Title: Moving to the U.K.
Post by: Sarail on August 07, 2012, 10:18:56 AM
So, yep. Forum thread title says it all. I'm wanting to move to the United Kingdom sometime in the near future, and I have few resources to help me get started.
Would any U.K. forum users here help me out with this? Just a general plan of events that I would need to go through in order to make the transition from the U.S. to there a bit smoother would help quite a bit. Thanks a ton, guys. I realize this is kind of a fully-loaded question, but yeah. Thanks.

What do you need to know? Where you moving to?
Prepare for terrible weather, all year round!

Where to I'm not really sure just yet...though, I'd really like to move near or in the London area. I adore huge cities, so I'm instantly attracted to London. But I suppose this would be based on where I could land a job at. Also, I would need to get a work permit - which I've heard can be a bit frustrating for a foreigner to land.
Hah, if you mean terrible weather as in constant rain, then bring it on. :P I love it!

My advice is not to move to the U.K. Stay in the land of the free, home of the brave!
Sweden?
Mars?

I can't help you with UK specific stuff, but have you looked into stuff you need to know regarding visas? Are you getting a work visa? Do you have a job lined up?
edit: I don't know how to read and missed your followup post. Can you get a 90 day tourist visa or something while you look for a job? Are you staying with someone?

I think your biggest issue is how you are going to avoid getting double taxed when you do leave the US. The US is one of the few countries that impose their income tax worldwide, so that means you can get taxed but the local government and the federal government back in the US.
That is assuming that you get out of the country, Alive.

That's only if you strike it rich. If you live and earn money abroad for 330 days of the year, the first $90,000 or so is exempt from federal income tax.
