Title: Order Up eShop Download More Than 300 Megabytes
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on June 18, 2012, 06:08:30 PM

The era of retail games on the eShop begins... kind of.

Order Up, released in Europe as a retail release last December on 3DS and in 2009 on Wii, will take up more than 310 megabytes worth of space on the Nintendo 3DS SD card. The game, which releases this upcoming Thursday, June 21, weighs in at a whopping 2,485 blocks equalling just over 310 megabytes worth of storage.

For a quick comparison, here are some other eShop heavy-hitters and their file sizes:

Mighty Switch Force: 1,800 Blocks (225 MB)
Let's Golf 3D: 1,520 Blocks (190 MB)
The Amazing Spider-Man Demo: 1,001 Blocks (125 MB)

The game took this writer about twenty minutes to download from the eShop.

I wasn't able to download the Spiderman demo over the weekend as ran out space.  So I ordered a 16GB SD card from Newegg.com for $10.

Just finished downloading it... Took about 15 minutes... Not too bad. Hopefully the download speeds quicken when bigger games come out.

I don't think the speed will increase when real games come.  Nintendo is likely using the best server they can buy to support the eShop.  And it's likely that the downloads are leaching all the avalable bandwidth.  Much like a Torrent file.  You might need a faster connection if you plan to download effectively.

I'm fairly certain Nintendo bottlenecks their own downloads.

I own a Vita and am enjoying my time with it, but that snark is more than called for. I got a 32 GB Vita card for $20 off on Amazon and still paid four times what it would cost to upgrade my 3DS/Wii/Wii U SD card to the same capacity.
