Title: Resident Evil: Revelations Now $39.99
Post by: NWR_pap64 on January 28, 2012, 02:07:39 AM

The premium-priced Resident Evil title for 3DS is now 10 dollars cheaper.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29106

Resident Evil: Revelations will now be priced at $39.99, Capcom announced through its community blog.

Originally, Revelations was priced at $49.99 due to the game being on a more expensive 4GB cartridge, making it one of the few 3DS titles to be sold at that price. While Capcom maintained that the value of the content justified the original price, after "weeks of effort," the company was able to lower the game's price.

I do wonder what that effort could be. Maybe some sort of deal with the production of the carts? The obvious answer would be that Capcom felt they could no longer get away with the higher price.

I think it was the default price in Europe from the start (that's 45€). Guess that higher US price was based on the US dollar exchange rate.

Gigabytes

That is impressive, will be funny when solid state media overtakes disk based media in gaming.

Let me go over here and put on my conspiracy hat...

::walks over to the hat rack, takes the tin foil hat, puts it on::

If I'm correct, there's only one company that makes the memory cards for the 3DS - Nintendo.
Any attempts to get the cards cheaper are going to go through them.

Shot in the dark here - Nintendo cut a deal with Capcom to get the price down in exchange for - something.  Maybe they think this will be a huge title to get "core" gamers to seriously consider the 3DS?  Maybe something with Capcom and the Wii U?

Maybe Nintendo was worried about price complaints?

I'm curious as to what these "weeks of effort" involved...

I had no idea it was going for $50, good that it is not.

I think Nintendo Realized this was a system draw but, weren't going to just roll over because of the presidence that set.  I would not be surprised if there in an exclusivity deal now on the game.  Maybe a Capcom eShop game agreed to.

I will not be surprised if Nintendo lowers the 4GB cart price to stay competative to whatever Sony is charging for the Vita ones.

Or Nintendo x Capcom.

Great that it's dropped in price. I'll be getting it now. The extra $10 was a problem for me to the point I was going to wait. The latest demo sold me on the game but still wasn't going to bite. The games already cose more then PSP/DS games. Capcom wanted to get even more.

Part of me hopes the reason for the change in price was that the game wasn't doing well when it came to pre-orders and sales where it was already released. Being hurt or worried where it really counts is possibly the only thing that got Capcom to change their mind.

Handheld games have reached a certain level of sophistication that I'm actually surprised that the major titles aren't all $50. I'll gladly take the $10 savings but I would have paid $50 for Resident Evil Revelations and Super Mario 3D Land.

Unless Capcom managed to compress the files so they could use a smaller card -- doubtful since this effort would only apply to the American release -- I'm sure their "weeks of effort" were simply a negotiation with Nintendo to reduce the manufacturing cost based on production size, marketing dollars, future cooperation, etc. Capcom probably assured they could meet the economy of scale that has so far only applied to Nintendo's first-party titles, so they argued they should get a deal on the card production price that is similar to what Nintendo pays for its own games. Given the quality and appeal of the game, Nintendo probably decided that taking a small hit on their own margins would be worth it in the long run.

If I'm correct, there's only one company that makes the memory cards for the 3DS - Nintendo.
Any attempts to get the cards cheaper are going to go through them.

They may assemble them, but they don't exactly make everything from scratch. The memory modules (the bulk of the price) are purchased from some other manufacturer.

I'd be very, very surprised if:

A) Nintendo allowed a third party to negotiate prices with their suppliers
B) Nintendo would switch suppliers at the request of a third party developer.
C) Any negotiations with a particular parts manufacturer were done in such a way that they effected the final price of the product by 20%... after the game was already published and has started distribution.

The final level will now be DLC because it couldn't fit on the smaller cart.

Here's to hoping these sensibilities carry over to Wii U pricing

Neat, I grabbed the game for 40€ instead of 45.

Nintendo might have cut a deal with Capcom to insure that Resident Evil 6 is a Wii U launch title. If RE Revelations is successful then I could easily see this happening.

That is such a smart idea.  Starting to change prices based on perceived quality is only a smart idea if it works, consistently, in the opposite direction.

Does anyone know if there is a pre-order bonus for this game at any retailers??

They must have gotten a lot of backlash on the higher price. People are already getting used to the higher standard price for 3DS games, so trying to raise the price even higher at this point was a bad idea.

Does anyone know if there is a pre-order bonus for this game at any retailers??
GameStop was offering a hard case, but it looks like they may all be filled by now.

The European box uses the styled logo on the side so there's no misspelling there.
