Title: What's this? Demo Disc only with purchase of GCN?
Post by: grap3fruitman on May 19, 2003, 02:27:33 PM
Several retailers I've called have told me that the GCN Demo Disc cannot be purchased seperately.. Websites have also gotten rid of the Demo Disc from their listings.

Well, you can't purchase the demo disc that Sony bundle in with the PS2, or the disc Microsoft chuck in with the Xbox. Give Nintendo time, I'm sure they'll make demo discs a regular thing via some magazine.

I just got this reply back from Nintendo:
Message(#6851-000127-6904\1276904)
Hi!
We can certainly understand your desire for demo discs. We will be sure to forward your feedback about their availability, as well as your level of interest based on the fact that you already own a Nintendo GameCube system.
Your comments regarding demo discs are very important to Nintendo and we are glad you contacted us to share your thoughts on this issue.

From: "Robert Miller" Posted To: Nintendo <nintendo@noa.nintendo.com> Subject: Gamecube Preview Disc
To whom it may concern; When I first heard of the preview disc coming out on May 19th I was very excited. I would be going to get the opportunity to play some early versions of games to come as well as show them to my friends whom do not have a Gamecube. But now I have heard that it will only be allowed to persons whom are purchasing a new system. This frustrated and confused me. I feel that this is the exact opposite action to do in Nintendo's position. For Nintendo to move farther ahead of Microsoft in the number 2 position, it must get word out with what is coming in every feasible way. One of these ways is with the pre mentioned preview disc. With a larger user-base, there is a larger incentive for third-parties to make games. For instance, many people do not know or believe that Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, which is made by Ubi Soft who is a third party developer, is out on all platforms now because of Microsoft's time exclusivity they had on it for six months. Other potential Gamecube owners looking for the game will go directly for the Xbox or Playstation 2 since there has been marketing directly for those platforms by each respective company. But by getting the preview disc out which have the playable demos of games, it can show that the Gamecube is just as good as the others with comparable, identical, and better games. Many "casual gamers" are more concerned with image than having games that are fun like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. With gaming today, there is only so much that can be said versus actually playing a game to describe it. The Wind Waker is a prime example of this. Mr. Miyamoto consistently talked about waiting until playing the game before making judgments. Most people would agree that he was correct. I do hope that this recent decision will be reevaluated and the decision to have the disc as a separate optional purchase is made. There are no negative side affects to this promotion. The Gamecube's quality games will be better advertised because more people will be able to talk about or show the games to others. There would not be any more loss of revenues to Nintendo because more people would be able to purchase them. I know I am not the only one who feels this way. Please take these considerations carefully, it could greatly help the image of the Gamecube and could bring in many more Nintendo product owners.
Robert Miller
This sucks, none of the stores around here have them much less even heard of them. I have tried EB Games, Circuit City, and Target.

I must be one of the lucky ones because I got my demo disk today, ordered it from EBgames.com about a week ago.
Viewtiful Joe is interesting but the control set up will take me some use to, don't know yet if I will buy it. It plays smoothly and the graphics are astondingly perfect. I got to the gunslinger guy but couldn't get past him
Soul Calibur 2 is great, I already pre-ordered my copy even though the last fighting game I have played was Killer Instinct Gold on the N64. I never played a "3-D" fighting game and without any previous knowledge of how to play this game and without any instruction on how to perform special moves I just went wild and got past several fighters but couldn't get past Voldo (sp?) Looking forward to this one.
Billy Hatcher. The demo was short but fun, I played it twice and will probably get this when it comes out. It's cute but not in a bad way. When he does his egg echo he makes a cock-a-doodle-do sound that made me smile. A lot better than I was expecting.
These were the only demos I played.

I'll probably try to get one soon, too. Perhaps now. I'll try EBgames.com, then. . .
Where on heaven and earth did you find this demo disc. I can't see it anywhere on the site.

It's been removed from EBgames.com and all other websites as far as I can tell.

I ordered mine May, 8. It was listed on the home page for the Gamecube section. I'm kinda glad I went ahead and got it when I did. So far it looks like Nintendo is doing something stupid again. I guess they think no one already owns a Gamecube.

this is a bunch of bullsh*t! i just got mine today at target and they are $10 only. i beat the soul calibur 2 demo. played with my cousin too. billy hatcher is a lot of fun even though i only played a few minutes. i played splinter cell for about 15 minutes. i playe dsonic adventure dx for about 2 minutes. i will play the gba downloads in one week bacause i need to buy the cable.and i forgot the other game but im 100% sure that you can buy it. websites just take the stuff off their site a few days before the item is released so they can make sure that they have enough copies to fill preorders and after a week or so the item is back on the website. pretty good disc.

I looked for the GCN preview disc today at Target and Circuit City and I was not able to find one. I highly doubt that Nintendo would only include the preview disc if the consumer bought a GCN system. I hope I can find one soon becuase I am really looking foward to playing some of those demo's.

Since some stores are selling the disc and some aren't I figure this is all just a big miscommunication between Nintendo and retailers and as a result some stores just aren't sure if the demo discs are available to everyone or not. It's clear that the disc does come with a Gamecube purchase so it's likely that some stores have confused "comes for free with Gamecube purchase" with "only available with a Gamecube purchase". I really REALLY doubt Nintendo is dumb enough to f*ck up something this simple.
Besides the existing Gamecube market is who it makes the most sense to get this disc to since they are the ones that will buy the games featured.

To those of you who bought the demo disk, what kind of packaging does it come in? Does it say anywhere on the packaging something like "not for resale"? Thanks for answering.

Got mine from Target today, $9.99+tax. They were sitting on top of the register inside the little "island" inside the camera area, still in the shrink-wrapped bundle. They weren't too sure if they could sell them yet, but since it rang up with a price, I guess they decided it was okay. But yeah, it does say NOT FOR RESALE right above the UPC.

"it does say NOT FOR RESALE right above the UPC."
Oh so I guess Nintendo really is dumb enough to f*ck up something this simple. *Sigh* Is there no one at Nintendo that might think for a second that maybe people who already own a Cube might want to get this disc? Since I'm in Canada the local stores probably won't get the disc until like Thursday which will give Nintendo plenty of time to alert the store and screw me over. I really hope the EB guys just say "f*ck it" and sell me the disc.

I think you all are missing a key word here. "Not for REsale." You can buy it once, but don't you dare try to make any money off of it. So lend it to your friends, but selling it on eBay is a no-no. BTW, don't be stupid enough to buy it off the inflated eBay prices; you know it retails for only $10.
If things get hairy, tell the clerks to call their Nintendo Rep or District Manager. Hah, but don't upstage them by being more helpful to other customers than they are; it really pisses some of them off. (Yeah, unrelated to Nintendo, but that's what happened to me when picking up my disc. The man shouldn't be working in the electronics department if he has to look at a piece of paper to state obvious facts about digital cameras. Working a specific department demands background. If you don't have it, go back to stocking.)

If the e-mails don't work, I also suggest waiting a couple of weeks and check out the used games stores. I remember that about a week after the Zelda bonus disc was released, I found it for sale used at GameStop...

I called the EB in my area and they are selling them for $10. Problem is they only had 3 left and would only let me reserve it if I was going to get it today. Since that is a 40 minute trip to get there, I passed. I'll call first thing in the morning and if they still have a copy get it after work tomorrow.
Truth be told, these things should be free. The more people that get them the more people likely to buy one of the games on the disc. However, I'm still willing to pay $10 for it. For Nintendo to say only people buying a new GC should get one is ridiculous. I imagine this will be changed quickly and they will be common to find in a couple weeks. Atleast I hope so. I'm really interested in 4 of the 5 games on the disc and that's 4 possible games that this consumer might buy if given the chance to preview them.

Picked mine up at target today.
viewtiful Joe is lots of fun, I was not into the title at all before today but it was fun, did start to get boring though after a bit but I assume that might be because it's just a demo.
Billy and the damn egg lost my interest before I even began but my 5 year old loved it to death. Played it more then any of the others followed closely by soul caliber to my surprise.
Sonic was horrid, the cameras and jerkiness and glitches in were just way to many. I had always heard it was better then the second but find that extremely hard to believe after playing the demo. I played a level or two years ago and do not recall it being so bad. It used to be a must have for me now I might not even bother with a rental (thank you Mr. demo disk for saving me some cash).
Splinter cell was splinter cell , a good inclusion for those who had not played it yet.
wario was a blast and dr. Mr. is dr. mario. A idea having them downloadable like that!
Soul caliber. Very fun but wish I could play more then 2 characters and I wish I had a button to jump with. I hate the fact there is not a jump button. The stick would not work as one because it's in a 3D ring but the L button or R button would work perfect and I just do not understand why it is lacking that, the amount of tricks and moves could be increased by far with that inclusion. Besides that, a very beautiful game and will probably if not defiantly get that one.
Title: What's this? Demo Disc only with purchase of GCN?
Post by: egman on May 22, 2003, 02:49:38 AM
StRaNgE--You can jump. Instead of seperate button or using up on the control pad, jumping is a combination move. You need hold the block button while pressing up if I remember. Also can also do a jump attack similar by pressing an attack button instead.
Anyway I FINAllY got my disc yesterday. I live in Georgia so things to come in later. I hate all those people on the west cost that were playing this thing last friday. Just kidding, but I do miss living in Sacramento. I used to live 20 minutes from Fry's, and it looks like Fry's got the disc earlier than anyone else. Would've been nicer than a ten mile drive to the Mall of Georgia.
I played all the demos except Splinter Cell
I was dissappointed in Sonic--very little has changed except that now there is some stupid slowdown that did not exist on the Dreamcast. Unless you want all of the GameGear Sonics, then those who already have this on Dreamcast can save the money. Otherwise, it's a decent buy, but not mind blowing.
Billy the Hatcher--This is demo is SUPER short. I don't think I will a really good impression of this game until I can rent. However, the little I was able to see shows promise. This seems to be more emphasis on platforming rather than collecting stuff--a good thing. Rolling the egg around for attacks is hell of awkard, but you get used to it. It's not a stunner, but it has a lot of nice liquid effects from what I can see.
My only qualm is the pop up. I hope they have enough time to fix that up. SMS and some of best PS2 platformers have NO pop up--I would expect the programming talents at Sonic Team to at least meet that standard for draw distance.
Soul Calibur--I can't wait for this. The GC controller is slightly awkard, but you can get used to it. It doesn't matter to me much since I'm planning to get a arcade stick for this game and a few others.
The game is a sight to behold. While it might not knock your block off immediately like Tecmo has with DOA, a quick comparison between the Dreamcast orginal and sequel leave no doubt about the boost in visual splendor. More importantly, the game is still light year ahead of DOA in terms of gameplay. It's easy enough to get into, but button mashing only gives you so much mileage in SC 2 or SC for that matter. A good thing if you ask me.
Finally, Viewtiful Joe--I thought this would be a sleeper hit, but if Capcom and Nintendo promotes this correctly, it could be system seller. This game is FUN! Many will dig the Matrix type use of speed when fighting baddies. It's hard to describe the please of going into slow mo and laying down a devasting combo on some punk droid. I hope this will mark the return of beat em ups.

For those of you complaining about Billy Hatcher's brevity...
When you beat the first mission, don't exit out of the demo. Just start again and you'll be presented with Mission 2. I didn' really play through it, so I don't know how many times you can do that, but they sure do tease you with a whole level flyby, and if its anything like the other included demos, I'm guessing they may actually let you play through the whole level.

If Capcom is that confident in Viewtiful Joe then I hope they put a huge marketing push behind it. Right now pretty nothing on the Gamecube just sells itself. Joe is also a really weird and quirky title that could likely be ignored by casual gamers that don't understand what it's about. It's a good enough and original enough game to be a system seller but it needs some good marketing or like Eternal Darkness (which probably could have been a system seller) it may be ignored.

Figured I'd chime in here on the whole demo disc thing. Whoever said there was confusion between Nintendo and the retailers were right. I work at a Gamestop and had been getting calls for over two weeks regarding this demo disc, but unfortunately I had been given little information about. When the Nintendo rep popped in, I asked her about it and she had told me that it wasn't going to be for sale, it wasn't going to be free to take, but it would probably be packaged with or given away with some other Nintendo product (this was earlier in the week).
Two days and 25 phone calls later (in which I had told people they couldn't buy it), I notice that we're getting in a whopping 6 copies of the demo disc and they would a) be for sale $9.99 or b) come with the purchase of a new Gamecube system. So we got them in today, I picked one up, it's good times. All Gamestops should be selling them for $9.99 - if you don't see it, just ask. If you're told they're not for sale, just push them to check their daily store e-mail, because as of this morning, $9.99 was the story.
But beware the limited quantities. Nintendo likes to ship as low a number of in demand products to retailers as they possibly can.

just picked up my demo disk at a gamestop i love it- it was worth the ten bucks
splinter cell: its alright, i like the game, but i still prefer metal gear to it- but it is fun and is a long demo for what it is worth
billy hatcher: a very short demo but it was still fun- more so than the sonic game on the disk- i didnt think too much of the game until i played it but after i did i found out how much fun it was
sonic: blows- the game is too jerkey and not smooth- the dc version plays better than the game on gc does
soul calibur 2: tons of fun- a lot of good fighting and a good sequal to soul calibur- contols take some time to get used to but it is fun none the less
viewtiful joe: i have wanted this game since the capcom 5 have been announced and all i have to say is that the demo for this game is worth the ten bucks- the game controls great with the stick or the d-pad and the buttons are used very well the effects in the game are great- l controls slow as r controls mach speed- and the game plays like a dream i cant wait for this game now to come out- it will be good

I agree with rpg lover. Viewtiful joe was well worth the 10 bucks. I must have put a good 6 hours into this disc already, and I have still barely played splinter cell.
I think all the games are great..... I still like sonic though.

I just scored mine from Target. Of all the games on the disc, I actually liked Billy Hatcher the best. Go figure. Before I tried it, it was a game I probably never would've picked up, but now I'm definately interested in it. Sonic I was a bit disappointed in. The camera sucked as usual, I was expecting that, but the controls were too jerky. I kept running into walls. I played a bit of Soul Caliber 2, but I plan to go back and play it a bit more. Splinter Cell I didn't touch. I've tried it on the Xbox and I found it kinda boring. I also really enjoyed Viewtiful Joe and I may have even named it my most favorite on the disc, if I could've just gotten by that boss who shoots those stupid guns. I'm just bitter, that's all. One of my friends almost wet his pants when he saw the Rebel Strike trailer. Oh, and the downloadable Gameboy games are just freakin' cool.
