Title: Viewtiful Joe :thumbsup;
Post by: telaris on May 25, 2003, 04:49:11 PM
I played the first level today on the GCN demo disk and its just awesome. I like the graphics its like a 2-d sidescroller but the graphics look hand drawn. The gameplay is really simple and addicting. You just keep fighting wave after wave of enemies. You can execute these sweet combos and jump really high. You can slow down time and dodge bullets and missiles and you can speed up time and mow down a bunch of bad guys. Damn I want more Joe. Soul Calibur 2 is on there that games also sweet

Yeah this game looks awesome! It could be a million seller if it wasnt called "Viewtiful Joe". Man, my wallets gonna be bleeding by the end of the year. So many games! NINTENDOVERLOAD!

*has a cry over lack of demo disc release in Australia*
I REALLY want to play this. The obscure adverts on Capcom's Japanese site boosted my love for this game. ME WANTEE!

I hope this game isn't as good as you say it is. If so, I'll have to get it, and I don't have enough money for all these games.

I played the Viewtiful Joe demo and enjoyed playing as Viewtiful, and really liked the slo-mo. I didn't really get what the hyper speed was there for though. I didn't really use it at all, but maybe I have to play through it again to get more used to it. It seems to have a lot of potential though.

Can someone explain to me what Viewtiful Joe is? Is it a cell shaded FPS game? All I hear is that its friggin cool.

it is cel-shaded, bu it's more of a hybrid 3rd-person adventure/platformer type game. u can do all kinds of cool stuff like slow down time. deflect bullets, etc. I haven't played the demo, but this is my most-anticipated game for GCN. to borrow the phrase from the ikaruga box "my frothing demand for this game increases" I fear if I should ever play the demo, my head may spontaneously combust due to over-stimulation, I want this game now!!!

It's a side scroller, cel shaded action game. I think it's supposed to look like a comic book.

It's a mix between a comic, and the set of a movie.

Beaty Capcom-action-game-techno type stuff. Remotely similar to some Mega Man tunes (these are side scrollers we're looking at, afterall), but better than the garbage in the PSX Mega Man games.
The music that plays in the demo is the same as the one that plays in the latest trailer. You can find the trailer thru my homepage.

I finally beat the demo level and let me say, any game that lets you fight bare knuckle against an apache helicopter is a winner in my book.

My favourite of the Japanese ads was the one with Joe and the guy in a Blue costume similar to Joe, and they're talking about Silvia. The blue guy mentions something and the scene cuts to Silvia on a chair. All of a sudden, the camera just WHOOSHES right to the spot between her legs!
I was blown away. Wow! That's Japanese ingenuity for ya! Then the scene cuts back to Joe just clonking the blue guy on the head. Hahahaha! Best commercial evah!

for the Aussies: Who likes that ad for The Panel with all those Japanese chicks in a bath amongst a field of flowers singing some weird song? I think the ads for the Wario game on GBA is funny.

This game is great! Honestly, when I saw screenshots a few months ago and read/skimmed the descriptions of the game, I had no interest in it at all. Though I was glad to hear that capcom was bringing back the 2d beat'em up... but after having played the game, and watched the movie also included on the disc, I am SOLD!
Not really too sure what the story is--not that the story matters much in a beat'em up. But it looks like Joe has "fallen into the world of the movies" or some bullshit.. anyway, "Captain Blue" (Superhero with a big gut and a big outie belly button) gives you your abilities in the first stage of the demo. In the included movie on the disc, some big green dinosaur/lizard/gater guy says he's the one who gave captain blue the scar on his face (or defeated him or something...)
Anyway, Joe seems to have 6 special abilities. A skull icon appears either high or low when an enemy is about to attack, and you can duck or jump accordingly to dodge the attack. This will cause the enemy to spin (cuz he missed the big swinging punch/kick) and leave him dizzy and open to attacks. If the demo is to be believed, ability 1 is just ducking, and ability 2 is jumping. 3 is "SLOW"; 4 is "hyper". 1 and 2 can be done at anytime. After you meet and "defeat" Captain Blue in the first stage, Blue tells you that "you hero-ness has awakened", then gives Joe some bracelet/gauntlets to wear. When Joe says "Henshin!" (or "Henshin-a-go-go, baby!), Joe becomes Viewtiful Joe. Now there will be a meter/bar (drawn as a film strip) that will be drained whenere you use "Slow" or "hyper". 1 and 2 don't use up the meter. When you use slow, the enemy moves really slow, and joe's punches and kicks become more powerful (sends enemies flying into other enemies and objects). Hyper throws this cool horizontal blur effect on the screen and Joe can basically be in multiple places at once (read: beating on multiple enemies at once). Also, the slow and hyper abilities are used for puzzle-solving... You need to use "Slow" to slow the propellers of a flying platform to make it fall/descend; using hyper makes the blades spin faster thus making the platform rise. Very cool.
The movie shows Joe using some of Captain Blue's moves; this is probably what make up some of the other abilities.. The movie also showed "ZOOM", but the screen already zooms when you use slow so I wonder if that's a seperate ability or just an older movie..
Oh, lastly, you can collect "Viewtifuls" (coins with V's on them) to boost your meter/bar.. seems to be over 100 Viewtifuls in the demo.. think it's 50 viewtifuls for each new chunk of meter; I got two upgrades so I'm guessing there's least 100..
Btw, what does everyone think of that trailing scarf? Reminds me of Shinobi on PS2..

Thanks Professional 666, I was hoping Capcom would go with an upbeat Mega Man type soundtrack =D
... And that ad for Panel? Best. Ad. EVAH! *Wishes more adverts on TV involved hot asian chicks in green and pink bathtubs singing songs* Hell, it could work for anything!
