Title: Games That Make You Feel Like Batman or Indiana Jones
Post by: NWR_Neal on June 29, 2012, 02:01:33 PM
So, for something that will make itself known in like a week or two, I'm trying to compile a list of games (across every system) that are similar to Batman and Indiana Jones (while not literally being Batman/Indy games)

Some examples:
Uncharted for Indiana Jones (duh), Spelunky for Indiana Jones
Assassin's Creed II for Batman

Any other ideas?

Minecraft, because of the spelunking and discovery and the badassery of zombie killing

eternal darkness in some parts where you play the ankor watt inspired levels.

I actually felt a lot like Indiana Jones playing Metroid Prime for the first time.  All those scans of ancient Chozo ruins.  Discovery is a big part of Metroid and I felt kind of like a space archaelogist.  I even thought that a game that's JUST that, no real enemies or conflict, just discovering an alien world, would be cool.  Of course I imagine the market for such a game is like ZERO.

I second Eternal Darkness.  Lots of exploring ancient temples and such.

Navigating temples and solving puzzles in Zelda always sort of felt like an elaborate set-piece from one of the Indy movies for me.

I actually read that after I posted but I didn't feel like editing the post after I did the work and research of typing that all out there.

I guess a few suggestions that would be more what he is looking for:

Tomb Raider <---- obviously a female Indiana Jones if there ever was one.

Pitfall, Super Pitfall, and every other Pitfall game <------ all obviously similar to Indiana Jones in many respects.

Castlevania <---- because the hero uses a whip which makes him like Indiana Jones, and maybe also a little bit like Batman as well.

Prince of Persia <---- the developer of this game even said (according to Wikipedia) that some of the inspiration came from the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

As ThePerm said Minecraft always gave me a very much Indiana Jones/explorer feeling.  Nothing like venturing into a cave in survival mode looking for a rare ore.    Not having a clue what its around the next corner or such.

Terraria also gave me this kinda feeling.  Especially with the grappling mechanic.  Always made me feel a bit like Indy when dangling above a pit or jumping to cling on the other side.

Probably doesn't give most people the same feeling, but I always got the Indiana Jones feeling from Elder Scrolls games.   Finding caves and exploring them for rare trinkets.   Watching out for traps or such along the way.  While such a small part of the games, they did give me a few moments where I felt that way. Really more of the two recent additions to the series than the older ones.

I guess I'm the only guy here who played Splinter Cell: Conviction, a game that I think makes you feel a lot like Batman: you are a deadly (and gravely-voiced) shadow that strikes from the darkness to pick your foes off one-by-one in especially brutal ways with an assortment of elaborate toys.  And if a fight breaks out in Conviction, Fisher can actually take it to his enemies rather than have a whiny CO in his ear calling the mission off.
