Title: New Super Mario Bros. 2 Closing in on One Million Units Sold in Japan

The new Mario sidescroller is already over 900,00 after one month!

New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS is already well on its way to cross the one million mark in Japan, with 918,262 units sold as of August 19.

From the week of August 13 to August 19, during the Obon holiday in Japan, New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold nearly 152,000 copies. Other titles on Nintendo platforms also fared very well with titles such as Dragon Quest X, Pokémon Black and White version 2, Just Dance Wii 2 (built off of the Western Just Dance Wii 3) and Kirby’s Dream Collection also seeing strong sales numbers.

With the release of New Super Mario Bros. 2 in the West, the title is more than likely well over the one million mark worldwide. There was no information as to whether or not this included digital sales.

Obviously Nintendo needs to give up on the 3DS and instead focus on developing for iOS.

I think this is a slower sales pace than NSMB DS, but I do think the 3DS version came out much earlier in its hardware's life and thus has a smaller install base to drive initial sales numbers. I bet Nintendo is hoping this game goes "evergreen" and just continues to sell a constant stream of units, either digitally or physically, for the next 3+ years and as the 3DS install base grows.

NSMB came out 539 days after the DS release, NSMB2 came out 518 days after the 3DS, so the DS one only had 21 extra days of hardware sales. The DS game sold 900K copies in just 4 days, so the 3DS one is much slower so far. I am sure it will catch up though.

While I have no doubt the 3DS game will sell gangbusters, there's something very important to remember regarding the original NSMB - it was the first original 2D Mario title in about three billion years.  That thing had so much hype around it, there's no surprise it sold as well as it did as quickly as it did.

I think once word gets out about NSMB2, which has a better core game than NSMB, it will continue to sell out the wazoo.

Yeah, there was no talk of "Mario fatigue" then; even the 3D games were a lot more infrequent than now. In the 15 year span following Super Mario World there were three Mario games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and New Super Mario Bros. Conversely, this is the fifth Mario game in the last five years, with a sixth only a couple months away. It's only natural that a new release is less of a big deal than it was in 2006.

Thanks for the correction. It's funny how it doesn't feel that way because by this time in its life cycle the DS had already had one more Holiday sales season than the 3DS (2005 AND 2005, versus just 2011 for the 3DS) and spanned one more calendar year than the 3DS (2004, 2005 AND 2006, versus just 2011 and 2012 for the 3DS).
