Title: Scammy Takeover Ads...
Post by: UncleBob on June 09, 2012, 01:23:35 PM
I don't know what's up with the new ads, but I was browsing on my phone and opened a thread here on the forums. Next thing I know, I had a new tab open that took over my browser proclaiming I had three viri found and to "Click here" to install the removal software. Super not cool. Had to force close the browser to get out of it.

I had one that wouldn't let on the forums and kept offering me to sign up to an exclusive singles sex site.
It stopped showing up after I finally got past it, but it was very annoying.

I'll direct the tech team to this thread.

When Apple releases a 4G phone with a full keyboard, we'll talk.

I got a similar message to this on my iOS device anyway.

I've run into a similar scam ad that pops up on my Android phone browsing random pages. Suddenly a black box pops up and insists I've won some giveaway in my area, and it forces me to leave the page and go to this scam page. I go back to the previous page, and the thing reappears again. My Norton Antivirus hasn't found anything on the scans I've done after this, but at the very least it's incredibly annoying.

Is this only a mobile problem? I haven't had any ads like that on my laptop.

it's happened more than once on my phone and only on my phone.
Caterkiller had the same site as me pop up on his phone too.

It's never happened to me, but that may be because my phone's web browser bypasses any internet filter or blocks any pop up. :cool;

Could you guys try installing Addons Detector from the Play Store to see if that finds anything? It's possible that it's a coincidence that it comes up when you access NWR and we have to prove that it isn't before anything can be done about it. Sorry for the bother and thanks very much!

Ugh. I'm not a fan of installing random apps to my phone that require full internet access... but, for you, I will. :D
(Plus the fact it seems to be fairly highly rated and such)....
*edit* - What, exactly, am I looking for? The only apps I have installed are the ones I know about... Amazon Video, Battery Life Widget (no permissions granted), Krispy Kreme's Hot Light app, the Facebook app, Splashtop, SpareDeck (no permissions granted), the Hotmail App, both Cut the Ropes, Firefox and, now, the Addons Detector.

If any of those have push notifications, that could be behind it. You can filter by type I think.

According to this app, I have no applications installed with push notifications.

Root your phone and install Adfree Android. Problem solved.
