Post by: NWR_DrewMG on May 14, 2012, 10:11:47 AM

Donkey Kong Country Returns and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are about to get just a bit more affordable.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30138

New Play Control! Pikmin 2 will release in North America on June 10 for $19.99 as part of the Nintendo Selects line. In addition, three other Wii titles will be getting price reductions. New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis will be joining the Nintendo Selects line and dropping in price to $19.99. In addition, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Donkey Kong Country Returns will be getting reduced to $29.99.

It is unknown when the price drops will take effect.  While you're waiting, check out NWR's review coverage of New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Makes sense to me.

Too bad about the box art.  But, for $20, we could probably afford to print out a new cover at FedEx if we wanted =)

Wonderful price for Pikmin 2. Not to mention I'll likely be able to get DKCR as well, which I have yet to play because of financial issues.

I'm surprised DKCR is dropping so soon. Everyone needs to experience that game.

You mean, "I'm surprised that a Nintendo 1st Party title is dropping so soon."  It's been a year and half since that game came out.   Any other game on any other platform would have done this long ago.   We all know that Nintendo hates dropping the price on their games.   Look at Uncharted 2, which sold just as well or about the same as DKCR (around 5 Million).   That's going for about $20 now, it's one of Sony's Selects or whatever.  I just looked it up on Amazon, DKCR is going for $47 right now.  Which means that at a large discount retailer like Amazon, that game has only dropped $2 from the list price.

Hell, just to pour salt on the wound, I'll also mention that the current price that Gamestop is selling DKCR used is $45.   USED.  For the same amount of money, you can buy NEW copies of Halo ODST and Halo Reach off of Amazon, and have money left over for a burrito at Chipotle.

Used 1st party games from the SNES-GC eras are still selling at $25+ in mom and pop retro game stores.  While the average 3rd party title is in the $4-$10 range.

Nintendo isn't setting those prices.

Supply and demand is why most first party titles maintain high price points.  Plus, a lot of companies are content with making disposable games and selling you the new version 16 months later.   Nintendo, however, relies a lot on that whole "evergreen" strategy and it has worked so far.

Totes getting DKCR, the best DK platformer that doesn't include the words "Jungle Beat" in the title.

+1 for using "totes."

+10 for your decision to play DKCR.  You will NOT be disappointed.  I don't know if this is blasphemy or what, but I think DKCR ground pounds the hell out of DKC.  and I loved DKC.  never really spent enough time with DKC2+3 to comment on those.

Not like New Play Control! Pikmin 2 was gonna be much more anyways, the NPC games were $30. So it's gonna be $10 cheaper (which is still good). Already have Brawl, maybe I will jump at DKCR now.

I loved the original Donkey Kong Country...and thought DKC2 was a move in the right direction.  DKC3 was a move in the worst direction possible.  The stupid map level and Baby character made me have NO desire to play the game...and even when I tried I could never find a level to play because I of that stupid map world map.

I loved Jungle Beat though...it was a very strange and enjoyable game.

It's very likely they're releasing this to "remind" everyone (yeah, like we forgot) before Pikmin 3 comes out.  It will be showcased at E3 this year.

Yeah, DKC3 was a major let down for me back when it came out. It felt rushed, even though I think it released in about the same time frame as DKC2 was released after DKC, so who knows what happened. All I know is that I rented it and was extremely let down. At least Retro seemingly made up for it, even if it took almost 15 years.

Thank goodness!  I've been waiting for any sort of price drop on Donkey Kong Country Returns.  Used copies were staying stuck at $35 (that along with Super Mario Galaxy 2).  Might have to look into a copy soon then.

Maybe i'll look into Pikmin 2 as well, although I haven't played through my copy of Pikmin 1 yet.

The good news is that Pikmin 2 will be $10 cheaper, but the bad news is that the box art is even worse and there is no reverse cover.

I find it strange how Mario Power Tennis is being re-released, I didn't think it sold well the first (second?) time around. I recall seeing dozens of unsold copies in bargain bins everywhere. Perhaps they are trying it again because of Mario Tennis Open?

Looks like SSBB and DCKR will not be receiving the Nintendo Selects label, which is probably why they are dropping to $30 and not $20. They must still be selling well enough.

Glad to see a few more select titles coming, was trying to import Pikmin 2 for awhile now but they didn't have any in stock so this will save me the hassle.

I'm sorry I can't buy the whole supply and demand theory with Brawl. You can't sit here and tell me the demand is still so high that they couldn't knock the price down to $20. I bought it for around $30 only because it was 40% off at a local K-Mart that was going out of business. Even the cashier was shocked that it was still $50.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a game which could really benefit from a New Play Control re-release. Am I right?
