Title: Tomb Raider May Be Released on Wii U
Post by: NWR_insanolord on June 07, 2012, 09:12:14 AM

Lara Croft's new adventure may be making its way to Nintendo's new console.

The new Tomb Raider shown off at the Microsoft E3 Press Conference earlier this week may be coming to Wii U, if a leaked Game Informer scan is to be believed.

This reboot of the long-running series, developed by Crystal Dynamics, focuses on the origin of Lara Croft, and how she became the character we know her as. The game tests your ability to survive in harsh environments while facing tough opponents.

The game is currently slated to be released in 2013.

Ah, good news, if true.

I'd love to play this female version of Uncharted on the Wii U. ;)

I hope this is true. It's important for Wii U to get ALL of the major 3rd party releases. This was on my radar. If I came out on Wii U, I would get this version over the PS3 version, granted it wasn't riddled with bugs and glitches which would be pretty dumb of Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics when they're trying to relaunch an entire series.

This game would absolutely be on my list if they removed the battered woman simulator aspect.

I mean, seriously, it was getting comical how frequently and brutally Lara was getting hurt by SOMETHING in those trailers/demos.

"Gritty" indeed.... more like uncomfortable slapstick.

One part of the trailer showed Laura fending off a rape attempt. It gave the impression that the player had to press buttons to fend the guy off and get to a gun. She then shoots the guy and is covered in his blood. The old version of Laura Croft would have just shot the guy from the start.

Few current gen XBox/PS3 games entice me, because I'm not a shooter fan (and those exist in spades!), but this is one that I would definitely pick up. Tomb Raider has always been more story-driven adventure than run-and-gun shooter.

i haven't seen this version of Tomb Raider, but i have to ask... "How many times have they rebooted Tomb Raider?"

not that its a bad thing, i actually like the Tomb Raider series. I'm just curious because I think they've rebooted the series like 3 times before. I just want to know the number.

I'd be very surprised if this game wasn't ported to Wii U at some point, considering Square-Enix's multiplatform focus these days.  It'd be a good thing if it was, because this new Tomb Raider looks amazing.  Yeah, Crystal Dynamics' previous Tomb Raider games were...alright, but this is on a whole different level.

Thats the thing.  This is suppose to be before the old version of Croft.  After an encounter like that she probably will.

I'm going to agree with Ninsage on this one.  At first one could me forgiven for mistaking it as a trailer for a Descent the game (the horror flick and not old interplay game).  It was eerily sadistic at first and then just comically redundant by the end.

Oh admit it, NinSage.  You're just put out because Lara didn't spend the demo searching for "the Raider" with her father nearby waiting until she's nearly dead to tell her she finally had "authorization" to dodge bullets and use her crossbow.   :P: :

I'm withholding judgement on the whole "gauntlet of pain" thing Crystal Dynamics is doing with Lara, because so much of that is context and how they present that game world.  Depending on how the game sets it up and deals with it outside the limited window of a demo, that could either be gratuitous torture porn or it could be well-justified as character-building towards a more assertive and experienced Lara Croft.  It's a grim and nasty world, and she gradually becomes a badass.

In any case, it has me intrigued (at the very least, it looks like a blast to play), and I'm optimistic after all the extremely well-done trailers and demos that Crystal Dynamics is going to succeed where Nintendo recently failed with this sort of character arc.  I'll take this Lara over one that pretends to be an archaeologist while simultaneously destroying ancient ruins and shooting anything that comes within 10 feet of her (regardless of whether it's attacking her or not...see most animals she runs into).

@broodwars

Abbie Heppe finds this Tomb Raider sexist.  ;)

~~~
Does anyone know if there has been any, even small, backlash about this in the general gaming community?  In other words, is it even possible the final product might tone down the Lara sadism sim?
Side note: it might not be so bad if Lara wore protective garb of any kind.  It was just unsettling to see her get shot in the head and keep on trucking  :P:
