ordered at local Play 'N Trade)
Sonic All-Stars Racing: Transformed - SEGA - $40 - (Will buy at Play 'N Trade?)

Retail Subtotal: $400

eShop Games (Assume worst case prices of $30):

Cloudberry Kingdom - Pwnee Studios - $0 (Free from Kickstarter)
Toki Tori 2 - Two Tribes - $30
Trine 2: Director's Cut - Frozenbyte - $30
Nano Assault Neo - Shin'en - $30
Mighty Switch Force HD - WayForward - $30

eShop Subtotal: $120

Accessories:

Screen Protector - $20
(I already have WiiMotes, Nunchuks, Wii Motion Pluses, a 32 GB SD card, and plenty of emergency AA batteries)

Accessories Subtotal: $20

Totals:

Hardware Subtotal: $350
Retail Subtotal: $400
eShop Subtotal: $120
Accessories Subtotal: $20

Complete Subtotal: $890
Estimated Taxes: $89

Estimated Total: $979

Statistics:

Retail Games:
2 First-Party vs. 7 Third-Party (Retail)
3 Exclusives vs. 5 Timely Multiplatform Ports vs. 1 Old Multiplatform Port (Retail)
2 Ubisoft titles vs. 2 Nintendo titles vs. 1 each from the other Publishers (Retail)
9 Retail games vs. 5 eShop download games
9 Big Publisher games vs. 5 Indie games

I've got my Wii U pre-ordered at the local GameStop, but I'm going to see if I can do all my game purchases moving forward from a local Play 'N Trade I recently discovered. I'm also still deliberating about buying a Wii U headset, and if so, which model? Anyone got any advice?

I'm also putting off Nintendo game purchases 'till later. Some of my most anticipated first-party titles come out later, and I'll play it cool with NSMBU. It can wait.

Oh, and I've got a bunch of games I'm not 100% committed to throughout the Launch Window...

Launch Window - Definitely Buy

007 Legends - Activision
Mass Effect 3 - Electronic Arts
Lego City: Undercover - Nintendo
Aliens: Colonial Marines - Sega
Rayman: Legends - Ubisoft

Later - Definitely Buy At Some Time

Pikmin 3 - Nintendo
Wonderful 101 - Nintendo

Thinking - Not Sure If I Will Buy

Scribblenauts Unlimited - WB
Madden NFL 2012 - Electronic Arts
Funky Barn - 505 Games
Chasing Aurora (eShop Download) - Broken Rules
Runner 2:Future Legend of Rhythm Alien - Gaijin Game

.
..
...
Has anyone else obsessed over this as much as I have?

Edit: added New Super Mario Bros. U to the list. I'm gonna try to get it at the Old Navy Black Friday Doorbuster deal.

Edit: added Sonic All-Stars Racing: Transformed. I am a broken, broken, man.

I live in the UK and what I'm getting is a little weird.

Its a bundle pack with Wii U deluxe model, comes with ZombiU and a pro controller.

Weird right? ZombiU is the one game that does not need the pro controller and the deluxe model does not come with Nintendo Land.

I'm just getting it for ZombiU really and I'll figure out what else I want to play after I'm done with it.

Ohh... wow. For some reason I thought the Deluxe Zombi U SKU in the UK included BOTH Nintendo Land and Zombi U... huh... well, the Wii U Pro Controller makes sense for the 2-Player versus mode in Zombi U where one person plays a survivor (Wii U Pro Controller) and the other places Zombies on the map to kill them (Wii U GamePad).

007 Legends
Call of Duty Black Ops II
Epic Mickey 2
Game and Wario

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Rayman Legends
Scribblenauts Unlimited

I've got the deluxe model Wii U as well as ZombiU, Assassin's Creed III, Darksiders 2 and a Pro controller preordered and mostly paid off. I may get another game at launch in addition to that, depending on where things stand financially at that point, and if I do it'll probably be either Call of Duty or Mario. I also plan on getting NBA 2K13 when it comes out, as well as at least Cloudberry Kingdom and Trine 2 on the eShop, and most likely several others.

I'm only getting the Deluxe set and New Super Mario Bros. U at launch. My next game will probably be The Wonderful 101. Unless Best Buy or Target has a sale on Pro Controllers at some point before Smash Bros., I'll probally hold off on those. I'll probably wait until Rayman Legends and Scribblenauts Unlimited drop to $20.

I am dreaming at this point, unless I make a ton of money at my moving sale. But if I had the money I would just be getting the main console, with at least one controller, and that New Super Mario Bros game and that should hold me over for the next five years.

Wii U Deluxe$350
NSMBU$60
Zombi U*$60
Tax (9.75%)$45.83
Total$515.83

*Be Rayman Legends if at launch

I'll definitely pick up Wonderful 101 when its released.  Rayman Legends I'm going to hope for Christmas.

I'll pick up ACIII, Batman, and Darksider II when they drop to Game of the Year price if I don't get them super cheap on Steam first.  I'm still debating whether I want Cloudberry Kingdom on PC or Wii U.  Also Monster Hunter is a given in March.

I've got a Deluxe Edition pre-ordered from Wal-Mart, with intentions to get New Super Mario Bros. U with it at launch (a good co-op game for the wife and I to play on Thanksgiving weekend).

I can't bring myself to buy anything else new until I see some general feedback on the launch games, or I get a chance to rent a few.

I'm a bit more curious to see what digital offerings will be available at launch.  I might splurge a bit there depending on what's available.

So, considering just the system and Mario U, my total will probably be $425-$450 at launch after taxes.  I can't bring myself to spend double that on launch day.  A lot of my time will probably be spent tinkering with the system itself, anyway.

Wii U Deluxe$350
Wii U Pro Controller$50
Zombi U$60
K-Mart Employee Discount-$46
Tax (8.00%)$33.12
Total$447.12

If I put it on Layaway for an 8 week contract, the down payment would be about 45 dollars, and each payment would be about $100. If I do a 12 week contract, each payment would be about $67.

Now, all I need is some sort of Wii Motion Plus. Does anyone still have those Wii Motion Plus add ons lying around? I had two but I lost them and I need at least one for the Wii U.

EDIT: According to Google the tax rate where I plan on buying it is 7.9%, but I'm too lazy to do the calculations again.

Deluxe Wii U with Nintendo Land - $349.96
New Super Mario Bros. U - $59.96
Skylanders: Giants (running under the assumption it'll come with a Wii U exclusive figure - otherwise, I'll wait for it) - $79.96
Employee Discount - $-48.99
Sales tax - $34.29

$475.18

All you people with your Store Discounts.

The more I think about it I may just try and get Mario as a Download title.  If it doesn't work out I'm sure Mario will be plentiful.  Zombi U I'm not so sure it even be available.

I know my Gamestop be disappointed.  I actually like this one.

Based on some of the stuff I'm seeing today, I'm now definitely getting NSMBU day one, and doing so through the eShop. I'll then immediately get a $5 code I can apply to one of the many download games I'm interested in.

Fixed that for ya.  You accumulate points November 18th on but Nintendo isn't starting the program till December.  Which means points probably won't be their till December.

/gets 10% off physical games at Walmart.
/gets 10% off eShop cards at Walmart.

Buy NSMBU, use $6 saved towards $20 eShop card for $18.  Spend "$20" on eShop, get $2 back.  Total savings $6 +$2 +$2 - $10!

50% off all eShop titles!  Whoo!

(Yeah, there are some issues with my math there...)

Am I the only one here getting a basic set? lol

Wii U Basic Set - $299 (Pre-ordered at Best Buy) + $21 Tax = $320

Day 1 Games (Pre-ordered from Gamestop)
-NSMBU - $59.99
-FIFA 13 - $59.99
Tax - $8
Total - $128

Day 1 eShop Games
-Trine 2: $??
-Chasing Aurora (if it makes launch day): $??

Grand total: $448. Just under $500 including the eShop games. And that's just Nov. 18. During the launch window?

Games to get as soon as they get a price cut/discount/special offer:
-ZombiU
-NBA 2k13
-Just Dance 4 (for the inevitable party game nights. Don't laugh, this series is the holy grail of party games.)

Day 1 Launch Window games:
-Pikmin 3
-The Wonderful 101 (maybe digital)

Day 1 Launch Window eShop games:
-Cloudberry Kingdom
-Mighty Switch Force HD
-Chasing Aurora (if it doesn't make launch day)

That should tide me over until the end of spring.

Cloudberry Kingdom - Pwnee Studios - $0 (Free from Kickstarter)
Toki Tori 2 - Two Tribes - $30
Trine 2: Director's Cut - Frozenbyte - $30
Nano Assault Neo - Shin'en - $30
Mighty Switch Force HD - WayForward - $30

eShop Subtotal: $120

Let's see: $0 + $10 + $20 + $15 + $15 = $60 + taxes (maybe you don't pay taxes for online transactions). That's a bit more reasonable.

There are two reasons I want the Deluxe version:

Ohhhh... Only 6 hours later do I see what you mean, lol. That is some creative accounting! And a cool way to parlay your discounts into each other!

Cloudberry Kingdom - Pwnee Studios - $0 (Free from Kickstarter)
Toki Tori 2 - Two Tribes - $30
Trine 2: Director's Cut - Frozenbyte - $30
Nano Assault Neo - Shin'en - $30

Yeah, you're right, but I made a deliberate decision to budget against worst case scenario prizes. Though... Hmmmm... If I really save $60 like you say... I could apply that to buying the most expensive headsets I've ever owned...

Am I the only one here getting a basic set? lol

.

-FIFA 13 - $59.99

How do you feel about getting the basic? Did you want a deluxe or are you really not impressed with the bonuses that SKU gets?

Also, YAY for buying Fifa day 1!

I did it for financial reasons. Dwindling freelance work since summer meant not as much income, but I still really really wanted a Wii U at launch. I wanted ZombiU at launch too, but I've decided I have to wait until a price drop. Nintendo Land looks great but I know I'll barely play it. It's just not that high up in my "wanted games" list. Already have a hard drive ready for the Wii U. The only thing I might regret not getting is the Deluxe Digital Promotion because it's a great incentive. That being said, I still don't want to tie up so many digital purchases to a piece of hardware and I'm still skeptical over how well supported the eShop is going to be in the long run.

I kinda feel bad for reposting it, cause i already bragged about it enough times here, but ah well:
My order:
(http://s018.radikal.ru/i517/1209/33/bcca33361fc6t.jpg) (http://s018.radikal.ru/i517/1209/33/bcca33361fc6.jpg)

As to why Basic Edition:
Premium doesn't do much for me.
32 Gb? When i have a spare 1Tb USB hard drive laying around?
Nintendo Network Premium program? How's that different from club nintendo rewards we already have? At first i thought it's gonna be like discount for DD titles, but no -- you just get points for buying games that you waste on MORE games.
Additonal plastic stuff? I'd pay to get rid of that.
250 Euro package -- here i come.

There miiight be problems with amazon though, in which case i might probably will be forced to switch retailers. But the order will be the same, plus maybe Tekken Tag 2.

Is it really a waste if you want those games? For anyone who downloads a lot of games (or plans to), the Deluxe Digital Program is a great deal.

Speaking of, I forgot to mention Trine. I'll probably be downloading that.

As someone who likes the idea of buying games digitally enough to have re-bought Mario 3D Land and Mario 3D Kart that way, I'm very interested in the reward program, since I'm going to be getting something for doing what I'd have done regardless.

Yeah, right off the bat I'm downloading 5 games from the eShop. Even if I steer clear of buying digital versions of retail games completely, I figure I could easily earn 4 or more free eShop games over the next two years with my regular purchasing habits.

Oh, i'm going to download quite a lot of eShop games. Nano Assault for sure and maaaaybe Trine, for starters.

But see, to justify me overpaying 50 euro for DDP (because it's really the only thing about Deluxe bundle that's i'm interested in) i would need to be sure i will save those 50 Euros within two first years. To save 50 euros i will need to spend 500 euros first.

Am i sure i am going to spend as much within first two years? Not sure.

Or maybe i am just trying to justify my earlier purchase really hard because when i made that order in August i chose it because of colour and there were no info about the differences between models. And because i can't really change it now, with Black Deluxe set being sold out everywhere.

Man, I WISH I could get the Deluxe version in White. I had really intended to get a White Wii U until the Deluxe Bundle chopped that plan into little itty bitty pieces. I even briefly pondered getting a Basic Wii U anyways just to be stubborn but... *sigh*

Understood. I got caught up on the word "waste." You're not wasting the points on more games when you want those games to begin with. You're basically getting something for buying things you wanted anyway.

At the same time, I view the Deluxe Set differently. The package itself includes things I want, namely the black console/GamePad, but also Nintendo Land. The Deluxe Digital Promotion is a bonus to me so I'm not looking at it as a way to make up the extra $50 I'm spending as I would have bought the Deluxe Set either way. Any points I earn just makes a future purchase cheaper.

I shall not be buying anything yet.  None of the launch games make me feel impelled to buy a new system.  I also want to make sure that Nintendo have taken a nice big bite of humble pie.  I am in no mood to be shafted again.

If they start pulling the same tricks as they did with the Wii, it shall be a bargain bin purchase.  If they impress me, I will get one when something I am more interested in comes out for it.

Hey! Is Toy's R Us doing one of those "buy two get one free" sales this fall? I may do that.
Best Buy had a Buy 2 Get 1 free sale 2 weeks ago and Target had it last week. I mentioned it in the "Most Recent Gaming Purchase" thread in the General Gaming forum. If I see another one of those sales in the future, I'll try to post it in a more populated thread. Toys R Us has those deals more frequently. I check Cheap Ass Gamer every so often to try to track down these sales because I rarely stumble upon them by chance.

Pre-Ordered
Deluxe Set at Best Buy ($350)
Pro Controller at Newegg ($38)
ZombiU at Newegg ($48)
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 at Amazon ($50)

Subtotal: $486
Tax: $21 on system only

Total: $507 less $215 in giftcards at Best Buy and $50 in rewards points at Amazon = $238 out of pocket!

I'm holding out hope that maybe some first party Gamecube games may be available on the WiiU eShop, playable on the tablet of course!

Also, several listed Rayman Legends at launch - I believe it's been delayed until March 2013.

I pre-ordered the premium bundle so that alone is 399, i also want to pick up Mario and another third party game, either call of duty or assassins creed, not sure yet, it all depends on the feedback from the reviews. Other than that i would like to get a pro controller if available, so am probably looking at about a budget of 550.

Welcome Chris! And... yes, more FIFA 13 fans!

... I don't know why I'm so excited about that game. Maybe because I think it'll make me play sports games again like I used to do on the NES and SNES before they got all complicated to just, well, play.

... I don't know why I'm so excited about that game. Maybe because I think it'll make me play sports games again like I used to do on the NES and SNES before they got all complicated to just, well, play.
I'm joining you two on the FIFA train also. Can't wait to take Man Utd to the top!

I'd be buying FIFA if it included the ability to manage national teams in addition to club teams in career mode like this year's 360/PS3 version added. Since it doesn't, I'll be waiting until next year on the Wii U and holding onto my 360 copy of this year's game.

When do the games start hitting stores? Next Wednesday?

I would expect so. November 14th (next Wednesday) is the launch date. Though if you've preordered from an online store, you may get it sooner as they normally dispatch these things early to avoid a late delivery.

I recently spent $1300 on my car and just recently paid off another credit card bill that was roughly the same amount (after months of being pretty good with my money and spending less than $1000 combined on both my cards a month) so.. I may just have to rough it out with Zombie U and Nintendo Land awhile.

Guess it's a good thing I still have Wii games I haven't finished huh?

For those that missed out on the Newegg $12 off coupon last month, Toys R Us is having a pretty good sale this week, including Wii U games.

Buy 1 $59.99 game, get $10 or Buy 2 and get $30 off.

It only works from 11/11 to 11/17, so the Nintendo first party releases and ZombiU are excluded, but the following should be available beginning Tuesday, 11/13:

Assassin's Creed III
Super Scribblenauts
Fifa 13
Madden NFL 13
Mass Effect 3

Also, already posted in the deals thread, but ALL Wii U games will be buy 1, get 1 40% beginning 8pm Thanksgiving night and into Friday.

Oddly enough, this week, TRU is running B1G1 40% off on all Wii, DS, 3DS and... Wii U games that are $49.99 or less.  Also only good until the 17th.

Is it planned that a large amount of Wii U titles will be out before the system?

Yeah, I saw that too, except that the $49.99 Wii U games are things like Just Dance 4 and ESPN Sports Connection.  It looks like all the EA games, plus all the Ubisoft (with the exception of ZombiU - of course) are releasing before launch.

I might pay $20 for it, maybe, but no way any more than that. Luckily, I'll be able to find it for considerably less than that in the not-too-distant future, because it's going to massively bomb.

Launch titles of any quality usually sell decently well because there's nothing else to buy. I expect that Tank! Tank! Tank! will become the Wii U game that I always see at GameStop for 99 cents.

With the Old Navy deal I may change my plan and just get NintendoLand at launch and watch for deals.

I'm debating on getting the Ben 10 game as well because well.  No one knows anything about it and I can play it with my Son.  Also its cheaper.  I'm just not sure.

Well, I canceled my Pre-Order games.  Money wasn't there.

I also talked with my GameStop where I pre-ordered.   They aren't doing a Midnight launch, not surprised, but, they are not even opening early like they did with Skylanders Giants.  Which means effectively GameStop has lost a customer.  I had found a GameStop which customer service wise I really liked, Franklin TN by the Best Buy, never had a problem with them so I was willing to start giving GameStop my business again.  This and the fact that I can get games easily cheaper other places, like the Toys R' Us down the road, means that I'm going back to GameStop as a Last Resort option.  This is insulting that a new console isn't getting even early open status when major releases get Midnight launches.

It has to do with how many Wii Us can be supplied to stores (well games are that much easier to put together, and replicate). For example EB Games is having a midnight launch here in Toronto, but only at 3 major stores. BestBuy, and FutureShop aren't doing it at all, and they only open on Sunday at 11AM. It's a good thing Walmart is open at 7AM... that's how I got the Wii.

That actually looked really good. It's what Mario Kart 3DS did but way better.

Though all I want now is another Monkey Ball.

I would pass on Scribblenauts. If you played the DS games, and you were happy with them then by all means not even Nayru will stop you.

Went looking for 3rd party games and found everything I want to get but later. Saw Batman, Assassins Creed, Madden, Scribblenauts, Rabbids and Just Dance. No Tekken, Zombie U, or Call of Duty...

My final list of games turned out to be:

• ZombiU
• Assassin's Creed III
• Darksiders 2
• Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
• Madden NFL 13
• New Super Mario Bros. U

plus our review copy for FIFA 13. I'm also getting a Pro controller.

Yes, I'm crazy.

I'm getting one and the only games I'm planning on getting at launch are Nintendo Land, Mario U and *maybe* Skylanders.  I just figure they're unlikely to go down in price and I better get one now while they're in stock.

Local multiplayer in ZombiU/CoD/Madden/FIFA. At least some of those support classic controllers or other Wii control options, but the Classic Controller is such an inelegant solution, having to be tethered to a Wii remote

Can you even use Classic Controller in ZombieU?

Judging by back of the cover you can't in Assasin's Creed III and it pisses me off because i don't feel like buying yet another wii dual stick controller when i already have one working just fine.

Assassin's Creed doesn't have local multiplayer, does it? So you can just use the GamePad.

I'm pretty sure ZombiU requires the GamePad in single player, but I read somewhere it supports the Classic Controller and Wii remote pointer controls in addition to the Pro controller for the human player in multiplayer.

So I woke up with a sore throat this morning that has gotten progressively worse throughout the day, which made me decide to stay in for the night. Normally I'd take this golden opportunity to catch up on my backlog but something told me to clean..

While cleaning I stumbled upon a bag of those paper rolls for coins, which made me decide to bust out the old piggy back that I knew was pretty much full (could hardly fit pennies in there the other day..)

Hours later and I have $150 in quarters.. and ran out of rolls. I have a small cup left with more quarters to count, probably another $30 easy, and I still have a full cup of dimes, nickels and 2 cups of quarters to count.

Needless to say, I think I'm getting more than just Zombie U now, though I'll likely just wait until TRU's thanksgiving day sale - seeing as my family is out of town so I have no obligations that day.

Truly unexpected haha.

In one of the first episodes George Constanza went to cafe or bank or something with a huge can full of change. It took clerk half an episode to count them.

Ah I see. Don't think I ever caught that one, I didn't get into Seinfeld until much later on, once it was in syndicate I guess. I won't be buying any games with the coins I've counted lol.. Its just nice knowing come monday I can deposit some money into my account and won't feel the pinch of using my credit card for some extra games.

Leaving home soon to go to BB and pick up my wii u, I'm stoked!

Picked up my stuff late today...  Stopped at parents for a bit then home to make dinner.  Have not set things up as of yet and now watching the Sounders play the Galaxy.  Hope to set the system up soon.   I'm freaking tired though.  I'm old. Kids. Wife. Work.   Errrrrr!      Tomorrow?  This week?  Hopefully soonish....       :)
