Title: Olympics!
Post by: ShyGuy on July 27, 2012, 09:40:35 PM
No, I'm not watching, why do you ask?

But I did like this bit in the opening ceremony from Mr. Bean

Here's the full scene with Mr. Bean.

Loved that ending.

Loved seeing Mr. Bean.  Would have liked to see some John Cleese (other than a 1 second clip of him from Faulty Towers).  As someone who usually doesn't care for these opening ceremonies, it was surprisingly entertaining.

The Arctic Monkeys' cover of Come Together was good, but I don't really see the point of having them do such a straightforward version of it.

And Twitter shows why some people should keep their thoughts to themselves and not pot online sometimes. For the second time in less than a week, an Olympic athlete has been sent home for posting a racist tweet. The first was when a Greek triple-jumper mocked African immigrants (basically saying that the African mosquitoes would have plenty to feed on), now it's a Swiss soccer player after his team lost to South Korea 2-1 (he said they should burn and that they are a bunch of mongoloids).

Who cares if the athletes are racist or not? They are all out there trying to prove that they are better than people from other countries...seems like being racist is almost a requirement. Who cares about the Olympics anyway? Should anyone really be "proud" that some dude who lives in the same country can swim fast or jump far? It's all bull **** if you ask me. OUR COUNTRY IS SO GREAT BECAUSE OUR GUY RAN FASTER THAN YOUR GUY! YAY!

That's never been what the Olympics are about. They are supposed to be a moment for everyone to come together, regardless of political, social, etc. differences. IIRC, you are not a fan of sports in general though?

I like some sports, you're probably confusing me with Morari since we agree on a lot of stuff. I know what they say the Olympics are supposed to be about about, but it's really not what they are about. If it was, then certain teams from certain countries wouldn't be beaten for losing (or not winning the gold), and we wouldn't make such a big deal out of winning. It's all about making your country look better than the other countries involved.

You are right, it's Morari who doesn't like them. My apologies.

I understand some people take these in the wrong spirit. Many take it it the way it's supposed to be. One example is Iran paying one of their athletes $125,000 after he refused to compete against and Israeli athlete.

The idea of sports is that they're supposed to be fun.  The whole reason people are attending live Olympic events and watching on TV is because it's fun to watch.  It's entertainment.  Tying the athletes with their home country makes it more fun for the audience because sports are more enjoyable if you have someone to cheer for (or cheer against in a friendly rivalry sort of way).  It should just be harmless fun.

Of course for lots of people it isn't.  If you're using sports results to determine that your country is better than another, that's pretty damn stupid.  That isn't what the Olympics are supposed to be about.  Of course some countries punish losing athletes and many fund the athletes' training with taxpayer money.  The whole thing is really taken too seriously for pretty stupid reasons.  During the Cold War you would think the Soviet Union thought they would take over the world by winning Olympic gold medals and the US thought that beating them for those medals was the only way to stop them.  It's like Rocky IV only DEAD SERIOUS.

But despite all that I still enjoy it for what it is supposed to be: entertainment.

Watching these Olympics is reminding me how much better I like the Winter Olympics.

Hockey and Curling > everything in the summer Olympics.

I like the Winter Olympics more because Canada is actually good at them.  If Canada was the Duke Blue Devils, the winter games would be basketball and the summer games would be football.

I like to think that the whole "it should just be harmless fun" philosopy should apply to console wars as well, &P.

But seriously, I dig these summer olympics, watching highlights is pretty eye-opening because nbc is trying to cover all these events that I usually don't know exist or pay attention to (Air Pistol? Cool! Dressage? I have no idea what's going on! Weightlifting? OMG!!!). I remember being totally blown away in 2000 when the Japanese Women's Marathon gold medalist when right before she started pulling away she dramatically ripped the sunglasses off her face and tossed them aside. That was so...so... EPIC!

Of course, I think the Winter Olympics are definitely more exciting for me personally. I'm much more familiar with the sports, and my first Olympic memories growing up were of watching Lillehammer coverage.

Well the Winter Olympics are more dangerous, so there's always the chance of seeing someone get severely injured or killed on live TV.

In all honesty I don't really care about the Olympics either way, I was just trying to get a rise out of people. I do hate that they take over NBC for 2 weeks though.

It's just the summer though, so nothing is really lost. The Winter Olympics though, cause most of the networks to not air new shows.

This is the part where I point out that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerns_and_controversies_over_the_2010_Winter_Olympics#Death_of_Georgian_athlete_Nodar_Kumaritashvili) such a thing actually happened at the last Olympics, and it wasn't a "ratings boon".

Didn't help ratings, but internet traffic for the video was very high.

So last night I'm watching the highlights with my brother and it's some running race or something.  Anyway they focus on the winner and he's doing that "hold my shirt out to show it off" routine that really obnoxious athletes do and it gets me thinking.  I say to my brother "You know what I would do if I won a gold medal?  I would tear that shirt off like Hulk Hogan!" and he's all "Yeah!  That would so cool!"

And then the very next event they cut to is the discuss throw and this huge German guy wins it and what does he do?  HE TEARS HIS SHIRT OFF LIKE HULK HOGAN!!  **** YEAH!!

Yes, I have heard this.  Though you figure that could affect one's performance in the games.  Maybe they wait until after their event but that sucks if your event is on the last day of the games.

Here in Canada there is like a rule that the MORE hyped you are by media prior to the games, the shittier you do.  I think it would be hilarious if after such a typical underwhelming performance and the embarassing "wow you really sucked" interview that follows that the athlete just admits outright "well I've been staying up late the last couple of nights having wild sex orgies and was thus completely unprepared for my event.  So, yeah, all my sponsors and the taxpayers just paid for me to have the best sex vacation ever.  Suck it, bitches!"

Unless you make a ton of money professionally, you would have to be stupid to risk not contending (unless it's a sport where you won't stand a chance anyways, like Nigeria and Sweden in basketball). Most countries pay athletes for medal (US pays $25,000 for a gold, Russia gives $135,000 for a gold, Italy has the record at giving $182,000 for a gold medal).

I'm sure the athletes have a heck of a time at the Olympic village. It's like some giant International Athletics camp for them, I'm sure it's a HUGE highlight. But that said, I doubt someone trains as much as these people do just to fly all the way to another country and party instead of, well, you know, doing what they've dedicated the last 8, 12, 16 years of their life to.

It's largely a group of young (college-aged) and attractive people who have been training for the Olympics for four years in relative solitude who need to exercise regularly.

Frankly, I'd be shocked if there WASN'T a lot of sexy time going on.

The Paralympics was fantastic, but shame on NBC for the shitty coverage.

It was on for 11 days. NBC showed only 4 one-hour specials.
