Title: GTA cubed
Post by: KnowsNothing on May 20, 2003, 02:24:24 PM
forgive me if i KnowNothing, but i thought i heard GTA and Vice city were coming to the cube in like a couple of years, when they're old and not as good, and GTA 4 or 5 is out. is this true? i've never played any GTA game so i'd buy it either way.

You've never played a GTA game? Wow, try to play GTA III at least once in your life ^^
Anyway, Sony have a contract with Rockstar North, the GTA series is exclusive to PlayStation 2 until the end of 2004. After that, we may see a GTA game on GameCube. But I doubt it.
I have a strong feeling Sony will either just go all out and purchase the developement studio, or Rockstar North will just ignore the Cube in favour of the PS2 and Xbox when it comes to GTA. The soundtrack alone would prove quite a bit of trouble with the GC's limited disc space.

huh? Why would the soundtrack be that difficult to put on a GC disc? PSOne games had rather lengthy soundtracks, and they only hold a fraction of what's on a GC disc.
Anyways, it's not likely that Sony will give up its cash cow, but stranger things have happened.

Yeah, but alot of PSOne games soundtracks made use of PCM. It was pretty rare to find a game that actually had redbook encoded music. GTA III and Vice City's radio stations (to my understanding) were all high quality music, which ran for quite some time before looping and streamed from the disc. Taking up a fair bit of space.
*Shrugs shoulders* Correct me if I'm wrong. ^^

Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City will indeed be coming to GameCube and Xbox after the contract is up between Sony and Rockstar in 2004. As shown in this link. And according to Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, these games "will sell, like, a jillion copies." Now that'll be something to see.

Personally, I would not buy either game. GTA annoys me by its very existance.
But the MusyX tools include MP3 support I am pretty sure. I can't imagine the audio taking up THAT much space.

if rockstar can improve the graphics drastically, then i may consider buying it. i just can't stand PS2 graphics.

Anakin, they would probably port the PC version, which has substantially improved graphics.

oh yeah. In that act of blind rage against the PS2, I totally forgot they made a PC version. haha.
well, hopefully, it's not a straight port. more extra features are needed to warrant a purchase. it's like the case with the MGS remake.

Please don't post the same outdated rumors that we've already debunked as fact. The IGN article even specifically debunks itself.

Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City will both easily fit onto one Gamecube disc each. All you need is 1337 compression skeelz (It can be done on GCN) and MP3 music (can also be done on GCN).
Heck, the PC version of Vice City not only has higher resolution textures than th PS2 version, but it is a mere 2 CD's. Even if you do full install (copying music to hard drive also) it comes down to like 1.55 Gb, and since the GCN would not have high res textures (or as high as the PC version), it would be less than that. Plus, the GCN supports texture compression....
Anyway, both games would fit. If the PC version only takes up 2 CD's, and barely 1.5 Gb after installing the game (with texture compression if your vid. card supports it, and the GCN supports texture compression too), then it could fit on a GCN disc if they put some effort into it.
And if they are lazy, they could just do 2 discs - split the city in half.
Of course, it probably won't come to GCN, and if it does, I'm definately not gonna buy it. I'm picking up my PC Vice City next week.

If the next GTA has a gameplay like GTA1 (e.g. dying from one bullet), I might consider it. But that's highly unlikely.

GTA is not that great, certainly not great enough to be bought in 2 years time, with outdated graphics and sequels available that are much better.
